So,

I’m 33. Divorce is not final yet. I make about 50k a year in a relatively “affordable” area of the country. (Not shit In today’s money. A touch above minimum wage in some states)

My stbxw is a sahm; and I’m about to be straight up destroyed with child support and alimony. I know this is just par for the course, but I obviously don’t like it one bit. Besides seeing my kids way less overall; I’m going to be shelling out about 40% of my income (NY) that I used to pay for the life we all had before she decided to quit.

I can’t currently imagine surviving or building a new life with about ~30k left a year from my gross pay. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna have to move back in with Mom and Dad for the foreseeable future. I was already struggling to keep it together before this.

Definitely not what I had imagined. Definitely do not like. Not one bit.

I’m uneducated. I graduated from high school and I dabbled in college a couple times. My first foray into college was for computer programming - which I honestly did well at, but I could not imagine myself doing as an occupation rather than a hobby (I used to make dumb little games with DarkBasic back in the day) - so I quit that when I was like 19.

My second foray into college was probably half a decade later - and it was for mechanical engineering. I didn’t last long enough to get into classes I’d actually find interesting. And I hate math. Maybe not a good fit. But I love making things and building stuff; I was pretty good at mechanical drawing.

While I am finding positivity in therapy, working on myself, and lifting weights… my career absolutely blows and I don’t even know where to start. (To add insult to injury; my lack of wealth was one of her many reasons for leaving me)

I’m literally a jack of all trades by trade but I’m getting pretty sick of it. (Let’s be honest - I was sick of it way before the mess I find myself in now)

I’m not paid what I’m worth at my day job AND I loathe the idea of side work (been there, done that - I don’t want 80 hour weeks anymore…) but I have no education worth the paper it’s printed on.

And because I was an idiot in my early 20’s; when my kids came in my late 20’s I just put my chin down and soldiered on. I regret everything.

How the hell do I figure out what to do now? Getting an education feels important to me; but how do I choose where to begin?

Any and all advice is welcome. I very well may be another whiny millennial; but I could never figure out where to start. And I find the looming divorce to be paralyzing… but I do not want it to define me.
