Hey y’all, haven’t posted in a while because I (F25) found myself in a stable long term relationship (M28) of almost a year now. I’m posting because recently I’ve felt some discontent with my bf, and I wanted to get you ladies’ thoughts because honestly I’m having a hard time telling if my expectations are too high/unrealistic or maybe we're just not compatible/he's a LVM. This is my first adult relationship so I’m also inexperienced.
Mind you I’m about to list all the things I’m unhappy about so obviously this will be biased. In general I will say I feel safe and secure with him. He’s a solid, highly empathetic, sweet-natured, hilarious guy that my family and friends all like. He’s also been a good “mirror” for me in that I’ve never had a guy with the emotional awareness to give me good constructive feedback on my own shortcomings when it comes to relationships which I highly appreciate (usually I’m the one giving the feedback). I guess these are some of the reasons I’ve stayed with him (and we love each other).
Things I’ve sometimes felt discontent about:
-
Sex/intimacy - started out amazing - he’s cared the most about my pleasure and orgasm out of any guy I’ve been with. But sometimes not being able to get me off without the use of additional aids like a toy bruises his ego (despite repeated reassurance) in a way that is not attractive to me. He also has a lower libido than I’m used to in a guy. I have a high libido and have felt repeatedly rejected by him, a foreign and thus hurtful experience for me (tbf I’m also more used to shorter flings so maybe this is what happens in a long term relationship?). We now have sex about once a week and it’s still amazing when we do but my ideal is 3+/week. It just stings because I feel like I still feel really attracted to him and constantly want him but it appears he doesn't feel the same way.
-
Being a grown man. May be harsh but there are instances I feel he is still a bit immature (though I don’t claim to be wise beyond my years). He works a busy demanding job and struggles with time management. He prioritizes his job a lot and sometimes neglects life things like health/nutrition/cleaning/fitness (he says he wants to get in better shape but hasn’t done much to get there). I’m in the same field as my bf and somehow manage to balance everything (though to me work is just work, not life, so maybe this just comes with being with ambitious men, who naturally suck at multitasking?). I'm also used to dating really fit guys who valued health/nutrition a lot and in general seemed to have more of their shit together (moreso than me even). I guess sometimes I see myself fast-forwarding up to a decade, and if we got married, I don't want to be the wife that has to take care of her husband who as diabetes/hypertension/heart attacks/fatty liver, among other lifestyle things (I know that sounds harsh but I come from a family that's used to living a health lifestyle and I know personally I would not want to be a burden on my kids/husband if I could avoid it). To be fair, I also haven't brought this up to him because I know that he's already aware and me nagging him about isn't going to suddenly motivate him to make real changes.
Semi-related to the above point: There was also a time when I was upset and on the verge of ending things but because he felt stressed about work, he said he didn't want to spend any time on talking about it until he was done with his work presentation (at the time still more than 5 days away). I felt kind of un-prioritized and neglected at this point. I didn't know how to act normal and continue on with the relationship. He accused me of not being able to "de-escalate." He said that we should feel secure/stable enough to push conflicts aside temporarily and still feel solid in the relationship. I understood what he was saying and agreed that this was not my strongsuit, but at the same time, I feel like if the situation was reversed, I'd have prioritized the relationship enough to take an hour break from work or whatever and resolve the relationship issue at hand. He's not the same way.
- Complacency/comfort in a long-term relationship. Sort of related to the above three points, but sometimes I feel like he's gotten really comfortable and almost complacent with the relationship, where it seems like he feels he no longer has to put extra effort. Because he now has me, he can put his focus on other areas of his life worry-free. I understand to some degree that this is what happens in long-term relationships and is actually an advantage to being in one (having stable support so that you can both excel in life together). However, I miss the fireworks of the beginning. I miss surprises and adventures. I am not sure if I'm just being naive and inexperienced.
IDK guys - I know he probably has some LV qualities but he also has many high-value qualities. His individual LV qualities are not QUITE dealbreakers for me (i.e. I can deal with once a week sex as long as it's regular, I'm ok with not having a bf with six packs, and I'm ok with growing together in terms of our maturity and learning how to adult). However, the combination of having multiple things that I'm not exactly THRILLED with have sometimes made me wonder what else is out there (which I'm sure is normal). I'm also a potentially moving in less than a year for career reasons, and I haven't decided whether I'd want to continue with this relationship possibly long-distance with the ultimate goal of marriage, or if I want to end it at that point to look for someone more compatible. My friends all love him and say "it's hard to find a decent guy." TBH so do my parents lol. Guess I just want yall's opinions on things!<3
