One time a guy suggested we play something together. I thought okay, I'll give it a try (didn't know better back then). We're at his place and I see only one controller. He starts the game and talks about it. He plays. I watch. What. The. Fuck. It was so fucking boring. After a while he asked if I'd like to try but I was too annoyed and just wanted to leave. Never again, I'll rather die alone than date a gamer.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it’s a red flag when a guy needs you to be a fan of all his stuff but he huffs and rolls his eyes at anything you like. I encountered this so much while dating, adult (!) men needing their GFs to be into every show/game/song etc.

Maybe it’s because I was a nerd who dated nerds, but I’ve also seen the dudes who need their women to follow their sports and love their Marvel movies too, but they’ll b*tch and moan if she wants to watch a foreign film or drama.

And women will morph into what these men want a lot of times! “Well I never really thought about Tibetan basket-weaving documentaries before, but Andy is such a huge fan and I really learned a lot!” Meanwhile, she’s behind on The Crown because he never wants to watch it.

I always lay out a deal within the first couple dates to see how they respond: you want me to watch important sportsball games with you, I want the same number of hours watching operas together. Then I watch them shrivel into themselves when they realize I’m serious.

I remember seeing somewhere that this is because men have been socialized to view media targeted at women as inferior and it really stuck with me. Because, you know, women are less in their eyes.

Kind of how most movies and games have male protagonists unless it's to cater to their gaze. Men don't know how to relate to women but women learn to relate to men from birth. It perpetuates men's lack of empathy towards women.

When I see posts like these I feel lucky to have a bf who likes to watch women-targeted media with me. Showed him Pride and Prejudice last month and he loved it. We're still talking about it to this day lol Though I've definitely seen how some men are. My mom loves period dramas and my dad makes fun of her for it whenever he can... Meanwhile she's expected to watch all those westerns with him smh

They are Polanski fans but won't watch Tess with me, yet go and watch Once Upon a Time in Hollywood? Wtf? Even though Polanski is a dirtbag as a person, the writer of the book the movie is based on saw through the double standards women face.

Still wouldn’t date a gamer again though. They have a certain type of personality/laziness that just doesn’t sit well with me.

Usually this happened : You take over the game, make him watch. You start getting into the game while he slowly gets bored. You start being better at it and he gets pissed. He either stops playing or tries to beat you. You get turned off by his behaviors and ditch him.

My ex and I are both gamers. Never again. He used to try to “let’s play games together” as a ploy to get me over to his house in order to try to have sex with me.

When that stopped working (because why would I go over to your house to game, when I can stay at mines and not be bothered), he’d attempt to guilt trip me by saying “I jUST wAnTeD tO sEe YoU”

I never watched my ex play videogames, but I listened to him talk about his hobbies, which I wasn't interested in, asked him questions about it to show I was engaged... etc.

But when it came to him listening to anything that he didn't find that interesting? Watching a movie he didn't like so much? Doing something he didn't particularly enjoy but that I did? He literally acted as if it was unbearable. Constant complaining, looking away, asking to do something else. Blamed his ADHD, blamed that what I was saying just wasn't interesting, said that he didn't ask me to listen to him when I found it boring. Ted, it still annoyed you when me or anyone else followed that advice.

But I was a pickme, so I cOmMuNiCaTeD, tried to reach a compromise, accepted that I wouldn't be able to share anything I liked with him because he would huff and puff. Thankfully I found FDS and broke up with him shortly after.

It is good advice that women should stop listening or being interested in what men like. They don't do the same for us anyway. They don't do this so much that other men joke that the man we're seeing is only listening to us because he wants to fuck. The moment he already has that, he won't put effort anymore. By realizing that you don't have to put up with being bored out of your mind, we can find someone who actually excites us.

It's probably because he doesn't have enough brain cells to understand the English they use. These duds can barely speak or write modern english because they spent all their time on videos games and never read a book or spoke to others regularly growing up. I can always spot them.

Years ago I put in my dating profile that I loved watching period dramas. The sheer number of responses I got referencing this was disappointing. Everything from “sounds messy” to “isn’t every period drama for you?”

So if you haven’t given up on OLD yet, this is a good filtration statement.

It's so nice to find a community of women who get this. Dating men, you start to feel like you have all these niche interests. They act like they've never heard of the thing you like or they're doing you this huge favor in engaging with it. When, in fact, it's usually a pretty popular show, movie, pastime/hobby. It's just more popular with women than with men.

I genuinely enjoy watching people play video games that have a story (so not online football or shooters, more like Skyrim or Fallout). I’m lousy at video games but I enjoy the medium as a way to tell a story and I like working out the puzzles etc.

I also really like Pride & Prejudice.

What I don’t like is the weird “manly” culture of dismissing the interests of women while insisting that women be into the same things their boyfriends are (while also insisting they should be GENUINELY into it or else they’re a Fake Gamer Girl....while also insisting that women can’t be into more stereotypical male interests in a genuine way and MUST be faking....it’s all so exhausting). If you like a person, it’s very natural to try to get into the things they like! I would take it as a huge red flag if I were super into historical romance and my potential or current partner was completely unwilling to even make a single attempt at enjoying it as well, and make that two red flags if they expect me to pick up their interests and hobbies without reciprocating.

I love playing typically macho games like shooters or roguelikes (animal crossing too, I'm not as limited as some of my male peers lol), but if a man ever did this to me I'd be seriously pissed off!! We either game together or we don't at all!

This is like me going to a restaurant, ordering for myself and deciding that he'll be fine just watching and cheering me on while I stuff my face.
