Burchill abandoned her son when he was five and remained out of his life until he was fifteen. So he was only a part of her life in any way for 19 of his 29 years.

“Finally, I peeled his drowning fingers off of me and saved myself, and so when he died, I hadn’t seen him for a year, having become so despairing over his self-destructiveness.”

It's pretty impressive he managed to survive 29 years with that for a mother. I'd have checked out as soon as I learned how to use a razor.

The experience led to his biological father writing a bestselling semi-fictionalized account of raising Jack, Man and boy. It's on my list.

Let's be fair to Burchill: she clearly has a mental disability. There are extreme heroin junkies who won't abandon their kids. Most women literally can't abandon their kids, any more than you can saw your own leg off. That's why the state has guys and their job is to forcibly take kids away from unfit mothers, because the unfit mother will never realize her own lack of fitness.

Julie Burchill accepted her own lack of fitness when she abandoned her child. That's not entirely negative. The question is: would Jack still be alive today if Burchill had kept out of his life? Was his downward spiral caused by his terrible decision to be in the presence of this mother who's not able to mother?

I'll bet a lot of money that when Burchill dies, her brain will be revealed to be literally shaped very differently to most female brains.
