Now, I was doing a study based on trauma a woman experiences during sexual assault and to my shock discovered that not just arousal, the possibility of woman experiencing an orgasm during rape is also present,

If those women can't orgasm from PIV, what makes you think they will orgasm from PIV rape? These are two different populations of women.

What physiological changes,

Blood rushing to the vaginal area, swelling of the clitoris, lubrication and opening of the vaginal canal. Have you really never had sex before?

A good argument can be made for fear. Getting the blood pumping means physical responses are exaggerated and arousal (in the physical sense, not in the 'oh she wants this' way) can happen easier. However, fear on it's own is also not enough, otherwise women would be waaaay more into horror movies. The answer you are looking for is still physical stimulation.

That is just a hypothesis that comes from taking at face-value the RP fairytale that women in some parts developed their mental flexibility in adjusting to a new partner because they basically had to when they where robbed and raped by another tribe. So whatever I say now is mere speculation and probably not true. Also, bear in mind that not all behavior or traits that exists have to have meaning from an evolutionary perspective. There is behavior that comes with neither advantage nor disadvantage and that might just be inherited nevertheless. Physical pleasure from rape could be just something like that. Involuntary, mere response to physical stimulation.

So with all that said... during orgasm the cervix contracts and with the contractions is basically goes down and soaks sperm into itself. Therefore women who orgasm have a higher probability for pregnancy. Being robbed and raped by a new tribe and then getting pregnant immediately might just increase the odds of survival, because suddenly you carry one of "them" in you which will drastically raise your value in the eyes of the new tribe and instead of treating you as a sex-slave they might suddenly start to consider you as one of them and turn protective and nurturing.

So "orgasm" and thus higher probability of pregnancy might just prove useful in terms of survival, which could also explain why in less threatening situations sole mechanical physical stimulation does not have the same effect. Then it should be adrenaline by which it is mediated. The more threatening the bigger the need for a survival mechanism, e.g. pregnancy.

Then there is also have the hypothesis that in dangerous situations people are more likely to associate the adrenaline from a mild threat with the adrenaline from the excitement due to the other person.

So all in all one might be able to construct a consistent picture from all of this. The question is if it really is plausible and "true" or if it is just mental gymnastics...

Of those who report their rapes, around 4–5% also describe experiencing orgasm. But the true numbers are likely much higher. In a 2004 review paper, a clinician reports, "I (have) met quite a lot of victims (males) who had the full sexual response during sexual abuse…I (have) met several female victims of incest and rape who had lubrication and orgasm."

Okay but further down :

"I've assisted more young women than I can count with this very issue…There have been very few studies on orgasm during rape, but the research so far shows numbers from 10% to over 50% having this experience. In my experience as a therapist, it has been somewhat less than half of the girls/women I've worked with. (For the record, I have worked with very few boys/men who reported this.) In professional discussions, colleagues report similar numbers."

Alright. As a survivor of sexual assault (no, I did not orgasm, in case you were wondering) and friend of many survivors of sexual assault, I'm trying not to puke as I type so I'll just leave an anecdote.

A male friend of mine was raped by a woman. The last thing he remembers before passing out is going to bed alone but hearing someone sneak in. He woke up again to a woman having sex with him just as he finished inside her. Obviously he was upset over the fact that it happened, the fact that he could have contracted an STI, and the potential for pregnancy. But what really messed with his head for YEARS, and ultimately prevented him from pressing charges, was the fact that he finished. He didn't want this. He was completely vulnerable. I doubt he was "in to" it. But biology did its thing, and it wrecked him mentally.

From what I've heard, arousal during sexual assault is not just a result of the physical touch, but also a built-in survival mechanism from the days of yore. Better chance of surviving if you lay back and think of England than provoke the assailant. I don't think this has to do with any b.s. about women desiring a man overpowering her or getting off on it.

False, often women who get raped associate orgasms with the event and get panic attacks/ptsd attacks if someone tries to initiate sex or if they orgasm. That’s not pleasure. Secondly you can make someone orgasm by passing certain electrical stimuli in the brain, is merely a response.

I think your question boils down to: why do women who don’t orgasm normally from sex, orgasm during rape?

The data clearly shows it’s a tiny percentage of women who actually orgasm from rape, stop going of anecdotal evidence or conjecture. So that’s one factor. Secondly as people have pointed out adrenaline makes blood pump faster- therefore more blood in the vagina -> more “arousal” for lack of a better word.

Basically: chances are those women who orgasm already could and even if they couldn’t more blood flow to her area increases “arousal” and an orgasm is merely an electrical impulse just like most other things physiological.

There’s a good ted talk about this

Having an orgasm does not equal enjoyment. It equals a physiological response to stimuli. Your clitoris and vagina (and penis) can become aroused and orgasm from something that your brain may not find arousing or enjoyable - it’s adjacent to what is normally arousing and enjoyable and your body just reacts.

Men can get boners in inappropriate contexts, just as women can get aroused in inappropriate contexts. What matters is the consent and desire. You can also have women who are really into having sex but are not lubricating or getting aroused - but they still want to have sex. Or men who want to have sex but can’t get an erection. Sometimes there’s a mismatch between our conscious desires and our physical responses.

What a person says they want/don’t want is all that matters. A woman getting wet or having an orgasm during rape does not mean she actually wants it or enjoys it - her body is responding separately from her higher brain. And women can and do orgasm from PiV and you can’t discount that the rapist might actually be trying to get this response also - by stimulating the clitoris or performing cunnilingus. Many rapists are doing it for power and humiliation - what greater power is there than humiliating your victim by forcing an orgasm against his/her will?

How common is what in a marriage or a committed relationship? I'm not sure what you're asking.

Regarding your second question, my understanding is that a "dead bedroom" is a lack of sex, not specifically a lack of orgasm. I think the general situation is someone, for any number of reasons, not having an interest in or wanting to engage in sex.

You may have heard before that many women have trouble reaching orgasm, and that being relaxed or psychologically aroused can help. Those things are true. However, that doesn't mean that being psychologically unaroused or even disgusted will necessarily prevent an orgasm from occurring.

The genitals are filled with nerve endings. If those nerve endings are stimulated in the right way (which may be different depending on the person), an orgasm will occur. This also explains why some women have trouble reaching orgasm - they (or their partners) may not know how to stimulate them in whatever the right way is for them. (Side note: There are also medical disorders or medications that may hinder or prevent orgasm.)

How many people do you think are aware of this?

I'm not sure, but not enough. It's not uncommon for sexual assault victims to feel extreme shame if they experienced orgasm during assault. Also, the existence of this post illustrates a need for more education on the subject.

How many of them should be made aware of this ?

As many as possible, I'd say. HOWEVER, the fact that orgasms are a physiological response doesn't mean that people should do away with things like foreplay or psychological arousal in normal, healthy relationships. It can be very painful for a woman to have sex if she's not properly aroused (and even if she is). Some women also feel shame or like they're "defective" if they're unable to orgasm, so just expecting it to happen isn't helpful either.

and would a woman who has experienced this live a healthy sex life with her future partner?

This is very individualized and depends on a number of factors, such as how the woman feels about herself and her assault, whether she received support in dealing with it (e.g. counselling), and so on. Many women who have been assaulted are able to go on to have healthy sex lives with future partners.

Pretty sure.

I mean check all the male protagonists in erotic novels, brute muscular guys who over power women despite her saying no and through lust get her to agree to the act of sex

Attraction to the idea or near experience of danger doesn't mean you actually want to be harmed. People ride roller coasters and participate in extreme sports for similar reasons a woman might read that sort of thing. The rush of plunging down a mountain and dodging obstacles is satisfying, but that doesn't mean skiers secretly want to smash into trees.

I would also point out that a LOT of male oriented porn involves simulated rape. This doesn't mean that all men who watch hentai are rapists in waiting.

And why then is this emotional arousal missing on marriages over a period of time ( 7 YEAR ITCH)

Emotional and physical arousal are different chemical processes. Oxytocin is mostly responsible for female pair bonding, but it does nothing to inspire sexual arousal for us. Thus, a woman can feel deeply in love with a man and not necessarily want to fuck him right then and there. Most women have to rely on low levels of testosterone/vasopressin and situational excitement to achieve sexual arousal.

Vasopressin, on the other hand, is mostly responsible for male pair bonding and it DOES contribute to sexual arousal alongside testosterone.

The way I understand it, if a man wants to avoid a dead bedroom (or 7 year itch, whatever) with a hormonally typical woman, he needs to actively excite her. By that same token a woman who wants to foster a pair bond with a hormonally typical man has to keep having sex with him.

It's really more complicated than that, but that's the gist of it.

Do you know what happens to the body during arousal and orgasm? Do you know what happens to the body when a person is frightened or in extreme crisis? Do you understand that these are very similar physiological processes?

Orgasms aren't magic. They're a physical response to stimuli. Arousal and orgasm are largely caused by blood flow to the genitals and create such responses as increased heart rate, rapid breathing etc. The adrenal response when a person experiences danger or trauma is very similar; blood flows to the extremities (including the genitals), heart rate quickens, breathing speeds up. The physiological responses are much the same and lead to similar outcomes; this isn't rocket science.

The reason a woman might orgasm while being raped and not during normal PIV intercourse with a partner (which, we have no evidence that these populations of women even overlap much or at all, but just for the sake of discussion) is that women experiencing a traumatic rape often disassociate. Meaning her mind and her physical body are not communicating at all; the woman is "checked out" and not really even experiencing what's happening to her physically. Simply put, this allows the body to respond to the stimuli without being filtered through the conscious mind. The arousal and orgasm aren't a result of desire and being turned on (again, her mind is checked out completely, so she's incapable of experiencing those things at the moment); it's the body reacting to severe trauma and trying to protect itself from injury.

Obviously, women having consensual PIV with a partner aren't experiencing disassociation and the adrenal response to fear/trauma, so their body isn't going to react in the same way. It's very rare (I'd argue maybe even impossible) for a woman to be turned on to the point where she's experiencing the same adrenal rush she would experience during a traumatic rape. Therefore a woman having consensual sex is going to require more warming up, foreplay and external stimulation to reach orgasm. Many women also have mental barriers to orgasm (anxiety, self consciousness etc.) which aren't present during the disassociation that occurs during a traumatic rape.
