If my history is correct, in some ancient cultures both men and women wore some form of make up, eye liner etc. It wasn't until Roman times when make up was used to mimic the look of sexual arousal in women. Think blush and lip stick. The make worn was mainly worn by PROSTITUTES to show potential clients how youthful and sexually desirable they were . Again, men never asked for this, it was women monitizing their sexuality. I guess some things never change.

Yeah I've had an ex-GF complain to me that she had to spend time and money to look good just for me despite the fact that I don't actually like make-up, lipstick and fingernail polish. She would even complain about the cost of waxing down below, saying she'd done it for me (I never asked her to), however I reminded her that she used to do all these things long before she met me and if she didn't want to do it any more then it was fine by me. Personally I don't like hairy legs on women but it's her body and her choice.

None of it was for my benefit but for her own, she liked how she looked with all these changes - I was indifferent.

A couple of years ago I attended a friend's wedding and met a nice young woman in her mid 20s. She was elegantly dressed in 1940s attire, so I commented on it and got chatting to her.

She divulged to me that she had worked out that women don't dress for men, they dress to compete with other women, and it was always men who complimented her and women that shamed her for wearing 1940s clothing.

She was ahead of her age in that realization. Most young women do not understand this. And as the video in the link shows, the woman blaming men for her wearing makeup falters in her thought process because she instinctively knows it isn't true, as does her blonde friend who just lets her rant.

Can you imagine Zach Efron promoting female hygiene products, or underwear. Imagine him telling the female in the commercial having her clam smell like a rose would make her datable. No that would probably only be used on SNL, but we have women advertising men's underwear, men's soap, men's supplements, stuff that is for legitimate companies. I do enjoy humour in commercials but it needs to be universal. If Thor was named White Lightning just so that only a white man could play him would that sit well in today's society?

I can only speak anecdotally, but I've never heard any man state that they wouldn't date a woman if she didn't wear makeup.

In fact, I've heard the reverse. Men (myself included), will see a woman wearing so much makeup that it's difficult to see what the woman actually looks like underneath, and be wary of approaching because they don't know if she's hiding something.

I've dated a few women I have told do not need to wear makeup for me as I think they are attractive without it, and they just continued to spend up to an hour putting it on, regardless.

I simply cannot agree that women wear makeup just for men or because men told them to.

I love when you try and say you like them better without the make up and then you get a response like "no you don't, men don't know how women look like without make-up. We have a 'no make-up' look that we put on because if we don't, men ask if we're sick because we look pale" etc. etc.

Like, girl, are you dumb? I'm pretty sure most of us have at least grown up with moms, and any of us that have actually had relationships where we've lived with women know what they look like sans make-up because you're not wearing it in your sleep or after a shower.

Yep, this is just another issue they're hypocrites about. They love to complain how much they have to spend, how long it takes them, etc. and blame it on the patriarchy and how 'male privilege' is not having to wear makeup. But the second you go to point out it's not men asking them to wear makeup, most men prefer them without it, etc. they screech 'WE DON'T WEAR IT FOR YOU!!!' almost like the whole complaining thing is just a gacha. It's also become a meme with them that men can't even tell when they're wearing makeup. It's such a deep embedded philosophy for them that even when they insist it's not for men's benefit, they refuse to accept that a man could find them more attractive without it and that if we say so we must have somehow never seen a woman without makeup before.

I have nothing against (non animal tested) cosmetics, but I prefer a woman with no cosmetics at all. According to Allan Pease book, only 5% or so of men actually likes women wearing make up. Other 10% don´t care, and the rest dislikes make up. I belong to the majority: I have no fondness for a woman wearing make up.

Women do use makeup to compete with other women, partially that competition is over men. That being said, I do like when a woman looks nice for me and takes the effort to put makeup on.

On the other hand, if it weren't just a gendered thing, I would probably use makeup as well, and lady I do NOT take just 5 minutes getting ready for a date.

I decided I didn't and that's also okay. It's weighing on my face and every time I rub my eyes (what I do a lot) I look like a wet raccoon and that's just not worth it. And who am I fooling? It's not like people are born with glittery eyelids and eyeliner. The only downside about it is when I'm tired....I really look tired.

Something like this happened to me with some dumb questions and I straight up told her, I don't like her with or without make up and if she don't leave me alone, I will press 5 charges against her and one for harrasing and showed her the survillance cameras above our heads. She immediately left the scene with her friends without a word.

Mentally I will break down a person’s appearance(makeup, weave, etc.) to view someone objectively vs a salivating dog.

It’s a weird conundrum when there’s a huge difference between a person’s face with/without it. Ultimately yes, it is silly to blame men, ESPECIALLY when so many women say “I wear it for meeeee.”

I find this so strange, it's like just trying to avoid saying you're self conscious. That's really all it is. Makeup can make you look better, it is what it is. It's like this "men make us do it" response is to save face, but for something really petty like just saying "I want to look good, and I can wear makeup". it does a little. the nicer you look the more you get hit on but neither crowd makes a healthy relationship. infact most men i know say they dont care about womens makeup and that its about making her happy. from what i observe its more of a status thing with women like strength is for men. the ppl that point out makeup issues or suggestions is women to other women. if your looking for a hookup and annoyed your friend with all the makeup is getting all attention. ask a guy out. it happens so rarely unless your prince charming that we will most likely say yes just because it makes us feel wanted

I know few womans who don't use it, so yeah, its more like a personal choice. Also they look pretty good without it, but they were never using it and I suspect that's important (not only because make up fucks your skin, but also because I've never seen "better" versions of them).

I suppose you might be kinda forced to wear it in certain jobs, but no one is forcing you to pick these jobs either, they will find someone happy to wear it, people do far worse things for jobs.

My thing is...

Let's presume I do wear make-up for men; that has nothing to do with men, and everything to do with me, and my self-esteem and self-confidence.

If I think I have to wear a bunch of make-up, and super hot clothes to attract a male, I'm essentially saying that I have nothing to offer a male except for artificially enhanced looks, or that I have no desire for a male who wants me for anything but artificially enhanced looks.

I'm not saying make-up is a bad thing; hell, I use foundation pretty regularly to hide some minor facial scarring, and I love eyeshadow. However, I don't have to 'put on my face' before I leave the house; if I don't have it, so be it. Because I wear my make-up for me. Not for my boyfriend, not for random dudes I see on the street.

Obviously some dudes will only date girls who do the full face paint look. Some dudes want the natural look. Some dudes want the middle-ground. But guess what? Unless they're YOUR dude, it shouldn't matter what some random ass dude that you don't know wants you to look like.

It boils down to many women's lack of self-esteem, and the need to hide behind ten gallons of face paint so that some random dude walking down the street will think they're pretty for the 4.3 seconds they see them.

My mother told me as a teenager that women wear make up, starve themselves and spend stupid amounts of money on clothing and surgery to compete with other women, that’s it, not about men, or at least it’s a very small percentage about men. I have found that most men don’t really care if you don’t plaster make up all over yourself or wear a six 4, but other women do a lot of the time. To actually blame men for make up, like you’re pointing a gun to our heads is insane.

Uh… that video sounds like a lot of insecurity talking. It’s basically an open admission that “I don’t feel I’d be wanted if I didn’t look perfect” and I feel embarrassed for her.

It speaks to an immature way of thinking for me, especially when it comes to relationships, what she expects people to value, and how she values herself.

I look my best for me, friend. If and when I wear make up for a date, it’s more because I feel pretty doing so and I enjoyed dressing up. No one else is to blame - it’s my money, my decision, and I do it according to my taste.

This is why I’ve never really subscribed to dating around as a way of “finding” my person. It’s like a job interview - no one is going to fully be themselves since there’s this need to impress and give a good impression. It just feels disingenuous.
