I suppose it depends on how you define echo chamber. this is a group whose subject is one that the majority of the members largely agree on, and it's also a subject that deeply affects them, and so neutral discussions aren't always possible (if someone comes in asking why it matters that only men are drafted, or that men are treated harsher under the law, a lot of people will get pissed off before, or during them asking that person why they hold such opinions. we're only human)

if that makes it an echo chamber, then I suppose it is one, but also all advocacy groups would be one, and nearly all interest based groups.

But do people get banned here for asking questions, or challenging the popular ideas here? No. they do if they're being extremely uncivil (name calling/personal attacks).

If someone posts something people disagree with, many people (I wouldn't go as far as saying most) here will also write replies that actually engage with the ideas presented, even if it sometimes comes with a tone. that's more than a lot of similar spaces can say.

If you hang around here, will you feel like it's an echo chamber? probably a bit, especially if it's your main external interaction with these topics.

But also consider this: this is one of the only places on the entirety of the internet that has this particular view on equality. You can consider this place a source of information, because even a fully non-echo chamber will not present the positions of the people here, when 99.9% of other people are either conservative, or feminist (I like to think about all of the gender related "debates" they have on jubilee, and how through all that, not a single egalitarian-intending person ever appeared)

I think its important to use that "Nuance" you mentioned earlier..
In my experience at least the people who "Says something we don't agree with" or "Asks a question" are usually feminists who are either rage baiting us or concern trolling..

They start from the view point of us living within a "Patriarchy" as being self-evident and then they usually go on to blame most if not all the issues we as men face on said "Patriarchy"

They are not open to "Nuance" or even open to the idea of having their established narrative of us living within a "Patriarchy" questioned or challenged.

I'm someone who wants to learn and I'm not stuck in my perspective but I also believe in science and evidence.

That's awesome! I also am someone who believes in science and evidence.. yet often those who come here to post opinions which go against the grain often do not listen to any evidence we bring up to refute their claims..

How do you expect us to be open or accept things people are saying when we have evidence that disproves what they are saying?

There are some very strong arguments to be made that under equal conditions, men don't naturally live shorter lives than women. I've made that argument, and even an entire post about it. This is one of those societal biases we have: when we see an outcome that is worse for women (for example, say, fewer women in tech), we (as a society, that is) assume the problem is... men (of course). That's the a priori assumption. But when we see an outcome that is worse for men, we assume that's just the natural order of things. In other words, the problem is again, men.

But to your larger point... yes and no. I think some people automatically downvote anything they don't agree with, even if it's written in good faith. Some people will even want you banned because they don't agree with you, and they don't want voices that run counter to their own narrative. That can't be helped. But to their credit, mods here don't seem to give in to that and thus create an echo chamber, while maintaining the character of the sub. There are other men's subs that have been outright taken over by feminists and have assumed all the characteristics of the worst and most toxic feminist subs. It's a hard balance to maintain. But that resistance against blatant banning that you've noticed, is the key difference.

Every subreddit is an echo chamber to a large extent. However, this subreddit is pretty good at not shitting on views they don’t agree with. Honestly, it’s just good that you’re realizing that you are in an anti-male echo chamber and want to break out.

If I was you, I would use both echo chambers to balance you out. Works for me and keeps me from falling into entrenched beliefs.

I hope we all try to keep it from becoming an echo chamber, but it requires constant vigilance. As to the post about the physical strength disparity, I personally saw only comments that were disputing the OP’s claim that there wasn’t a significant disparity. People making stupid claims will get called out.

It is a bit of an echo-chamber, but not too bad.

I have found it refreshing to find a place where discussing how misandry is actually… not good, does not get downvoted into oblivion.

But, a week or so ago, I mentioned how there have been times where women have had legitimate grievances warranting organized opposition citing voting rights… and I did get downvoted. But, like -1 rather than -30.

Still not great. I would not feel comfortable being part of a space that was merely anti-women, and I do pick up some of that bias here.

So, it’s not as bad as one sees on something like /r/feminism or XX, where anything sniffing at all of defying the hivemind gets swarmed, but it appears we have picked up some proportion of the same sorts of attitudes that I would criticize as binary us .vs them pro/con for/against divisive thinking.

I guess it is a bit of an echo chamber, but it’s a pretty faint echo.

The fact that your post hasn’t been removed is a pretty good indication that it’s not an echo chamber so much as the one place we have to safely discuss these issues. The fact that we’re marginalized by the overwhelmingly feminist mainstream intellectual infrastructure isn’t evidence that it’s an echo chamber, it’s evidence that we’re marginalized.

I do agree with your criticism, and I think it is an important point to make. We have to keep ourselves to a higher standard than all the anti-male the echo chambers we criticize frequently.

That being said, I still think this sub is less of an echo chamber than all other gender issue subs I've seen. Dissenting opinions will be challenged and probably downvoted, but not banned. It's a partisan sub by definition, after all.

I'm quite new here myself, but based on what I've seen so far, blatant hate and hostility seem to get banned regardless of which side they're aimed at. In my book that's a good thing. Maybe even more telling is the fact, that I don't think I've seen a gender issue sub with less deleted comments over all. The mods seem quite liberal (pls excuse me using a 'bad' word in what's I hope is a good way) and there don't seem to be a lot of hateful comments here. That's a good thing, too, and we should keep it that way.

This sub definitely has a set of subjects on which its regular posters mostly agree on main points. And that's a good thing, I think? Because it would kind of be a mess otherwise.

I see this place as a refuge for people who disagree with the insanity of 99% of gender discourse out in the world to get some relief from seeing that they're not alone. That there are indeed other sane people in the world. To help each other refine our understanding of the topic and the ability of our messaging to maybe put a dent in the insanity out there. And to serve as a source of information for anyone who wanders in with an open mind.

If we didn't have a good amount of agreement on basic things, we wouldn't serve any of those purposes. If someone's looking for a place for people who disagree with each other to debate, there's PurplePillDebates.

Of course, there's a difference between agreement and dogmatism, and dogmatism is bad. I don't think we have any issues with dogmatism around here? But I'd be open to a good faith argument that this isn't true.

I think we have a pretty healthy amount of variety among the views of posters here. We mostly agree on basic stances on most issues. But you'll see a lot of debate on the details surrounding those issues. For example, I don't think this sub is anywhere close to echo chambering on evolutionary psychology or whether or not cultural gender norms can be a positive thing.

I do think we have a problem with reactionary hostility. I often see people wander in here who appear to be attempting to engage in good faith and curiosity, but get attacked and downvoted to oblivion when they express ideas that are unpopular to the sub. A bit of hypervigilance in how people interpret wording, too. And this is the one point that I would grant is a feature of echo chambers. But I don't think that point alone is enough to label us an echo chamber.

I don't know how our society achieves egalitarianism without an open dialogue and people willing to hear each other out.

The problem is that tribalism, propaganda, cultish ideology, and fear mongering will always win against rationality, empiricism, and tolerance. Humans have a deep psychological need to find a group (preferably like-minded) with whom they can belong.

Egalitarianism is abstract, and it doesn’t name an oppressor the way “patriarchy” does. I think we need good slogans to rally around.

We see it sometimes with “all war is class war” and similar exhortations to focus on socioeconomic disadvantage instead of immutable identity characteristics. But that’s more of an economic-left angle than a strictly egalitarian one.

“Liberté, egalité, fraternité” worked for the French Revolution
“One person, one vote” (issue-specific; doesn’t resound as well as “one man one vote”, I can’t think of a better formulation)
“Equal pay for equal work” or “same job, same pay” (also issue-specific, the second is better because it ties the pay scale to the job function, not the amount of effort)
“The brotherhood of Man” (arguably more Humanist than Egalitarian, and again, how to reformulate this as gender-inclusive?)
“Equal rights” (hey, USA, how’s that ERA going?)

Anyone got some other suggestions?

I think the unfortunate truth is if you're going against the crowd you have to put extra effort to phrase your point I a way that avoids triggering people. This is true for any subreddit.

Lil bit, but that's natural for an advocacy sub. Typically I don't see people outright blaming women for things, or scapegoating them. I think the average person here will not disagree that women have problems that are serious. I think most of the people here would agree that men and women have problems in roughly equal measure. There's a decent amount that probably think that men have it worse.

I'd say the general position here is also towards egalitarianism.

Of course it has attributes of an echo chamber. All ideologies do. But a true echo chamber I think of is when people just parrot something that the leader says even if it’s widely contradictory to something earlier said.

Specifically to this board I do think that some posts made in good faith get downvoted unfairly.

I’ve accepted this long ago. Almost every group you’ll find is exactly that…an echo chamber. You just have to find the one you like the most.

I personally don’t like preaching to the choir a lot mainly because unless new things are being said, there’s no point. This is why I try to get feminists to respond to my posts on this sub. They’re the ones I want to reach to but going to any feminist sub has gotten me banned.

By virtue of being a subreddit, it's an echo chamber, but insofar as we generally share the same ideals of egalitarianism, men's activism, and tackling misandry propagated by feminist circles and mainstream media.

From what I've seen, this is more tolerant than most left-wing subs I've encountered. I was invited to a few other "men's rights" groups by users from here, even asked to moderate one. Upon investigating the sub, it seemed like they just wanted to bash women, which isn't why I'm here. I love the women in my life.

The 'left wing' part of it is definitely something I wish it stuck a bit more to. Leftists are much more able to be dispassionately incisive about this sort of thing, which should ideally lead to less pathology and emotional arguments/judgments, but you do still see it here. If I had one piece of advice for posters here, it's to try and keep your emotions in check and be above the stupidity of genderslop discourse.

Like, my main critique is that liberal feminism is a huge failure because of the liberal part, not the feminist part. It corrupts feminism for the same reason liberalism corrupts everything else it touches, it sucks the economic and class question out of the dynamic entirely, which is the elephant in the room that everything else revolves around. Without that, they have to fill the void with some other explanatory mechanism, which is where you get culture and privilege discourse that lays the fault of huge social trends at the feet of individual people instead of institutions. Liberalism is a right wing ideology, and this is the classic right wing personal responsibility argument combined with great man of history theory writ small, masquerading as progressivism. This results in the fundamental stupidity and wrongness of the right somehow getting blamed on the left, specifically because liberals and liberal feminists are NOT leftists, but proudly claim to be so and then suck all the air out of the room.

Historical materialism allows you to very soberly and dispassionately do things like discuss the origins and solutions to problems like patriarchal social relations and the condition of women in society, WITHOUT generating a huge amount of pathological reaction that is inevitable in the alternative. Because without that, as we see, you end up doing utterly asinine nonsense like somehow blaming the white teenage boy selling energy drinks at 7/11 for the oppression of women and saying he 'benefits' from it, and that's the source of the problem. That somehow it's his individual prerogative to 'be better' and stop it, no fucking shit people don't like that. It makes absolutely no sense, and it leads to disastrous reactionary backlash because it's so stupid and inflammatory.

You can do that sort of thing and it's very, very important that we do, but it's important to not let yourself become a reactionary about feminism or women in general.
