I imagine is it because women are supposed to be pleasant, agreeable, approachable, and nice in order to make other people happy, comfortable, relaxed.

The reason they say it is because women, hell most humans, but especially women, look more attractive when they are smiling. Having said that though, it's still obnoxious, annoying, and rude to tell someone what to do while they are in public minding their own business. It's just basic courtesy.

It is culturally based. In some parts of the world, smiling at strangers is inappropriate, and if you go round smiling at everyone, they think you're a simpleton, lacking social graces or assume you must be a foreigner.

Presumably then, you're in part of the world where people are expected to smile in public if multiple people are telling you to smile more.

There is also this phenomenon in some parts of the West where men seem to feel entitled to an attractive young woman or girl's smile, but I think the top comment covered that.

It's an intro/pick up line that predominantly black/hispanic men use. Some dude probably had success with it in the 90s and now it's spread across the internet.

Also women in the internet love to complain-brag about how much unwanted attention they get from men. So you gotta also consider how often women are actually being told to smile vs how much they bandwagon it online.

Smiling releases endorphins, when we smile it subconsciously causes other people to smile which makes them associate us with good feelings and want to be near us more. Studies have shown that any kind of smile greatly improves judgments of attractiveness, generosity, health, and agreeableness in both men and women.

As to why some people think it’s a good idea to tell women to smile I’m not too sure. If I had to guess I’d say it’s people with poor social skills thinking they are giving good advice on how to make women appear more attractive and likeable, when really they are just making them self conscious and less likely to smile.

Imo smiling more is great advice, everyone should do it because it makes us happier and makes it easier to make connections with people around us. Instead of telling people to smile just smile more because it’s infectious!

I don´t know. I find it rude though. No, it´s not rape or oppression but it is rude to go up to a stranger and demand they do anything, whether that´s smiling, giving you the time of day, farting on command lol.
