I think there’s this weird warping of what people assume to be normal. The average women who wears makeup is not doing Instagram contouring, intense drag queen makeup that changes features or any of that.

Most normal, average women wear enough makeup to still look the same but just a bit better. When I say a bit, you can see what they really look like even with the makeup on. There’s no trickery that someone who Isn’t a professional make up artist can do to make a less that beautiful woman look stunning.

You’re also downplaying what it actually takes to create a completely different face with makeup. the level of skill it would realistically take for “most” women to fool you into thinking they looked 100x better is hard to master and takes more practice (and money) than most women arent willing to put in.

Makeup in terms of how men say it affects a woman's dating prospects is basically the male equivalent of how women say a man's looks or income aren't that important over his personality, but their behaviour says the opposite. Most men will say that they prefer a woman with little to no makeup who is "confident in her own skin" and not "frauding her looks" only to later select a woman who they know is wearing a ton of makeup to cover up whatever imperfections she may have, unless the makeup-free girl is model-quality beautiful. The only exception to this might be if a man feels he has no chance with the girl wearing makeup and is bound to be rejected, in which case he might choose the "natural" girl, but this is only a reflection of the fact he considers the first girl to be out of his league and an affirmation rather than rejection of the fact that makeup generally increases, rather than decreases, a woman's value in men's eyes.

I’ll add that makeup can do a lot of harm to skin. People who had bad acne as a kid and now have “crater face” might want to look into chemical peels. I’ve also heard that microdermabrasion is supposed to be good for wrinkles maybe.

As I said in another comment recently, I genuinely do prefer little or no makeup.

I see what makeup is supposed to do, and I see how we're all conditioned to believe it's the way women are supposed to look. Yeah, sometimes it does make women look a little extra special, but it's not them, is it? It's a painting of someone else that they're wearing on their face. It's literally designed to hide natural imperfections (or things we consider to be imperfections) and to accentuate/simulate sexual features and reactions, such blusher and lipstick causing a woman to look flushed. That's not what women normally look like, we've designed that into our standards of beauty, we've engineered the baseline to be "women must look immaculate and perpetually turned on".

I don't think we should make that the baseline for attractiveness, it's not normal (or, rather, it shouldn't be normal) and I refuse to take the blame for "forcing" women to spend tons of time and money on perfect makeup when it's quite likely more for their benefit than mine.

I said in the aforementioned comment that I understand it might make them feel more confident about their looks, make them feel more comfortable presenting themselves that way on a date or something, which is fine, do whatever makes you feel good, but that's different from "men expect it".

Putting effort into skincare/grooming makes just as much of a difference as makeup.

As someone who has never been a fan of makeup my routine includes

-cleansing twice daily -moisturize twice daily -cover the stupid zit that always appears right around my period with a pimple patch so it's less noticeable and heals faster -exfoliate weekly -get eyebrows waxed every month or so -use an eyebrow brush if they look unruly when I wake up -curl my lashes -drink water -eat veggies

A lot of people actually think I'm wearing makeup when I am not in fact doing so because of the above and I'm pretty sure that's the case for many women. No black magic fuckery necessary.

The demand for women has always been high, make up didn’t come along and now men are looking at women for the first time thinking “gosh! Look at that” Make up and the media has now just shown more people what they can do to improve themselves with a few brush strokes, Even men are doing make-up in a more masculine way to highlight their features now too and it’s not going to suddenly increase the demand for men, it’s just gonna help more men feel better about themselves

Oh please. I’ve been hit on plenty wearing baggy sweats and a T-shirt, no makeup, buying fucking tampons. I’ve been hit on running errands in yoga pants and a big ass hoodie, no makeup and RBF. I’ve been hit on plenty with makeup and plenty without it. I’ve long since learned men will hit on almost anyone or anything. Regardless of what they’re wearing.

Makeup makes women look how they'd look on a really good day, in good lighting. As in, clear skin and features standing out a bit more. They look the same, and often people don't even notice if someone stops or starts wearing makeup. You can't work miracles without either really difficult and expensive makeup, or the kind that works just in pictures and looks terrible in real life.

To each their own. Personally, I don’t wear makeup, except for when I star in musical theatre productions. Sometimes I’ll wear makeup for Halloween too. Truth be told, I never learned how to put on makeup myself. I have dark, thick eyebrows so I don’t have to fill them in like most people. Fortunately, I don’t get a unibrow either. My mom uses castor oil to thicken her light eyebrows (that she dyes). I’m curious about using castor oil on my eyebrows to see just how thick they could get (as a little experiment). Furthermore, I have long, dark eyelashes. My eyelids are shiny so many people think I’m wearing eyeshadow even though I’m not. I got lots of compliments about this in elementary school. I have to admit that I have rosy cheeks too. It would make ZERO sense for me to wear blush. Teachers would always say I looked like I came in from the cold after recesses. I’m adamant about not covering the little bit of freckles I have on my cheeks and nose. I love freckles.

I think I might experiment with my hair. I’ve never dyed my hair. It curls into ringlets when it dries, but goes big and floofy the day after when I brush it. Instead of straightening my hair like a lot of people would, perhaps I should look towards older curly hairstyles. So I think hair would be a better thing to look at for me.

I also want to start sewing so there’s that. Fashion can be fun.

I also love jewelry. Jewelry just seems so magical.

There are certain objective facts about skin for example that disadvantage women over men. For example, men universally have thicker, denser, and better skin naturally: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6116811/

The study you cited does state that men have denser skin overall, and thicker skin in some places on their faces, but it doesn't make any claims regarding "better" skin for either sex. Most of the traits listed say that they decrease with age to varying degrees, mostly based on hormonal factors, which is obvious. The authors show that regarding skin on the face, women and men have slight differences like where they lose elasticity and thickness first, or how likely it is for wrinkles to appear on one part of the face vs another. There's no conclusion stating that men have an advantage over women, just different issues.

Most women don’t wear enough makeup on a daily basis to alter their appearance that much. Men tend to prefer and therefore focus on those who do. Yet simultaneously resent them for it. As usual whenever men are discussing Party Girl Stacy’s behavior as if it’s “women’s” behavior as a monolith.

My skin breaks out if you look at it funny so I do not wear makeup except for special events (weddings, work receptions, etc). Not wearing makeup has not been a disadvantage to me in finding partners.

I don't think it really increases overall demand. Men would still want women regardless. It's just that a woman who normally may not catch your eye without makeup will, this applies to hair and clothing though too. Your eye may go to the beautiful blonde who just spent $400 on highlights because she actually has mousey brown hair and spends hundreds on olaplex to keep her hair long despite the damage from bleach.

Eh go to your local hippie commune or crunchy granola town, there are plenty of ungroomed couples and women without makeup having copious sex and strong emotional bonds.

Makeup has been around since the dawn of humanity. Berries used for lips and cheeks, kohl used for eyes for millennia. Nobody has to date women who use makeup, but many do.

However, as I said, there are plenty of hippie, crunchy granola types and conservative religious types who don't.

I personally like girls without makeup and so do most men I know. A lot of women do really look better without it but so many think they don’t. I have tried to get past girlfriends to stop wearing it so much and they would for a little bit but like someone in this thread said other women shit on them when they do.

One time when I was hooking up with this chick, we were kissing and shit the whole time then after we got done I went to the bathroom and literally half my face was white lol. We don’t wanna deal with that shit lol.

I never honestly understood a bunch of makeup. I'll wear lip gloss and eye liner on most days, but on occasion I'll add mascara and eye shadow. Rarely do I wear foundation. I am not one of those women who keep up with what is "in" for make up. If I wear eyeshadow it reflects what color I'm wearing, or something with a hint of green to being out my green eyes.

Don't get me wrong, if I knew how to make my nose look different I might try it, I ended up with my mother's hawk nose.
