Technology changed the world. The world hasn’t ended yet…people still meet, love, procreate and die. Change is hard but constant.

Question OP: has technology made us more independent, isolated and lonely and taken us away from our nature as social beings?

Or did technology just reveal that we were wrong all along, that when we don’t need to all cooperate for survival and are free to put ourselves first we actually prefer to be individualistic loners?

Most jobs were manual, so women depended on stronger humans (men) to produce labor, give protection, provide, etc. and women were free from riskier jobs as pregnancy was more than risky enough by itself

In a lot of cultures and countries women did lots of heavy labor. Farming wasn't easy and women did lots of it. Women worked in plants and in some countries they used to work in mines as well. Women worked in toxic factories as well, read about matchstick girls if you don't know about them. So no, gender roles didn't make much sense even in the past. The peak of traditional gender roles was in the 50's, but even then a lot of women worked and "white fence house" kind of thing was common mostly among white >middle class population.

So yes, women were oppressed. Men didn't have it much better btw.

What we have now is inherently better. There are some other issues, mostly tied to capitalism and environmental crisis, but I'd choose these issues over dying in childbirth or getting sold to the highest bidder by my parents.

It's also interesting to see how legalizing euthanasia is a bad thing in your eyes. There are people who are terminally ill and who won't ever get better. Why not help them to stop their suffering?

what technology did was get women talking to each other and we all realized that it's not that we need to be prettier/thinner/etc because men are treating pretty/thin/young women just as bad as they are treating us.

It helped many women realize that the problem isn't themselves, it's how men are socialized to be fundamentally incompatible with women/love/healthy relationships.

With any changes in society there are winners and losers.

Personally, I love the changes that have taken place in society: birth control, euthanasia, decline of marriage, decreasing sexual exclusivity, the whole lot.

We are now in a position where no-one has to stay in a bad, abusive or merely unhappy relationship.

In the past, when divorce was illegal or condemned, that created a perverse incentive: you could try less, offer less, do less in a relationship and still keep your partner.

Today, you have to constantly make what you offer attractive to your partner(s), as they are always free to leave. We now have to be better men/women if we want our relationships to last. It is not hard to do, and we now have a virtuous incentive to treat people better.

I've mentioned before: the first step in a viable solution is a complete ban of social media for people under 20 with limited exceptions. Social media warps people's perceptions of themselves and of others. It romanticizes life the way only a camera can, and overstimulates the brain in ways that affect your reality. Children carry these perceptions into adulthood, with only the talented and beautiful really able to capitalize on social media's riches.

You'd think with the level of teenage prescription drug use and a worldwide mental health crisis for teenage girls, that someone would have stepped in by now. But 9-18 year olds run the demands of the economy, and technocrats need to prime kids for a lifetime of corporate servitude.

There's nothing wrong with technology itself. It's the people who don't know who how to adapt to it who need to do a better job adapting. Some people not being able to adapt to technology is not a good reason to limit it.

True, technology means women have more work options, but it doesn’t mean women want to work more than men. Women more than men still want to reduce or stop working at some point (often when kids come along) and be supported at least in part by a man. This relates directly to hypergamy.

We are emphasizing girls and women in education, encouraging women to go into high commitment fields, but in the end most women eventually want a guy to help provide for them. Dating experts often address the problems caused by this, though they are typically reluctant to address the shifts that are causing the issues.

I think that is an interesting thought OP. Replacing our virtues with mechanisms that orevent the bad consequences is technically what happened. What I wanted to point out is where we go from here: I think either we turn back to the old virtues and remove some technology from our lives, or (an this is much more likely) new virtues naturally emerge that deal with the dangers and negative consequences of technology.

For centuries religion has held back progress by getting people to believe that it's value judgements are somehow more "moral", some people still believe that and will until their deaths. The rest of us have realized that religion doesn't hold a corner on the morality market and we can decide for ourselves what is right and wrong.

Forcing people to live when they are suffering isn't morally superior

Pressuring women to marry men they aren't happy with isn't morally superior to men getting sexual pleasure from sex robots and virtual girlfriends

Trapping people in unhappy marriages isn't better than someone living alone with a dog.

I'm unsure what point you're trying to make. Biology itself can be oppressive. This is like arguing against anti-aging cures (when/if they come about) because before they existed people had to wrestle with mortality. And?

We are indeed more free from morality and religion and tradition, but those moral systems made perfect sense before widespread technology that allowed us to patch consequences. We replaced dependence on those systems to dependence on that technology to undo consequences, and we will only become more and more dependent on technology.

Technology makes civilization possible, so unless you're arguing for a Paleolithic return to form, this is an irrelevant point.

Holy unwarranted, unnecessary, and improbable conclusions Batman. What's to say the last step isn't freedom from the suffering that plagues the human experience? People commit suicide because they are in pain; take away the pain and you likely reduce suicide. Further, you've failed to show how progressivism leads to 'life' being a problem and failed to indicate how technology would lead us to a morality that views life as a problem --- especially because you spend several paragraphs arguing that technology makes life easier and more consequence-free.

We just have to learn to adapt.

I have seen first hand the effects screen time has had on children (particularly boys who use it more). They can't self regulate, their executive functioning skills are fucked, their social skills and their fine motor skills. That's not to mention the impact of the content itself. Algorithms that direct and strengthen certain political views, appalling self esteem from unrealistic beauty standards, porn brain, shock content that traumatizes...I could go on.

However, if we have widespread information and education around this, the problem would not be so bad. We know all the detrimental effects of drugs, alcohol and unhealthy food - why not technology?

All the modern consequences of the deterioration of committed relationships wouldn't exist if birth control and modern methods of abortion didn't exist, yes.
