I am not divorced but very close to walking down to the courthouse and and getting papers signed because I can’t take my wife’s laziness anymore. Always has an excuse especially when she was pregnant “I’m carrying your child so I get tired”. All of us get tired! Don’t you think I’m tired after work chasing around our daughter, give her a bath, feed her, put her to sleep, and fold laundry while you sit your butt on the couch on your phone… we have a spare bedroom with baby clothes stacked to the ceiling and she never puts anything away after I fold. Feel like I’m constantly working against the grain and in a marriage you should be working together. Not against each other

My ex was terrible at housekeeping, when we first me we went to her place, it was a sick a mess that I ended up cleaning up a bit, after we got married she was a sahm, but still wouldn't do anything but playing on the computer or sleep, my oldest stepson would have to make lunch for his siblings when they were in school vacation or the weekends, every apartment we had, got infested with bugs because of it, I had to do the cleaning, cooking, laundry, pay the bills, grocery shopping, etc, the woman wouldn't get a driver's license, I was married to a complete lazy slob who couldn't even take care of herself, which is why I fought so hard for custody. We divorced after 19 years together , i don't keep a spotless home but it was a huge improvement over what the kids and I had while we were together

Yes. My ex is the type of person to buy and place fruitfly traps instead of doing the dishes and taking out the garbage regularly. (Bags will sit inside for a few days). She has a monthly cycle where she lets her place get to the absolute brink of hell, and only then does she pick up and clean. Granted she does a good job when she does, but it goes to hell fast and she never follows through with upkeep.

Yup my ex was a slob. Didn't rear it's head till we got married. I work weeks at a time away and would come home to the same dishes she left in the sink 2 weeks prior and her clothes everywhere on the floor and she would let the dogs shit in the house and not clean it.

Mine was that way and it drove me nuts. She would just come home and throw stuff everywhere. I ended up having to do all the cleaning, outdoor yardwork, and cooking. Now that I have my own house, it stays clean ALL the time. I can't tell you the amount of peace I get coming home to a clean house. If someone comes over, there is never that last minute freak out and cleaning. I've also taught my kids to clean up after playing, so even their rooms are clean.

This might be a strange take away, but I am glad I am not the only one. I hired people to clean after her for years because I didn't want the kids to live in trash hole. She wasn't like "dirty" but she just couldn't throw things away and kept and kept buying new junk. So the house was just filled with clutter. It weighs on you having it everywhere.

OMG yes absolutely. Not only was the house an utter shithole at all times, I was never allowed to clean anything up or I was saying she "was a bad wife." I would literally get cleaning supplies yanked out of my hands and have her stand between me and whatever I was cleaning to make me stop. Whereupon she would go right back to the couch. So glad that bullshit is over. My place looks awesome now, never going back to that crap.

One thing I’ve learned from experience is that if she is messy as a single woman, getting married won’t change her at all, in fact usually they get worse because they know a decent man will eventually clean up the living area.

Yes. She was a boarder line hoarder and a disgusting slob. I kept a lid on the worst of it because I had to keep the house clean for the kid’s health when they were young. Her house now is filthy, cobwebs everywhere, dried up food on the floors and looks like it hasn’t been cleaned and dusted for years. I’m not a saint in term of cleaning but there is a limit I won’t go beyond, she never had this limit and seems to be happy living in filth.

Yes. Lazy and narcissistic is a hell of a combo. I’m home on the weekends due to work. At one point the dishes in the sink sat there for 3 weekends (basically a month) before I finally broke down and cleaned about half of them while not getting any sleep on a Sunday night before having to leave for the airport at 2:30 am. She is/was physically/mentally incapable of filling up the Brita jug on Friday nights when I would come home super late so there would be no cold water to put in my water bottle but I get shit if I don’t fill it up after using it.

Yes, and it was a 5000 sq ft gorgeous estate home. When we were getting divorced, I walked a real estate agent through the home. I had already moved out months earlier. We opened up the master bedroom door and there on the floor were a bra and panties with a large visible shit stain on them. She was a pig.

I have no idea how she keeps her apartment post divorce. I got organized, got rid of tons of stuff, and keep things pretty simple. I kind of turned into a neat freak honestly. It takes a weight off. And it's easy. Like you said, no more embarrassment.

My ex was/is a slob. Our house had shit everywhere. Every horizontal surface had to have something on it. Behind our couch was her "I'll put it here and forget about it, then later claim anxiety as a reason not to pick up after myself" spot. After I left she got worse, I can't go in there anymore but can see thru the window when dropping stuff off and there's piles of junk stacked up everywhere. My place has 5 pieces of furniture in the living room, I keep 1 couch pillow and the only thing allowed on the coffee table is my feet or the TV remotes.

I’m guilty of being a little slobby myself

Trying to turn over a new leaf now that I’m living on my own (Obviously if I ever get a woman back here I’d like to have a somewhat clean space)

Planning to have a cleaning service once a month and just make more effort to keep it clean

Vision not great and I never seem to get things really clean.

Huge slob and hoarder! After I kicked her out, she lived with her parents for about a month. I probably tossed a DOZEN trash bags of waste paper, empty makeup containers, apparel boxes, you name it. Then found dozens more boxes of just junk that she kept for years in the attic.

Just like you, I knew she was a slob when we were dating. 20 years married and now going through divorce. After we got married, she didn't change and neither did I. This is something people need to realize. People don't change! She has left her dirty underwear on the living room floor more than a few times. I would literally clean the house before her parents came to visit. Now I'm living in an apartment by myself, no clutter, no mess. One of the reasons my oldest daughter decided she wanted to live with me was how clean my apartment is kept.

She was a bit of a pack-rat, not as bad as a hoarder. At least, nothing like the cable TV show Hoarders. It grew little-by-little, so I didn't notice it at first.

Years later, I was watching some old home movies shot with a video camera. And Wow!, I was shocked to see our bedroom. Piles of magazines, unopened mail, assorted junk, Amazon boxes, all stacked up on all horizontal spaces. Any open horizontal space (desktop, table top, top of a dresser, floors along the wall, top of ANYTHING) had piles of shit. So many Amazon boxes. God knows what was in them.

I didn't "see" it until I was disconnected for a few years, then got a glimpse back at it.

It was an organized mess; e.g.: neatly put into stacks, but still, a micro landfill in every fucking room. And God help you if you actually needed something (like specific paperwork) and had to go searching for it.

EDIT: She had a little bit of 'hoarder' in her. When I cleaned, I was pretty aggressive about throwing away useless junk. I ended up cleaning in secret. Think of the TV show 'Hoarders' where the person doesn't want to throw away ANYTHING. They come up with an excuse to save everything. I would clean in secret; 95% of the time, she wouldn't notice. But I'd get tantrums on the other 5% when I threw away something she was "working on". Yeah, whatever.
