I tried my best to equitably split up the work. If she was cleaning I was cleaning, I did anything she asked and took the initiative to clean on my own where it seemed needed.
We scheduled childcare responsibilities pretty effectively, but household stuff she was pretty obstinate about "just clean it up of you see it" and refused to make a schedule or even look at what chores I kept a record of having done. She would complain I wasn't doing enough and when I would rattle off a list of things I'd done in the last few days she would say "but you're not consistent". I pointed out that every time we had this conversation I could list things I had done so that seems like I'm consistent. She said "stop playing mind games"
After I found out about the affair she admitted to some extremely toxic related behavior. Rather than tell me about a mess she expected me to clean up, she would wait and see if I did it. If I didn't do it, then she would do it herself. This was given as explanation for why she had an affair
Her behavior strikes me as exactly how to build resentment in a relationship and not fix the problem. It's also a crap explanation for her infidelity and what she did nothing to fix her perceived problem.
I basically think 4 things are true based on my own personal experience and some statistics I'll list below.
A) women on average do more chores than men. This isn't fair to women in most circumstances (exceptions for part time work or SAHM's)
B) it's hard to figure out to what extent there is inequity in housework and most people want to go off gut feelings/perceptions rather than record keeping or scheduling
C) everyone is much quicker to embrace the stereotype of the "slob husband" than anything else. No one considers that the wife has too high expectations or that the partnership is failing to address the problem in a healthy way.
D) women who believe they are doing a disproportionate amount of the housework very often have awful responses that work against their relationships rather than fix the problem
Relevant statistics:
https://sitn.hms.harvard.edu/flash/2019/dirtiness-perceived-cleanliness-sustained-women-study-reveals/
Men perceive messes as frequently as women but average clean 10 min a day relative to women's 40 min

Oddly enough, the more housework a man does the more likely the relationship ends in divorce.

Bizarrely enough, men are happier when they have an equal split of household chores. I'm not entirely sure I have a great explanation how these last two statements are both true.
The most optimistic idea I have is that conservative ideas about gender roles and marriage correlate. Chore inequality just doesn't override concepts the negative perception of divorce. Meanwhile progressive ideas correspond with higher acceptance of divorce and while the progressive husband is doing more chores, the wife is more likely to divorce on some other grounds as women initiate divorce in 70% of cases. All pretty speculative though.
What do you guys think? Were chores a big issue in your house too?
