Hi RPW, I've been a lurker for a long time, but this is the first time I'm posting.

My husband and I are 30 years old, been married for 10 years. We had an argument yesterday when I was looking for a new dining table for our house, and I told him I loved it so much but it was so overpriced I was a bit let down. I just moved on though, but he noticed how much I wanted it, and he said he would craft it for me.

He is masculine, kind and protective, but he has always been a computer-type of man. His skills aren't particularly physical, but he has done carpentry before, some beds, fixing the roof, etc. I confess he has learned stuff he has no clue of just to get me or help me get through something.

That said, I told him that was impossible for him and I admit I laughed a little, but just in a jokey manner because he looked cute when he offered. He didn't say anything after that for many hours and things started to get tense. He wasn't talking, wasn't showing interest in what I was talking about, and he got very distant.

Yesterday I confronted him and asked what was happening, and he confessed he was shocked by my response on that matter. He literally said "I know you are aware you did something wrong. Until now you have been the only person who has encouraged me to do things not even I knew I was capable of, and I would have done that table for you if you asked me, I would have done anything, no matter how long would take me."

I value his honesty and understand how he feels, but I think he is overreacting a bit and making a big mess out of something small. He said "something inside me feels dead. We have supported each other when others have turned their backs to us. I never expected hearing these words from you, and I'm sorry if you think this is dramatic, but it was really hurtful coming from you"

Now he is obsessed in learning carpentry and buying stuff apparently only to teach me a lesson, but avoided me the entire day.

Just some minutes ago I confronted him again, trying to be honest with him. I told him I did know he was a super man capable of many things, but making that particular table was just out of his reach. I reaffirmed it was impossible for him, but that didn't matter to me and I love him anyway, so please stop acting like a child.

I said... ok, do what whatever you want. But he exploded after and told me some really hurtful things.

"You have no idea how unfair you are being. I recommend you to meditate of what you are doing because I'm not going to tolerate an obstacle in my life. I thought you were here to encourage me, not the opposite. If you think this is impossible for me you are really wrong. Sure, its not easy either nor I'm talented, but I've learned and done harder things for you in the past, and I would have done this for you too. Instead, you decide to tell me I'm being childish and ridiculous. I decided to give you some time to reconsider your words and actions, but I see it was in vain. You have changed. The woman I fell in love with would have thrown a saw and hammer as soon as I offered to make her table. I lost my respect for you."

I was super shocked after that and couldn't react before he left god knows where. I haven't seen him yet after.

Please help me understand what's happening. I love my man, but I'm a bit hurt by his last words and I still think is something really small to worry about. I could have just bought another table.
