Can we all agree that elected officials should get punished for missing work like the rest of us Americans?
[–]majaka1234 518 points519 points520 points 6 years ago (79 children) | Copy Link
Should dock their salary at a 1:1 ratio for days missed.
Not sure what you do with those who are actually campaigning - maybe an exemption if you poll at 2% or more?
[–]lilbuffkitty 108 points109 points110 points 6 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link
as if they give a fuck about their salary, its all about those juicy book deals and under the table money they get from being bought out by corporations and countries.

Speaking engagements too.
About 10 years ago, we booked the Honorable William J. Clinton for a speaking engagement at my companies annual event (he subsequently canceled) - the price tag? 300K USD.
Not bad work if you can get it.

Completely unrelated to the Bubba visit we announce no bonuses will be paid this year.
[–]hjuringen 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I cannot answer that question. However someone is able to sell tickets for events he is speaking at for more than that sum, so the math obviously still makes sense for the one booking him for that sum,

1 months salary per missed vote. Doesn't matter if it is 12 votes they miss in a day or over a year, miss 12 votes and no pay for that year.
I guess we could make exemptions with a doctors note.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
This is a little far.
Senators sister dies and they have to fly to Texas for the funeral, missing four days of congress, and 18 votes on bills, all of a sudden they have no income that year, and they can’t get a doctors note.
They should be fined by the day. So if they miss a day of work, they get fined 1/30th of that months salary.
[–]nukedmylastprofile 26 points27 points28 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
None of them work even close to 30 days per month. Fine per day should be 10% of their monthly salary, so you miss 2 weeks (realistically half the monthly work) you don’t get paid for the month. And there’s not 1 who couldn’t afford to continue to live their comfortable life if they missed one months pay
[–]The_Hand_of_doG 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There isn't one who couldn't survive missing a years salary. Their salary as officials is chump change to all the other BS they take. I think it leads me to think punishment should be worse then loosing money. Miss x% of votes in a year and you are not allowed to run again.
Which reminds me we need term limits......
[–]challenge_king 13 points14 points15 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Can we at least base it off of reported income to the IRS, and not just the base salary? "Special Interest Groups" give quite a lot to Congress people.
Doctors notes and extreme circumstances including death in the family. Do you really think any of those precious baby congressmen are going to die if they don't get paid for a year? Even if they do I don't care, do your fucking job. They have one of the most critical jobs in the country. They aren't in session 5 days a week. If they can't do their damn job and show up to votes then the punishment needs to be harsh.
But you don't have to worry, none of them would even let anything that involves anything to do with their job other than pay raises even make it to the floor.

[–]willfordbrimly 16 points17 points18 points 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Let me get this straight, you actually want more rich people in government? Because those are the only people who can afford to finance an entire campaign by themselves.
[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
You say that like it isn’t already 99.99% rich people looking to further their own interests.
[–]majaka1234 18 points19 points20 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
What are you talking about? We've got the generic old rich guy with 4 houses telling everyone how we should give away our money, we've got the other generic old rich guy saying we shouldn't look at his son's kickback from the Ukraine and then we've got the other rich token mixed ethnicity woman to grab that urban vote.
Doesn't get much more representative of the everyday American than that!

[–]willfordbrimly 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
So it's not so much that you want more rich people in politics but that you're totally numb to this obvious problem and you'll spout whatever tripe makes you feel good about the situation.

I’m not the guy who made the original comment you replied to.
[–]erdtirdmans 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
And how do you propose to fix it? All campaign work financed by the government? What about general ads that advocate a position? Will I be allowed to buy air time as a random constituent? What constitutes "advertising"? If I start a blog do I need to give equal time? Obviously if I post on my Facebook it's meaningless, but should the election commission shut down politician's Facebooks? Should they regulate celebrities' Facebooks?
Limiting an extremely specific category of free speech without affecting speech as a whole is easier said than done. That's why we don't do it.
Do you have any suggestions on how to fix it or are we just doomed?
[–]erdtirdmans 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Unfortunately, the answer is journalism, and we're sadly lacking in that this past decade or two. I don't think we're doomed though. If nothing else, Donald Trump has illuminated two very big problems: 1. We need to stop putting our faith in presidents and federal governments because they can and will inevitably be run from time to time by small-handed sexual assault criminals in spray tans, and 2. Our current media is hot garbage.
I feel like 1 has already been widely discussed and hopefully that renewed awareness will carry through after he's out of office. I don't see a lot of movement on 2 but the internet has surprised me more times than I can count and a lot of tools are out there to get the ball rolling on fact checking and transparent reporting.
[–]Luke_Flyswatter 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]TK503 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
that's not how a salary works though. I get a total of 30 days of leave every year, and on some days when work is slow, I'm sent home by my bosses or I send my guys home and the pay is always the same.

[–]carebearstare93 11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
This was corrected in /r/MurderedByWords . She missed just 1% of meetings in 2018. She only has missed in 2019 because she's running for president.
I'm not a Klobuchar fan at all, but she deserves credit where it's due.
[–]empire_strikes_back 17 points18 points19 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
So she’s missing work because she’s out trying to get a different job? One that she will never have.
[–]carebearstare93 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I mean yeah, but by this logic nobody employed could ever seek the office of the president and we'd have to just leave it up to people retired from the game like Biden or force people to resign when they run, in which case no one would do so, because the gamble wouldn't be worth it. It just doesn't work in practice.
Apparently from other comments, senators can absentee vote, but I haven't verified if that's true. I feel like there should probably be a surrogate option so the seat isn't entirely vacant, but that probably has an entire host of problems in and of itself.
[–]3nchilada5 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The majority of these votes were for confirming judges and ambassadors that the Republican majority was going to confirm no matter what. The majority of the rest were procedural. I.e, the overwhelming majority of these votes were meaningless.
If you want to get into it, our elected officials spend most of their time trying to raise money, which is messed up. But this particular statistic isn't evidence of a problem.
[–]imnotatreeyet 13 points14 points15 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
It shouldn’t matter if the vote would come out at 100-0, they were elected and are paid to perform a job. If I decide to not go to meetings because I already believe the outcome, I can miss maybe 4/5 without some issues but 1/3? I’m probably being written up and put on some discipline plan.
[–]stupidusername42 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I get what you're saying, but the way you put it makes it look like it'd be fine to miss 80% of meetings, but not 33%.

She missed votes because she’s too busy out campaigning. It’s normal and has been happening since the 90’s. How is she going to run for president if she isn’t allowed to leave Washington DC? Drumpf and Mo Bamba left DC for MULTIPLE campaigns.
I’m all for flaming the fuck out of elected officials, but hot damn, put it into perspective. There’s also people like Sanders who was in the hospital, should he have his paycheck docked as well because of a medical emergency?
[–]Tysenberg3204 30 points31 points32 points 6 years ago (31 children) | Copy Link
Yes Bernie Sanders should be docked pay for missing work. I don’t get paid when I get sick and have to go to the hospital, so why should he. Especially since he makes more money on book deals than a government salary anyways.
[–]itsdefective 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Paid sick leave is a thing btw
[–]Tysenberg3204 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]itsdefective -4 points-3 points-2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
At any job you get fired for not doing what your supposed to, for members of the house part of their job is to campaign and staying in office to represent their state/district.
[–]Tysenberg3204 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I’m not talking about campaign time because they can cast absentee ballots and still perform their jobs. Also I consider campaigning to be work since it’s required to keep their job.
[–]itsdefective 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
So you just don't like jobs with psl
[–]PassTheReefer 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
I get what you’re saying, but Relax dude. PTO (paid time off- aka “sick time” etc) exists at a lot of places. At least at most career type jobs. Maybe dishwashers at Applebee’s don’t get it but even the guy above me works fast food and gets PTO. Basically, Every month you accrue a certain amount of sick hours, and when you call out sick, your pay remains the same, but your PTO bank gets deducted for the amount that you miss.
[–]Tysenberg3204 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Thanks but I know how PTO works. I should have been more specific that I meant they should be docked pay if they take time off in excess of their PTO.
[–]PassTheReefer 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
When you run out of PTO you take the days unpaid, so that’s exactly what happens.
[–]Tysenberg3204 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I’m at work so can’t dig in too much but I found that they don’t have PTO and can take as many days off as they want which is fucking bull shit IMO.
[–]PassTheReefer 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well, THAT IS total bullshit!
[–]scurr 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
And what about missing 40% of your job because you're trying to get a different job?
[–]PassTheReefer 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
To me, 40% is clearly excessive. All I was saying was that a PTO system is in place at a lot of places of work. It works fine. Use it for whatever you need, but it’s obviously a limited amount of time and definitely not 40%. At least not for me.
[+]PilthyPhine -7 points-6 points-5 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I don’t know what type of job you have, but at my fast food part time job as a college student i won’t have mine docked for using a sick day for a literal medical emergency.
Not only that, many candidates cast their vote beforehand so in the event of their absence (emergency or not) their constituents are still represented. Why should a government official be treated worse than his constituents? Aren’t we all equal? If they’re fighting for our voices then why do we wish them harm.

I guess the House minority party shouldn't have showed up too then? They had an equally useless time as the House voted on one completely useless count of impeachment (obstruction). There is a thing called executive privilege. There case affirming Trump's use of it is about to got the SC too. Sounds like he wasn't obstructing anything (unless the SC takes the case and decides he did).
[–][deleted] 6 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link
[–]joebro1060 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
He can't bring the impeachment charges to a vote until the House delivers the charges to the Senate. Currently, the House is holding onto the charges while they try to ensure a "proper" (read: in their party's favor) trial will be conducted by the Senate.

Do you not get sick days at your job? Lol
[–]Tysenberg3204 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I get decent PTO now but a year ago I was only getting like 5 days a year which is not enough to survive. I also know plenty of other people who get little to no PTO at their jobs. Some are getting screwed because they can only find 30 hours of work because businesses want to force them to be part time so they don’t legally have to offer proper benefits.
[–]Tysenberg3204 -2 points-1 points0 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You’re the idiot because I am arguing for the opposite but you’re just too dumb to understand. I think if Senators were held to same work standards as the rest of us that they would be more motivated to write laws to guarantee PTO to all workers.
A doctor's note is required just about everywhere to get your absence "excused". Also, when medical has you out of work for X amount of days then you go on short term disability which usually pays only a percentage of your base salary.
[–]needlepants 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That kinda counters your paid day off if you have to pay a doctor bill. They can’t do much for the flu anyways.
[–]joebro1060 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
A sick day, very frequently, is not a paid day off. Rather, a sick day is an excused abcense which doesn't reflect poorly at all against your work record. Paid time off (PTO) is what you're talking about. People generally accrue PTO hours each check, but they're frequently given X amount of sick days to use throughout the year.
[–]higherlogic 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I’ve never had to show my work a doctors note. I just say I’m sick and don’t work or come in. Maybe if I was out for like 1-2+ weeks I’d have to do it, but not if I’m sick for a day or three.
I'm the same way at my work too, but I don't work at a lower wage job (I suspect you're the same). A relative of mine manages quite a few front line cashier's working a lot closer to minimum wage and I know their employer requires a doctor's note for an absence (or else you get more points towards you, X# of points equals write up/firing/etc).
[–]jackspratt88 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Well if he ran out of his annual 10 paid sick days that most people get, then yes he should be docked pay just like any other working person.
[–]PilthyPhine -2 points-1 points0 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
And what of teachers? Are teachers required to go to every single faculty and staff meeting? Should we dock them every time they miss one, even if it doesn’t pertain to them, or even if it won’t change because of their absence? A teachers’ job is to teach, not to attend meetings — and a politicians’ job is to advocate for their constituents. If they can do that while campaigning, while on sick leave, or in the hospital, then they’re doing their jobs.
It’s not unheard of for politicians to miss hearings, it’s an argument made by uneducated people who don’t know what exactly a senator does to try and demonize politics.
[–]jackspratt88 -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
And to vote on bills for their constituents. Your comparison is way off. Voting on Bill's and whatever else is part of their fucking job. It's not like any of them go to work like regular 9-5 ers anyways. The least they could do is make sure they show up for the votes their constituents got them in for.
I'm surprised you got away from licking your ELECTED member of parliament's arse long enough to type something out.
[–]PilthyPhine -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
First of all, politicians are salaried government employees so they don’t have strict hours to work. They are however, required to have a P.o. box of some kind for their consitituents to make contact (think of the number you call when you’d like to speak to your senator.)
A member of congress’ job isn’t to vote on bills, especially when their vote doesn’t matter against the majority. Republicans did it in the 80’s and 90’s when democrats had majority, and now the democrats are doing it since the republicans have majority. It’s like that one idiot that voted “Present” on the trump impeachment hearing. If she was gonna waste everybody’s time, she may as well be at home responding to her constituents or holding conferences — things that would better serve her jurisdiction.
I’ve said it before, and your childishness is now starting to make sense to me. I’m 100% down for flaming the fuck out of congress. They treat politics like it’s some game, there needs to be a limit on how many times you can be incumbent in office, tear down the entire fucking electoral college because it’s stupid and outdated, stop taking money from lobbyists, actually fucking police the misinformation that journalists are allowed to produce, fix the growing student debt crisis, and stop ruining the fucking planet.
But this? Missing votes that were already determined before you even stepped foot out of the hearing room? To go to rallies and campaign for president of the united states because you actually give a fuck about the country? This ain’t the thing to flame em for, chief.

put it into perspective
This. So. Much. Here's the truth of why it doesn't really matter:
“As much as I think it’s pretty standard practice for senators running for president to be out of the building, there’s also nothing happening here,” said Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.). “There are a lot of days where I wonder whether I should take another job.” Indeed, Senate Democrats are in the minority and most of the votes these days are on judicial nominees that the 2020 candidates almost universally oppose and can’t defeat anyway. “We don’t legislate,” said Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin of Illinois. “We’re dealing strictly with nominations, simple majority requirements. Their presence doesn’t make a difference.”

tl;dr If the majority-controlled senate is taking votes on things that merely require a majority vote, it doesn't matter if the minority members miss the vote.
Does that suck? Yeah. But it doesn't mean they aren't doing their jobs.

[–]jking1226 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Sorry that's not true at all.
I dont know of any "different congress" that can enact federal law besides the House and Senate, unless you are thinking of a "constitutional convention" and theres hasn't been one of those in a long time...
If you read the constitution it actually specifically says that they must determine their own pay, as their pay is determined by law, and congress determines and modifies the law. Article 1, Section 6
People knew about this obvious conflict of interest for 200 years, when the 27th amendment was originally passed, but was only ratified by the required states in 1992 in a backlash to the recurring raises setup in Ethics Reform Act of 1989.

Cory Booker, followed by Sanders at 67% and 66%, based on comments from the post this came from.
[–]EnsignObvious 38 points39 points40 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
That seems to imply that there is a correlation between running a presidential campaign and attendance in Congress, which is not surprising.
Add to the fact that Mitch isn't holding votes for a mountain of bills that the House has passed that these Dem. senators would likely want to vote on there isn't much incentive for them to return to the Hill.
[–]keliix06 26 points27 points28 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
If you look back to any year leading up to an election you will see this same correlation for all candidates.
She also missed 1% of the votes the previous year, so the cause of the spike is pretty obvious.

[–]ArthurRiot -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
I hate these stats. They're selective and bullshit. Cherry picking facts to support a preconceived position.
The high miss count for Gabbard is based on her time running for president. EVERY senator and congressman miss votes while on the campaign trail. Because they're on the campaign trail. They're the political equivalent of excused absences.
Of course Klobloucher(sp) has missed votes; they don't have remote voting on purpose, and she's in the other 50 states trying to become president.
She may be a total dickwad. She might be amazing. Gabbard might be a Russian spy. She might be a victim of propaganda. I don't give a shit either way. But the voting stats here are just justifying already existing feelings.
Don't let yourself get manipulated, just because it justifies what you already believe. If you do, that's on you.

You got voted into office by your constituents to do a job and then decided you wanted a promotion, so you'll just ignore the job you were originally hired to do while asking for people to vote for you again. I'm not okay with that.
I say we give elected officials the same number of days off as the national average for the working class. Miss more than that and you get kicked out of office; we'll hold a new election and find someone willing to do the job.
[–]ArthurRiot 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Then you are saying people in Congress aren't allowed to run for president. Which is anti-constitutional.
Presidents get voted into office by their constituents as well. And their constituents have a say on whether they want to keep them.
Again, you're cherry picking based on... You don't like people you can't vote for missing votes. Which is odd.
They can run, they just have to vote.
Is it anymore “anti-constitutional” than me not being able to miss work? Maybe I want to run. Does my boss have to give me time off to run?

Truth is you do know something about me...I dont swallow Trumps nonsense. Apparently you cannot say the same thing. Hope you got some good kneepads for Christmas.
so I say again, She was right about Trump and none of the whining or crying, twisting or lying that comes out of Trumpster Dumpters is going to change that one single bit. the biggest error you can make is to believe that just because America is stupid enough to elect that fool, that somehow it makes it sensible and good for the country....its neither.

Right?! Just because it's a woman who got roasted doesn't mean she was trying to use her femininity to her advantage.

Because it's a female
[–]feddau 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (30 children) | Copy Link
The missed votes are likely at least partially because she's running for president and has campaign stops everywhere. I'm not saying that I approve, but male senators that have run for president have missed plenty of votes too. Not exactly the type of content that this sub was built around..
[–]twothumbs 28 points29 points30 points 6 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
There were only 4 ppl that missed more votes than her, but they were smart enough not to try and throw shade.
[+]feddau -9 points-8 points-7 points 6 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
Sure, but do you really think that she was expecting to not have this thrown back in her face just because she's a female? That would be absurd..
Politicians say and do hypocritical shit all the time anticipating that the public will not notice or hold them to account. It happens all the time.
[–]twothumbs 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
That's kinda impossible to prove one way or the other, which makes your argument incredibly dumb. Why can't you just admit you're defending her because you hate trump?
[–]feddau -5 points-4 points-3 points 6 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Hey! Alright! Thanks for calling my very reasonable assertion dumb! You seem like a real peach!
I was simply pointing out that it doesn't seem likely (to me) that she expected her stupid twitter post to be thrown back in her face because she's a female. I think that would have been incredibly naive of her. I don't agree with her politics, but I don't think she's that stupid.
Male and female politicians on both sides have criticized the incumbent president for playing too much golf regularly for decades, and I'm sure that if we look back we can find several of them have offered that criticism while also having missed an unconscionable number of votes. I haven't even mentioned Trump in this conversation. You brought plenty of your own biases into the conversation.
I'm going to be done here. I hope you've got better shit to do today too. Good luck on your journey!
[–]twothumbs 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Lmao why do people think parroting their original point in a longer comment is a proper response to being questioned.
Like yes, you said all that already and it doesn't sound any smarter in essay form
[–]feddau -3 points-2 points-1 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Haha. Cool. Alright. I'll bite then. Why do you think my perspective is stupid, and why do you think its evidence of some underlying hatred of Trump?
[–]twothumbs 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
That's kinda impossible to prove one way or the other, which makes your argument incredibly dumb.
Meaning, she obviously thought she wouldn't suffer any blowback and that her constant absence wouldn't be remarked upon. The reason is probably for a couple different things, while it would be impossible to deduce those reasons, one is probably cuz she has a vag.
The reason i think you have tds is because you're reaching so very hard for this post to be invalid, because you like when trump looks bad and trump haters look good. Why else would you write a full on essay on a really dumb paper thin premise?
[–]BigglesNZ 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You would've won this argument in my eyes had you just left it at "I'm going to be done here". But you're been reeled in by a troll, so you lose!
[–]102938475601 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I don’t think she expected it. Or at least she wouldn’t expect it would be said and then posted to a place like this where it will be really noticed. What I do think she expected and what more than likely happened was this comment was buried under a flood of supportive anti-Trump comments in a blind, brainwashed rage of protest by those still angry Trump is President.
[–]feddau -2 points-1 points0 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You're saying that you think she expected this comment to not get too much attention due to the flood of anti-Trump rhetoric in her Twitter feed?
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link
That’s definitely true but it’s kinda stupid to criticize trump for the whole golf thing then missing a bunch of votes. Of course, the 2 aren’t the same thing but still, she can’t be the one saying that
[–]feddau 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Has she criticized Trump for playing too much golf? I wouldn't be surprised. She needs media attention and that's low-hanging fruit. That would be a stupid thing for her to criticize though.. after all she obviously lives in a glass house.
That said, I do think that presidential golf trips weigh more than missed votes in senate. Especially when those votes were missed because of one's involvement in a presidential campaign. Just my opinion. I hated it when Obama did it too.
[–]scrufdawg 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]WantsYouToChillOut 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
If we were talking about trump missing days because he’s campaigning or doing something else even slightly relevant to his job then this criticism would make a lot more sense.
Trump is missing days by using taxpayer money (on resorts that he owns) to participate in a leisurely activity that he himself criticized Obama for.
Klobuchar is missing votes to run for president, which is absolutely relevant to her job.
Also, this has nothing to do with Klobuchar thinking she can use her gender for anything. This really doesn’t fit this sub. It’s clearly just a “haha stupid women” sub now.
[–]th1s1smypassw0rd 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

[–]th1s1smypassw0rd 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
I’m not disagreeing with that. But let’s not give her a pass for doing a shit job bc she wants to further her carrier. She doesn’t give a fuck about you or I, and neither does Trump, so why the fuck should we stick up for them?
[–]WantsYouToChillOut 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Because one is clearly miles better. At least she’s not using taxpayer money to benefit herself while doing it, and the president should always be held to a higher standard. Like all of these “muh both sides” arguments, what Trump is doing is clearly worse.

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points26 points 6 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
This. And furthermore, conducting business in a casual setting is often much more efficient because people are less confrontational.
This is a large part of the reason so many high level businesses meetings, or JV meetings are held in casual setting like dinner, or a sauna.
That said, I don't know whether or not trump is actually leveraging the golf time, maybe he is, maybe he isn't.

No. I don't buy it. I'm not buying at all into "The president can run the country while doing 18 holes" any more. None of you people in this thread has a job you can do while golfing simultaneously. Even a golf groundskeeper would get fired for that shit. I don't care what party you are, you can not effectively run the United States while playing golf unless it happens to be a slow day. If you're going to vote no, but you know the other side already has enough "yes" votes to pass it easily, what's the point really of leaving your constituents to cast a meaningless vote. People already know your stance on issues.
[–]LegacyAccountComprom 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That's fair in the real world. But when you're elected to represent people it's not just your job or responsibility, it's a duty, they take an oath.

Is this sub just "woman says something stupid, and gets told off for it" now? Where is the pussy pass being used in this situation?
You guys realize that for a pussy pass to be denied, it has to be invoked in the first place, right?

All the people in the comments mad Klobuchar missed some votes when Moscow Bitch McConnell is holding up hundreds of pieces of legitimate legislation. 🙄
Not appropriate for this forum. OP's mommy issues have gotten the best of him.
Side note: The Senator was correct and the possibly correct response does nothing to change that.

Missed those votes as she's running for president.
Missed 1% last year.

Honestly, it's insane in this day and age that members have to be physically present to cast a vote. They could very easily transmit publicly their intended vote and even have staff members physically "register" the vote at the Senate. You can do the voting part of the job from a distance. The constituency work is far more dependent on proximity, in my opinion.
Frankly, even if she's out campaigning ( i.e. not just in her riding ), that can have members hearing from fellow citizens even if they're not from her constituency directly.
If, on the other hand, these are simply useful excuses for not registering their position on one policy proposal or another a distance voting mechanism would be useful in exposing that.
[–]castor281 -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The problem with this is it's looking at a microcosm and implying that it's the overall norm. The four senators with higher missed votes percentages are Sanders(63.2%), Warren(53.6), Harris(61.8%), and Booker(64.6%), all of who happen to be running for president.
You can scroll this link to see missed votes percentages for all senators.
And here are the pages for Sanders, Warren, Klobuchar, Harris, and Booker. You can scroll to the bottom to see their missed votes history as a whole and it's nowhere near as bad as this post would have you think. Klobuchar, for example missed 0.0% of votes in 33 of the 52 quarters shes been in congress and missed less than 3.0% in 45 of the 52.
And everybody that keeps saying if they missed that much work they would be fired is looking at the senate like it's a regular 9-5 job. Imagine if, just to keep your current job, every six years you had to convince half of the employees at your company that you're worth keeping around rather than hire the new guy that has applied. Now imagine if you wanted that big promotion you've always dreamed of you had to convince half of the people at your company AND half of the people in the 49 other companies in your field of industry that you are worth promoting. There would HAVE to be a system in place where you're allowed to miss some work around the time of your campaign.
She has missed 155 out of 396 votes which sound terrible until you realize that 135 of those missed votes were either for nominations or cloture votes. These are all majority votes that are gonna go however the majority wants them to. Of the 20 votes that were not nominations or cloture votes, they involved 7 different bills and represent 0.05 percent of the total votes in the 116th congress.
Not to bad when you weed out all the meaningless votes.

https://www.politico.com/news/2019/11/15/senate-voting-records-070916
Of the candidates running for president, Cory Booker, Kamala Harris and Sanders have missed about 200 Senate votes each this year. That amounts to more than half — 58 percent — of votes for Booker, followed closely by Harris and Sanders, who have missed about 56 percent. Elizabeth Warren has missed 44 percent of Senate votes, while Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Michael Bennet have missed the least amount of votes at about 30 percent each.
[–]rooteen -4 points-3 points-2 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
It should also say a lot that Klobuchar has missed the least amount of votes relative to the other candidates. I’m not even a fan of her but the fact that she has a better attendance than some other candidates is important
[–]Damit84 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Please correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't a senator get payed to sit in senate and do senatory stuff? Isn't it her job?
If I told my boss "I've only missed 30% of workdays this year, that is way less than any of my colleagues.", what do you think would happen to me?
[+]rooteen -6 points-5 points-4 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Once again, she’s only missed 4.9% of workdays in her career. Her attendance is much better than her voting record, because a lot of the time her attendance isn’t important whatsoever for the confirmations. Also, your boss would be understanding if you’re missing workdays for interviews with the higher ups in the company. False equivalence
[–]Damit84 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'm honestly curious. If she missed 5% of her workdays but 30% of the votes. Are there that many votes on a single day and she just missed a or two day in a months that had like 20 to 30 votes or are there that little votes altogether?
[–]rooteen 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The confirmation hearings usually have several votes a day
[–]twothumbs -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's retarded. Even 5% is a lot. Also we can say that her attendance was important for the says she missed considering she missed a third of the votes
[+]rooteen -6 points-5 points-4 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
This is what presidential campaigns do to people, they have to miss votes. That’s why McCain’s record was so bad in 2008.
[–]Spooky2000 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
You just said she only missed 5% and I just showed you she has missed 30%. No moving the goalposts when you are proven wrong.
[–]rooteen -5 points-4 points-3 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
The link provided by the other person says her career average is 4.9% missed. That’s not 30%.
[–]Spooky2000 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
30% this year. Tweet in OP claims 39% this year, this is showing 30% this year. Not 4.9% for her career.
[–]rooteen -2 points-1 points0 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It’s important to look at the whole career due to how much the campaign trail affects her attendance. Also, roll calls show how many times she came to the congressional meetings. They don’t vote every time.
[–]rooteen -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You’re counting the times that they’ve voted, while I’m counting the roll calls they were present for. And being present for roll calls are more important than the votes, considering most of those votes were confirming nominations in which their presence would not affect the outcome whatsoever. They showed up a lot more than their voting presence because of all of the confirmation votes where their attendance doesn’t matter
Your lady doth be in another castle good sir.
