I’ve (20s F) had this question for a while and while many people will say no, I have doubts.

Example: at a summer job I knew a guy who was telling me that he was thinking about breaking up with his gf, but they ended up getting married. I saw on FB they now have a kid.

Another: in college a guy in my friend group was complaining because he had been planning on breaking up with his gf but her best friend tragically completed suicide and he felt like he couldn’t or he would be an asshole. They are now married, and I just saw on Facebook she is pregnant.

Third: I knew another couple in college who I was friends with who fought all the time and eventually the girl started telling us they were thinking about opening up their relationship. They ended up getting married.

Fourth: a female acquaintance whose wedding I attended immediately started cheating on her husband once he left for a deployment (he’s in the army)

I was to preface by saying if I get married I never want to get divorced. I know life happens but come on, to me these are red flags in the very BEGINNING of a relationship where you lose very little by cutting the cord.

What is it about marriage that is so important people will ignore obvious red flags to jump into it as quickly as possible? Am I the idiot for not wanting to be in a loveless, shitty marriage or be cheated on? Everyone my age is obsessed with it and it makes me feel like I’m not getting something. If you are second guessing whether you want to be with a person in a relationship, isn’t that a sign you should probably think twice before marriage?
