I briefly dated a man who was into BDSM. BDSM has never been my thing. Years prior I took a kink test assuming I was kinky and I was the most vanilla person at all (I guess delighting your partner with whip cream and roleplaying isn't sufficient). Since I have a high pain threshold except for my head & core, it didn't bother me at first.

I regarded BDSM to be his hobby, but as it turns out, he was into as a lifestyle and culture. After a short while, I found it to be boring and tedious. While he was good at foreplay, it was pretty perfunctory and emotionless, just an entre to using a gadget on me. Going back to the whole "lifestyle and culture" nonsense, BDSMers are trying to become part of the LGBTQK(kink) rubric and that offends me. Kink is something a person does, not is. Plus, there's not a lot of evidence that early humans were particularly kinky. Maybe this is because they were too busy surviving. BDSM culture and lifestyle is truly for the privileged, not the marginalized.

The BDSM nor break up didn't bring me to FDS. The fact that he mentioned traveling to SE Asia some day did raised a red flag since many white males go there to rape children. FDS is the only site addressing that. I was pro-BDSM at the time even though it wasn't my cup of tea.

I've learned a lot from FDS and changed my opinion about BDSM really quickly when FDS gurus explained how the culture of placating men makes the notion of consent very treacherous. I realized that had he not broken up with me, I might've had some extremely nasty stuff tried on me. He did me a favor.

Unless a BDSMer has a very specific fetish that he/she has to repeat (hopefully a minor one), they usually have to escalate. For women, usually the subs, the need to placate is high. Their canard is that the sub has the power. If so, why is the sub tied up and have to ask to stop? Not particularly powerful.

Anyhoo, Vanilla sex is pretty exciting to me. From the increase in attraction and lust, to the culmination and afterglow after a good lovemaking session feels amazing.
