As society has really confronted a lot of its bullshit over the last few years, its really changed the way I see so many of the films I grew up with and loved.

I have a 3-year-old niece. We were watching some movies. I realized that so many children's movies, especially Disney, basically indoctrinate women into loving men for who they really are, warts and all. There is no parallel for that for men.

On the contrary, the movies with male protagonists generally fall in love with a woman at first sight, reinforcing that physical attractiveness is the basis of love for men.

Beauty and the beast - she loves him even though he's not the same species (QUESTIONABLE) but because, beneath his shitty behavior and terrifying appearance, he has a good heart. awww, how sweet

WTF is this? When will there be a movie where Channing Tatum falls for a disfigured woman because of her character? When was a man saved from his miserable life thanks to meeting an empowered woman?

And even going along with this 'love-him-for-who-he-is' narrative - why is the woman always exceptionally beautiful? If the story is really about genuine love, why is the woman always so much more attractive ? cant an average looking girl see the good in a man too?

not to mention that women are the enemy of women. cinderllas life was made miserable by her mother and sisters. its actually STRANGE that her father wasn't there. we wouldnt want any implication that a man could also make her miserable. after all, a man is the only chance she has for a happy life. that would confuse the narrative of man = salvation

I think right now, we're seeing much better stories come out. There's a bit of a renaissance going on with this but god damn! How much of this love-a-man-for-who-he-really-is shit are they going to stuff down our throat while at the same time, pumping out male leads who plow through beautiful women decades younger than them?
