Better alternative: find people who are fun and also able to treat you with empathy and dignity and have fun with them instead.

I had that attitude with a woman I thought was very beautiful and had a long term relationship with. We were electric together, always having fun. She could be an absolute joy to be around. Her passion was the greatest and we would go on many times for over hour. In my mind, I thought she would change because I thought what we had was so special, she never did.

For whatever reason she never saw me as the one, and disrespected me all the time, didn’t care about my feelings, and I got my heart broke. I could never understand it because she seemed to adore me so much, she wanted to be around me constantly. When she turned her back she suddenly didn’t. You can’t take someone who’s not respectful towards you seriously.

When I adopt a dog, I expect a dog level of respect and empathy. Dogs are smart and social creatures, and they know when you’re down. The main difference with dating a person is that if my dog misbehaves, I’m still responsible for it. If my partner starts mistreating me, I can talk to them about it, but if they don’t change their ways, I’m leaving. Their dealbreaking flaws aren’t my responsibility to correct or tolerate.

From a person I expect a human level of empathy, dignity, respect, love etc. Sure, some people might enjoy seeing each other casually with no strings attached, but even in this context they expect a certain level of respect and care. I.e. don’t be flaky, don’t pass them an STD etc. This format isn’t for me though, as I see no fun in having sex outside of committed monogamous relationship. In this relationship I give much more than just “fun time” and I want it to be reciprocated. Otherwise, it isn’t really “fun” for me to be with this person.

How is it any fun to have a partner who doesn’t give you respect, empathy, or dignity? I’ve had friends like that who I kept around for entertainment value, and guess what, it turned very not fun very quickly. People like that will just drain you and make you miserable, even if you’re aren’t in a relationship with them.

A dog doesn’t even understand those concepts, and instinctively bonds with their “pack” if treated well. A human does understand, and also understands how to take advantage of those they don’t respect or care about even if treated well. Horrible analogy.

Well I have friends and family (and I also think that apply to pets) who are not her uniquely for "fun". I do agree we need to preserve our inner child but we are also human and need deeper connection to be better

So yes, have fun but not only fun (you will miss something)

Despite what a lot of the other commenters are saying I actually agree with this. I'm 37 and have never been in a relationship before so I wouldn't want to leave and jeopardize the first one I've been in over things like a lack of respect and dignity. Instead of fun though I would work on finding ways to fix the relationship.
