That's cute. I think old people in love is cute to us because it gives us hope that if age robs us of our attractiveness it doesn't rob us of our love.

As for a door opening, id say thank you but it's really not a plus or a negative, it's a sweet gesture but out of touch with the times.

I think it is old-fashioned and also ridiculous. Holding a door open for someone when you walk through that door as well is okay and the polite thing to do (as opposed to letting the door slam in their face), but for a car door, it is just ridiculous to walk around the car to hold the door open for another person, only so that you have to walk around the car again to get to your own seat.

I think at least part of the reason why your wife thought it was cute is that they were old people. I also think romantic gestures (even the ones I don't appreciate) just become a lot cuter when the couple has been together for a while, and with elderly people, it is likely that they have been married for 50 years or so already.

I think it is nice. Even when I go to the gym if a man is ahead of me he holds the door open, I always say thank you sir, because you have manners for shit where I live if you do not say "sir" and "ma'am" to people you do not know well. People are so caught up in ideological bullshit they do not know how to be gracious in every day settings as evidenced by this thread. Decent manners, not exaggerated ones, are useful a social lubricant.

I think it's different with a married vs. a gf or even first date. The first can just be something nice and considerate or a bit of old fashioned romance when life is otherwise probably pretty unromantic with work, kids, chores, etc. and you know your spouse well enough to know if this gesture is appreciated. With a first date it seems a bit try hard and like you want to impress with somewhat outdated gestures.

It seems incredibly archaic to me.

Other things (like holding a door open) don’t seem so archaic as it’s much more in the “normal” flow of things. But getting out, running round the front, then opening the door on her side ? That seems weird.

I consider this a non-issue and couples are responsible for setting their own boundaries and rules.

Or put it otherwise. If I open the door for her and she thinks it's sweet... that's fine. If she says she doesn't like it... that's fine. If she starts pulling sexism cards and stuff (aka not being reasonable) - I'd consider terminating the relationship.

You lock both door on the first date. Then you follow her to the passenger side and unlock her door with the key to let her in. If she doesn't reach across to unlock your door for you before you get to the other side, you drop her off and ghost her ass!
