ive been trying to wake up at 6 to work out in the morning before work but all Ive managed to do so far is give myself more time for breakfast which I used to rush through. I guess baby steps. Weekends kill my progress tho

Waking up early doesn't give you more time if you have to go bed earlier to get the same amount of sleep, which you will. This is what confuses me about the get up early crowd. I get a lot of shit done between the hours of 11pm and 1am.

Is this meant to be "Waking up early" or "Waking up early than you need to" I get up at 520-530 for work at 6. Though I feel less shitty by getting 6-7 hours of sleep, i don't feel more productive in the morning and in fact feel more productive at work from 8-11.

Coming from someone who never woke up earlier than 11:30 for 5 years to waking up at 7am everyday I will completely vouch. I work everyday at 2 waking up at 7 allows me to prepare my meals for the day, run the park, hit the gym, wash my car/cut the grass, surf the web, etc with time to spare.

It's just something about being awake at sun rise thar gives me the fuel to do all of this in comparison to waking up mid afternoon

It's really true. I've been working / waking up late lately, and waking up at 8am or later I feel like I'm behind the rest of the day. When I woke up really early I'd get my workout done early and be prepared for my day otherwise.

Waking up early is something I highly recommend. I do it, there are many benefits to it but in my situation:

I get up at 5:30, in the gym at 6 and at the office at 7:30. Having already lifted you have you just feel great, blood is flowing and you are physically ready. Also, in comparison to all the zombies showing up at 9-9:30 you are just winning the day right off the bat.

Additionally, being in the earliest in my situation just creates respect in the office. I work in the tech-startup scene and someone who is first in (also last out) has made me the most promoted and overpaid in terms of qualifications and age in our company. I do also make my time count.

Something I do when I am having issues getting up (usually Mondays after a long weekend of being up till 4-5am) is setting two alarms. One 30min before you would like to get up. Put the phone on the other side of the room, with a glass of water and a caffeine pill. Take the pill, drink the water, go back to bed. When the second alarm goes, you have effectively already had your morning coffee and are good to go.

I can't say if that's healthy or the right thing to do, but it works for me. I usually stay up till about 12-1 depending on if I am going out with a chick or have class.

I actually started doing this a couple of months ago. All my life I've been a night owl. I really struggle to get up in the morning. I could easily sleep 10 hours every day. It takes real discipline every morning to get up. I have found no way around this, I just apply discipline.

When I just sleep for as long as I want my days actually become longer than 24 hours. When I was a student I just became completely nocturnal. It was awful. When I have a job I start being late for work and unable to sleep at night.

So I started to wake up at 6:30. At first I was walking for 30-60 minutes every morning. I stopped doing it because I went on holiday and never got back into the routine, plus it's colder now, and dark at 6:30. I should maybe revive this habit, though. Instead I've been getting to work an hour earlier and leaving earlier for the gym (makes more sense with current daylight hours).

I want at least 8 hours sleep because I'm getting stronger and bigger. So I go to sleep at 22:30. When I get up at 6:30 I can actually sleep at that time as well. No more lying awake until past midnight. I really like not rushing to work and actually getting there on time. It feels great to turn up knowing that you've already been awake for 2.5 hours.

I continued to wake up at 6:30 even when I was on holiday. I was travelling alone and staying with friends. I managed to do so much more this time than when I have travelled previously. It's amazing how many hours are in the day if you sleep at the right time.

Overall getting up early has been great for me, great for my gains, and really makes me feel like I have my life under control.

Staying up late and sleeping in late scrambles the circadian rhythm, the body's biological clock that has been programmed for millions of years to sync with sunrise and sunset. It has profound effects on hormones (testosterone), mood, digestion, etc. The night owl lifestyle has only been widespread for 100 years or so... since electric lighting and screens were invented.

For several months I have gone to bed at 10pm every night, 7 nights a week, and wake up around 6. I fall asleep within 5 minutes and have incredibly deep, restful sleep every night. I lift before work and feel great. I do daygame. But there are huge social costs, since 90%+ of people go out late and sleep late. Most events are at night. It's a major social taboo to leave a party early in order to get a good night's sleep. I think the improved health and sleep quality is worth it, overall... and I will continue.

I disagree a bit, sleep should be tailored for you personally. I'd argue that:

1) You should wake up with the sun whenever possible - Don't draw your curtains and let the sun wake you up, it becomes almost impossible to sleep in. Add to this the fact that you get the MAXIMUM amount of daylight hours: its good for your psychology. Coming from a Northern climate, I know a lot of people that get seasonal depression because of the winter darkness: being able to make the most of daylight is valuable.

2) Waking up early i.e 6-8 aligns the most naturally with the human sleep cycle as I understand it.

3) Waking up early allows you to have ample time to have a relaxing schedule before work or school: i have 0 panic about getting anywhere on time because I've already cooked a big meal and read before leaving to anywhere.

4) Similarly to point one, complete darkness does not fall until a few hours after sunset: its fine to stay up for a while, but once "nautical dark" has come its probably time to go to sleep.

5) Also remember not to lights on, listen to music, watch videos, use your phone, or anything. Ideally, you should read or something else very leisurely that has no light or brain stimulation. When your body is in a dim environment it will begin to utilize it's melatonin to begin the sleep cycle.

I dunno I've done both and I prefer to wake up around 8 and go straight to work starting at 9 and gym afterwords. It's not a labour job so I'm not physically exhausted and can easily have good weekend socially.

I would recommend everyone trying it and seeing for a week if it can work for them. But don't force it just because someone tells you.

I wake up at 5am and go to sleep at 9pm.
I start my day with two glasses of water and egg rice, followed by 8 hours of work, then I hit the gym, then I read a book, then I go to sleep.
Repeat.

I need at least 9 hours of sleep at night and about an hour to fall asleep, so waking up earlier than 7 isn't easily feasible. Over the summer I was waking up at 4:30 but went to bed at 6 pm. Would not recommend.

I wake up at 330a/5a during the week. It gets easier and you guys griping about only sleeping 5 hours/night will eventually get it.

I'm admittedly in grad school, but I really don't see the point of staying up late to watch TV, which is also a waste of time and boring to me.

Good words-never considered this except for the morning workout. By 5:00am I'm having coffee and reading the WSJ. Work out, stomach crunches, breakfast and showered by 7. The workout is crucial. You don't have to kill yourself just get the heart pumping for a half hour. I lift 4-6 times a week at night. In bed reading by 9 most nights.

Sure I go out but I try to maintain that schedule. My dad always said: "after midnight is nothing but trouble".

Great post. Feel that this is a bit centered on the "bonus" effects of waking up early. I agree, they are fckin amazing. (woke up at 6 today and biked from my girl in 0 degree weather to start my day earlier).

Thing is, a wiser thing than simply waking up early is to prepare for sleep better.

-- no computer / white screens ---> install lux or other things that make screen more orange/sunset-y

-- heavy curtains in sleeping room for a DARK room. Better sleep

-- if noisy environment, specialized earplugs for sleeping --> poor quality sleep (micro-awakenings) can fck up the regeneration and recharge

-- AVOID Tv, Laptops and Mobile on the bed. Bed is for sleeping. And sex. And sleeping. Nothinging else.

-- Have a book on the nightstand / nearby

It really feels, after various explorations of what's best, that it's mostly about how you make "your bed". Prepare for the night and you'll sleep amazingly.

After we condition our mind enough (neuroplasticty), it (the mind) will know not to fck around and immediately go to sleep because YOU ARE waking up at 5am or 6am. This topic is very important, it's like YING and YANG. Sleep well and the Night will pull the Day. Do your day well, and it will pull the night.

I wake up at 6 am and go to bed around 11pm. It does really maximize my time and I get just enough sleep to be productive. I used to really love sleeping in but now even when I am off from work I am up at 6 am enjoying my Earl Gray and relaxing.

to those struggling, get some caffeine in you. set the timer on your coffee maker and go straight for it when your alarm goes off.

edit: also a huge health benefit to be able to have time to eat breakfast or get something into your stomach takes some time to get it to become habit but it pays off.

This works if you have a 9-5 lifestyle. I don't. I'm a musician and don't get to bed until 2-3 most nights. Nothing that doesn't involve the house on fire or needing to go to the emergency room is getting me up before 9.

Actually, it's only an "obstacle" when you are trying to re-adjust your sleeping patterns. After the adjustment, you don't need an alarm anymore and wake up early naturally.

Waking up at at 5 or 6am is going to provide you with so much more time than the rest of the world.

That isn't true either, if you wake up at 1pm but stay awake until 4am, then you still have the same amount of time as the rest of the world. Some people do prefer the quiet of nighttime to work.

When I'm up at 6/7 I feel like shit the entire day and have little to no energy.

Conversely, when I wake up at 10/11 I feel refreshed and relaxed and almost always have a pretty great day.

You can't really argue that getting less sleep is good for you, especially if you're a tall/big person.

Sorry, good post and all, but this analogy doesn't actually make sense. If we're talking about a cell phone battery, the cell phone doesn't actually run any better when the battery is at 100% than it does at 25%. The 25% just means the phone has less time left before it shuts off.

So if we follow the analogy the accurate way, it just means that getting up earlier means that your battery will run down sooner and you will have to go to bed earlier... which is exactly what happens in real life.

You can certainly argue, though, that many people feel more energized in the early morning hours, so maybe the battery analogy should have just been avoided in the first place.

If you are using an alarm, you are doing it wrong. And if you don't want to wake up, you are doing it wrong, too. If you set up a reasonable schedule, your body will wake up on its own.

Also, I don't care how early you wake up, you'll have the same 24 hours in a day as everyone else. It's not about time management, it's about aligning your sleep as close to natural light as possible, since it's how it's supposed to work.

When I wake up before my alarm goes off and I go back to sleep for let say 30min~1h I wake up worse than anything. When I get out of bed after a natural wake I feel good the rest of the day no matter what time it is.
When I sleep in, I struggle to eventually get out of bed, then the rest of my body seems to shuffle. My digestion is impaired, I'm less hungry and I don't poop (or later in the day).
When I wake up naturally and early, I'm very hungry and go to the toilet within 5 min of getting up.
When I ejaculate I need more sleep, it's more difficult to get out of bed.
After giving Nofap a try I reduced my sleep needs by ~2h. I used to need ~7h, now I'm good with ~5h. And I'm generally less sleepy. I used to be able to fall asleep basically anywhere anytime in 5min, now I need to be in bed.

Your point about working out in the morning is also not a universally good thing.

Some of us do intermittent fasting, so we don't eat anything dinner to dinner. Working out in the morning would mean you'd have to consume calories pre and post workout, or else feel like shit - working out in a fasted state is not a good idea.

Instead one can workout in the evening and consume a moderate amount of calories in the form of protein shakes during and after, and get the benefits of the 16 hour intermittent fasting window with no reduction in workout performance.

Can confirm. I am one of those people that is up until midnight or 1 and wake up as late as possible before going to work (usually around 715, work is at 8 and I only have a 15 min drive to get there).

However I used to be on a far better schedule (for a few months in the summer) but I fell off the wagon. Wake up at 6/615, get dressed, interval jogging for 30 min, shower, off to work. Usually got there a few minutes early, too, unless I took my time or stopped somewhere first.

I have got to get back on that schedule, though winter really is taking the piss out of wanting to jog. But waking up early would still be beneficial. I always felt better (takes me a while to really wake up, mind and body just hate mornings).

Pro tip: don't use an alarm clock.

I haven't used one in several months, and now wake up naturally every day between 5:15-5:45am. It still allows for some flexibility when I go to bed, usually anytime between 9-11pm and I will still wake up within that 5:15-5:45 window.

I almost always wake up refreshed and ready to go, without having that 'alarm going off regret' that I used to have when my body wasn't used to getting up that early. And I'm never tempted to sleep in.

Of course, you have to adjust your body to the new sleep schedule. This will take at least 2 weeks, so those first couple weeks will be rough, but trust me, it's worth the effort.

Some people are actually "wired" so to speak to sleep like 3am-11am (ish). Teenagers are like this, then most people revert back in their early 20's although some do not- those people have a circadian rhythm that differs from most. There are some evolutionary hypotheses as to why this may be the case but suffice it to say it's real and this will NOT work for everyone.

Since April, I've mastered the art of waking up around 6.30 Monday-Friday, going for a 20 min sprint or do Insanity or P90X or T25 and make it to work at 830am. (I live 10 min walk away from work). I've missed maybe 2 mornings in the last 7 months. Now it's just automatic. It's tough but one of the best habits I've formed. No New Years Resolutions needed, you can start anyday.
