I think this is a problem with the way our culture thinks in terms of good vs evil. We're brought up on fairy tails where there is a villain and a hero so when we see someone as a villain we expect their adversary to be the hero. We don't seem well equipped for times when both parties did wrong and could have handled things better.
Subs like AITA are good examples of this in action.

I read as many comments as I could stomach. I noticed one thing all the people accusing the 16yo of slut shaming failed to address. According to OP they assumed that the 16yo found the pic on the mother's Facebook page. Let's assume that OP is correct and that is indeed where the pic came from. If that is so then how exactly can it be slut shaming when the mother herself put the pic on Facebook to begin with? If it's so embarrassing and she didn't want anyone to see it she shouldn't have put it on Facebook in the first place. The 16yo brought it to more prominence when he put into words probably what most people thought upon viewing the pic on her Facebook.
Everyone involved in this is an asshole imo (okay maybe not the younger son) but most especially the parents. If you are going to allow your children to use social media then ffs monitor their social media. Have them add you as a friend. Set ground rules that they can't delete you, block you, or hide anything from you on there in any other way and have their log in info. Failure to comply means you lose your social media privileges for a period of time. If these parents were doing what they should have been doing then this situation never gets this far. The mother gets a notification that "Chelsea" posted something on her Facebook. The mother see the poem and whatever obviously not very nice comment Chelsea made about it. The mother immediately contacts Chelsea and tell her to delete the post and apologize or lose her Facebook privileges. That this didn't happen says one of two things either she doesn't monitor her daughter's social media which is insane given how many weirdos there are online. Or she does and is a shitty parent who didn't see anything wrong with what her daughter did. Now OP on the other hand, it doesn't appear they were aware of anything until the mother contacted them about getting the 16yo to delete his post.
Bottom line, monitor what your kids do online. They may not like it but it helps to keep them safe and prevents situations like this from occurring in the first place.

Over the last decade or two, the OG feminists have largely disassociated themselves from the "new wave" feminists, because they understand the difference between equality and preferential treatment. eh, the point of slutwalks was to protest against victim-blaming and slut-shaming in cases of rape and sexual assault. when women were literally told they were to blame for whatever happened to them because of their choice of clothing and some even wore the outfits they were raped or assaulted in. it was/is about consent and the fact that sluts don't "have it coming" just because they choose to wear something revealing because they're still humans who's human rights were massively violated.
it sucks major ass to be blamed for someone else's actions and to make fun of it is kinda tonedeaf when some of them weren't even women, but girls who were told to wear something less revealing than jeans and a t-shirt and it wouldn't have happened.

I think I didn't express myself good enough and I apologize for that (my mother tongue is portuguese and we have a few ways of expressing shame). When I mean feeling ashamed, is that internal feeling of being regretful of something you did and only the thought of the thing is embarrassing for you alone and so you don't repeat or avoid repeating the act at all costs. It may involve or not involve other people knowing the act(s). Now when I say taking advantage it means hiding something based on the premise that if other people know you will suffer consequences and may or may not feel the internal feeling (as the feeling is a consequence of other people knowing). A psychopath may hide his crimes to not go to jail and keep committing crimes, not because he is ashamed of his attitudes. As in the case of women, it implies only taking advantage as they internally don't regret their acts.

Hey, I don’t know if you’ll end up reading this, but there’s actually a good comment I have saved regarding the lack of a proper word in English you might like:
By degenerate, I mean we lose words that used to have distinct meaning. People use “jealous” when they mean “envious” and now we have no separate words that mean to covet something we don’t have versus to fear losing something we do have. “Issue” used to be a neutral word then it began to be used as a euphemism for “problem” but now “issue” is negative unless I speak an entire clarification sentence afterwards. Elementary school teachers practicing New Speak for 20 years have turned the word “consequences” into “punishment” in a similar manner. So now our language is missing these 2 neutral words and there is no replacement. In businesses across America “methodology” now just means “methods” so I no longer have a word to mean the ways we devise our methods as opposed to the actual methods themselves. People who used to be simple minded bigots are now called “racists” when in the past you had to put in real effort to earn that title, which gives bigots far too much credit. “Simplistic“ is not derogatory any more unless prefixed with “too” so it has replaced and duplicated “simple”. “Nauseous” has replaced “nauseated”, so now what is something that makes others nauseated? We keep losing words, and all the clever dummies in the world keep telling me that dictionaries should be descriptive not prescriptive, but please for fucks sake, look shit up now and again before we’re left with like 7 adjectives in the world.
By degenerate, I mean we lose words that used to have distinct meaning.
People use “jealous” when they mean “envious” and now we have no separate words that mean to covet something we don’t have versus to fear losing something we do have.
“Issue” used to be a neutral word then it began to be used as a euphemism for “problem” but now “issue” is negative unless I speak an entire clarification sentence afterwards. Elementary school teachers practicing New Speak for 20 years have turned the word “consequences” into “punishment” in a similar manner. So now our language is missing these 2 neutral words and there is no replacement.
In businesses across America “methodology” now just means “methods” so I no longer have a word to mean the ways we devise our methods as opposed to the actual methods themselves.
People who used to be simple minded bigots are now called “racists” when in the past you had to put in real effort to earn that title, which gives bigots far too much credit.
“Simplistic“ is not derogatory any more unless prefixed with “too” so it has replaced and duplicated “simple”.
“Nauseous” has replaced “nauseated”, so now what is something that makes others nauseated? Who knows! Fuck it!

See, this is a very VERY and I mean VERY unpopular opinion of mine, but it coincides with this comment I think. (I know it doesn’t really have to do with the topic at hand but it seems like a good enough spot to voice my opinion.) If black people can call each other the n word and it be a cool nickname sort of thing, but if ANY other race calls them that, it’s suddenly insulting, why do they say it in the first place? Shouldn’t race not have to do with your ability to speak a word? If the n word is THAT insulting, how about none of us say it? I’m not saying it ISNT insulting. I know slave owners used to call their slaves that. But since it IS insulting, how about NO ONE should say it?
Edit: I am not saying censor the word or restricting free speech. NOT AT ALL. That would never work and doesn’t nowadays and it’s infringing on our fundamental right to free speech. What I am saying, by “no one saying it” is that the n word should be added to the list of insulting words (bitch, bastard etc.). That no one SHOULD say it.

Ok tinfoil time. The point of the n-word ban is not that it's offensive. It's clearly not an offensive word since it can be used as a term of endearment or even a meaningless filler word.
The point is the control of speech. We have one word that, if uttered by the wrong class of people, justifies violence and ostracization. You can be persona non grata if you're caught saying the wrong word.
It's not like people just accept newspeak. It's a frog boiling. You accept that a particular word can ruin your life, that sets a precedence.

Thing is, we as a society are the ones making it so that “if wrong class” utters it, then they’re being disrespectful and awful racist human beings. It's more fundamental than that. Their use of the word has implications when said by the in-group that, simultaneously, has negative connotations when said from the perspective of the out-group.
To them it means one thing when one of them say it. I'd assume something along the lines of survival, brotherhood, understanding, kinship, and similar.
But it means racism, slavery, torture, persecution and every other emotion that wells up when they think of how they've been treated when others, that is others outside of their in-group, say it.
These are not hypocritical nor are they mutually exclusive concepts. Once we accept that fact then we can start really talking about how to move on.

I thank you for your well thought response. Not many people are able to do that and I respect you for it. Thing is, about the part where you talk about the “out group” when the n word ends up meaning “racism, slavery, torture, persecution”, for one, the people who use it nowadays have NEVER been slaves or experienced torture or persecution. But if a white dude says “my n-word can take you any day on the basketball court” when talking to friends challenging each other, that shouldn’t automatically become a racist word. Black people use it as a term of endearment. That means they don’t believe it’s offensive. Then anyone should be able to use it, OR it should be allocated to the list of insults (whore, bastard, slut etc.) they can’t pretend it’s not insulting among one people group and the pretend it is when an Indian person uses it in a friendly way.

Just something to maybe add in to this. I'm not a sociologist so maybe there are some things I'm woefully unaware of. (Personally I'm very much against the use of the word and other racial slurs) But doesn't this sort of behavior where one group can say one thing but the "out group" cannot say it without social punishment essentially the equivalent of "linguistic" segregation. I get that people are trying to reclaim that word for themselves. And maybe in the short term it will have that effect. But is it possible that this sort of policy sets a precedent for future acts of segregation in other linguistic situations or even other spheres? If we're trying to build an equal society where everyone is based in their credentials, integrity and character rather than their race/gender/ insert immutable characteristic here, it feels like this sort of thing will hold everyone back in the long run rather then help us progress. But idk maybe this is just bc I'm too ignorant of everything else going on.

It may not be segregation in the traditional sense. But it feels like this sort of policy (especially if it expands beyond just the n- word into more expressive areas of speech used much more commonly as of now) could lead to more barriers (or at least tensions) between people based on immutable characteristics. I also feel like speech is a very much underrated factor when it comes to how people are able to think and conceptualize the world around them, and if you regulate speech to the point that one group of people can say certain phrases and words but another cannot, that it could have destabilizing effects (this is entirely hypothetical, but imagine this trend continuing and intensifying to many different areas of speech a century or two from now. Its certainly seems like I'm exaggerating the problem but just humor me for the moment) down the road. A weird an not perfectly adequate example would be speech laws that are being enacted in Canada. From my understanding Ontario was trying to enact legislation to force people to use trans/nonbinary/ other peoples preferred pronouns or be penalized by law. This just seems like... dangerous territory to me. I certainly believe that if you want to be a decent person and you know the person asking you to use that pronoun the decent thing would be to comply. But you shouldn't be forced to do so or risk legal action. But the list of pronouns now is legion and impossible to keep track of, it's very bloated and clumsy in a social setting and doesnt seem tenable in many every day circles outside progressive niches of the internet, but they're pushing this legislation for many many people outside it. It seems very dystopian to me. Even now (at least in my experience on my own social media feeds, twitter and youtube, so take it for however much or little that is worth) people seem like they're being coerced into saying things like there "is no difference between a transwomen and a cis women" and if you say otherwise, even citing a body of scientific evidence which contradicts that then you become a social pariah and risk losing your career and are labeled as evil (even if this isnt actually the case, though I'm sure there are bad faith people who are legitimately nasty about the issue) because of disagreements of speech and semantics. This issue seems to be a large contributor (among many others) to social and cultural tensions in the west over the last decade.
I realize I went off on a large tangent here, and maybe these are two completely separate issues, and I'm conflating them and they have absolutely no similarities between them at all. I've just got a feeling that regulating speech like this. Compelling it for one group and allowing one to use one body of speech while restricting it to another seems like it's a damaging policy for a society in the long term. But at the end of the day I'm just a painfully average person. Im not a seer and I don't actually know a fucking thing about the real world. Then again I don't think anybody else does either.

The mindset behind “Stop slut shaming” isn’t necessarily that they admit that it’s something to be ashamed of or not to be ashamed of it’s that you shouldn’t “judge” someone. For example if someone was constantly shitting their pants and was being made fun of for it or being called a “Pants Shitter”, the issue would not be that its normal or okay to shit yourself but that if someone does shit themself, you shouldn’t judge them for doing what they did/want to do, right or wrong. It’s a dumb mindset because shame is the best motivation and being a slut is definitely not a good thing.

There's so many examples of it, so this definitely isn't the worst instance of it. But it's one which came to mind.
The post included a married couple and a longtime female friend of the husband. I can't remember the names, but let's call the married couple Jane and John, and let's call John's longtime female friend Kate. The post is from the point of view of Jane, and the conflict is very clearly one between Jane and Kate. Spoiler alert: it ends with John being decided as the asshole.
So the background information is that John has been friends with Kate for a long time, even before he met Jane. But at this point, John and Jane have been married for a few years. Kate is a needy friend, frequently asking John to come over and help her with this or that. Sometimes, it's helping her clean her house up or move furniture. Other times it's to give her emotional support when she's feeling down. John does these things, because he's a good friend to his longtime friend, who knew. Jane gets frustrated with John spending time with another woman, showing classic insecurity and jealousy. The conflict for the post is as follows. John works quite a lot, and he and Jane had planned a special day on his day off one week. That day comes, and early in the morning, Kate calls and asks John to come over for this or that reason. John immediately tells her no, and that he has plans with his wife. Kate persists despite him saying no the one time. Before John can reiterate his "no", Jane grabs the phone out of his hands and yells at Kate, telling her to find her own husband. Then Kate hangs up the phone.
Given that story, it seems like a direct conflict between Jane and Kate. There's two basic camps I could see someone falling into. One is that Kate is the asshole for being a needy friend who takes more than she gives, and for not taking no for an answer when John already had plans with his wife. The other is that Jane is the asshole for being insecure about her husband being friends with a woman, and for not trusting him to tell Kate no and keep his promise to his wife, instead grabbing the phone from him.
And yet, the top of the thread was filled with people agreeing that John was the sole asshole in that story. I am still bewildered as to the backward logic needed to arrive at that conclusion. Apparently being a good husband and friend makes you an asshole. I consider that post a very typical example of the anti-man bias on that subreddit. The story is about a conflict between two women, and that subreddit thinks the asshole is the man in the story.

I don’t understand this whole “shaming people is negative” movement.
It’s like the fat acceptance thing, fat people should be “shamed” because they’re causing problems for the health services we all rely upon and in the UK they cost us a lot of money. If it were someone smoking around children they’re called scum, if they feed their children garbage and make them obese it’s not a big deal and you shouldn’t make them feel bad.
If a behaviour is detrimental to society it used to be the correct thing to call it out to inspire change (even if it was due to them no longer wanting to be shamed/ostracised).
Now you have people acting as degenerately as they want to and anybody who questions it is torn apart. “I don’t think it’s right to be making a 10 year old child dress in drag and dance provocatively on stage in front of a room for grown men in what appears to be a strip club” - this comment will get you accused of homophobia and transphobia (?) when really it should be the most commonly held belief.
This website is genuinely toxic and cancerous, never before have I ever frequented anywhere as heavily censored and Orwellian to the point where it’s almost a joke sometimes. I actually have a simulator story. There were these 3 kids (15F, 15M, 14M) who were all siblings and bullied my little brother (13M). They threatened to beat him up and would harass him wherever he went. It got to the point where my brother wouldn’t leave the house since they lived in the same apartment complex as us. I finally convinced my brother to go on a walk with me and we found them. They started laying into my brother when I told them “atleast my mom isn’t a crack head” (their mom was). And similar insults relating to their moms drug problems. Their mom blew a fuse about this but after my mom slammed the door in their moms face for demanding my brother and I apologize they left us alone.

NTA. 100%, totally, and fully, NTA. For the record, I’m typically against violence/confrontations, and always argue for a peaceful approach. But in this case, it’s clear that you’re not the asshole, for a few reasons.
1) The mother posted the picture on public social media. If she didn’t want it shown, she didn’t have to show it, she did.
2) The daughter shows clear signs of poor parenting, and a lack of parental oversight. Her mother failed to raise her properly. Her mother deserves to be called out for such.
3) Your son’s post effectively demonstrates to both mother and daughter that a) the daughter’s post was a shit move and b) the mother has some changes that need to be made
4) If your son had not posted, the mother would likely have not taken any action, even if she did happen to hear about the post.
5) So called “slut shaming” is not, in any way, shape, or form any worse than bullying and breaking hearts. Particularly if the bullying is directed towards a child, publicly received and approved of. Humiliating a child is always worse than an offense against an adult. Particularly, the mother’s friends are much less likely to see your sons post, compared to your son’s friends seeing his crush’s post.
