Most women exchange dinner or drinks for sex.

I hear this a lot. Do you have evidence that suggests dinner/drinks ends with sex with any statistical significance? If so, you might have an argument, though the next question would be if the goal was to trade the two. And if sex is treated as a commodity, why mightn't the woman choose to give it freely?

The underlying assumption seems to be that women are loathe to have sex unless there's an exchange involved, which seems to include other assumptions that (at least in my experience) are largely false.

Women have sex with men they enjoy being around. If you're going to say that if the man at any point buys something for the woman, then she's a prostitute, then just about every single guy is a male prostitute when you get into the LTRs.

Most men - in my experience - refuse to let a woman pay for dinner. I've offered to split before and been declined every single time.

Also, when I go on a date with a guy, I don't see it as him buying me dinner in exchange for sex. I may or may not even "give" him sex.

I've been off the dating market for going on a decade, but I'll be the asshole who says it:

If a guy ever expected (or let) me pay, he would not be getting anything more than a good night handshake, and I certainly wouldn't take his call afterwards.

Chivalry is important to me. If you want me to act like a lady, you better act like a gentleman.

Edit: The decision to have sex - or even a good night kiss - was independent of him paying for me. There are plenty of men in the US who paid to take me out, who never got so much as a kiss on the cheek.

But not paying for me was a sign that our gender expectations weren't in line, so it was an automatic next.

Prostitutes have sex with men who they would normally never have sex with. They do this for a lot of money. Women on dates may accept a meal before sex, but chances are they wanted to have sex with you anyways. I cant see a woman think "well he paid for my spaghetti I guess I'll let him fuck me now even though I'm not attracted to him at all." Buying a woman a drink or a meal is more of a way to access getting to know her, not access to sex because she can just turn you down if she doesn't want to fuck you.

By that definition, literally everyone who has sex would be a prostitute. No one exchanges dinner and drinks for sex (well, not normally). Dinner and drinks may be what lead to sex because of the good time a couple is having, but it isn't prostitution. No one says "Oh, you paid for this gift, let's fuck. I owe you one." I get that some people want to "reward" their partners for a good time, but prostitutes don't "reward".

I've got a couple of male friends in Europe who always insist on paying for meals - and the relationship is entirely platonic (I'm not their type physically at all!). I ask them why and they say it was the way they were raised and if I find it offensive they're sorry. They've even gone off and sneakily paid so I won't try to pay....it's not all about sex!

I always offer to pay my half (and just accept it if they really insist on paying) and I often just buy someone something randomly if they always seem to be paying for me. It's not a balance book though. I find it a bit weird when people feel the need to add everything up and make sure it's all fair. Life and relationships/friendships aren't really like that, ime....

If a guy insists on paying, it's his problem if he expects sex out of it. I didn't offer that and I'm not willing to play prostitute.
