I’ve seen several posts and comments about women having “high standards” and men complaining that this isn’t fair because “average” men don’t have a chance to meet these “unrealistic” standards.

Nothing about that narrative makes any sense.

Every single person, when making a choice wants to maximize their outcome. They want to best for themselves.

They might wait for a sale for a cheaper car or laptop. They might walk a few extra blocks to a better store. They might even work a few extra hours for a promotion. Or, when unhappy with a job, switch the job!

It seems to me it’s in the nature of all people to want better for themselves.

So why should women settle? That makes zero sense. If anything, women and men shouldn’t settle. So we end up working towards being the best version of ourselves.

Without invoking tradition (which is just the preferences of dead people) or putting words in women’s mouths. Why should any woman settle? Why would I settle when I’m prepared to do the work to find something great? Also, don’t I have the right to have high standards and fail? Isn’t that what being human is all about?

No one has a right to my experiences or preferences. So how is even the critique of women having high standards even a problem? If you can’t meet those standards, too bad.

Life is full of opportunities that don’t belong to you because you’re not good enough to pursue them. Why is dating special in this regard?
