The issue isn't just Jenny, Forrest Gump is mentally impaired that's why she gets a lot of hate, if Jenny was a man he would probably get more hate now because it would be seen as predatory

Yes of course. But not just me. As other people have pointed out, this hypothetical film would not get made. People would be way too outraged at the idea of a lighthearted movie which depicts that level of abuse by a man against a woman.

Considering we would be taking a widely hated character and making them part of a group that is judged more harshly and held to higher standards, yeah there is no doubt that character would be hated far more.

Yes, people would absolutely view it differently if the genders were swapped.

Man Jenny would be criticized heavily for leading someone on, using someone as a backup option, and refusing to commit. The focus of the discussion would overwhelmingly be on his behavior.

Female Forrest, on the other hand, would likely receive far more sympathy than accountability. Most of the conversation would be about how she was manipulated, used, misled, or taken advantage of rather than why she kept returning to the same person for years.

That's why the gender swap is interesting. In the original story, plenty of people criticize Jenny while still expecting Forrest to take some responsibility for staying attached to her. If the roles were reversed, I think much more of the blame would be placed on Man Jenny and much less on Female Forrest.

At the same time, I don't think years of repeatedly pursuing someone who clearly isn't giving you what you want should be completely ignored regardless of gender. Even with low intelligence, most people eventually learn from repeated outcomes. If the same person keeps rejecting commitment, choosing others, and producing the same result over and over, there comes a point where continuing to invest is also a decision.

The real question isn't whether Man Jenny would be blamed. He would. The question is whether Female Forrest would receive the same scrutiny Forrest does, and I don't think she would.

It would be the same. Manipulative man strings along disabiled women and gives her his kid to raise right before he dies. It's bad either way.

Forrest Gump is such a fascinating examination of media literacy.

I think the movie is a story that can easily be gender swapped. A woman simply would not be allowed to rise to the same heights as Forrest (especially during this time period), and it's unlikely a man would be sexually exploited to the same extent that Jenny was her entire life.

I think there are some scenes that would be viewed more darkly, but the story overall is hard to easily swap.

Forrest Gump was an uncomfortable for me to watch. It's a story of disabled guy being used by others. Jenny most likely came back to forest only because she is desperate.

I don't think it's gonna change if it's was a women being used.

Edit: I just realized it's gonna be way horrible. Imagine a guy impregnating a women and leaving. Then coming back to her cause he has aids and is going to die and he has no one else to take care of him before his death. I didn't mention that fact that it's a disabled women.

The genders can't be swapped in Forrest Gump because the story wouldn't be coherent.

Rewriting everything to make it coherent would make it such a different story that no one would recognize it as a gender swapped Forrest Gump.

Everything that spun off of Vietnam would have to be thrown out and built from the ground up. That means no Bubba or Lt. Dan.

But prior to that point, a gender swap basically means Forrest being sexually abused by his mother. After finally getting away from the abuse, he's able to focus on his education and begins to excel. One night, after hanging out with a life long friend that is a bit slow and he thinks of as a child, they go back to his dorm and in a moment of poor judgment, gets her off.

Forrest reflects on his actions and is over come with shame. He now believes he is like his mother because he abused his friend that he thinks of as a child. The shame sets him on a path of self-destruction because he believes he is a bad person, and it's what he deserves. Every now and then, he bumps into his friend and they appear to be doing well, and they have expressed how much they love Forrest. But Forrest doesn't recognize it as love, because his understanding of love has been deeply corrupted by the abuse of his mother.

He has gone from abusive relationship to abusive relationship that seems normal to what he understands love to be, and the shame prevents the growth needed to recognize different representations of love.

... That's about all that can work in a gender swap. The rest has to be completely overhauled.

Not only would Man-Jenny be held accountable, his life would be over. Nobody would try to defend Jerry hooking up with Flora Gump and Flora's interest is irrelevant, she has a severe intellectual impairment.

Other than Temple Grandin, I'm struggling to think of a film that is even about a developmentally disabled woman. I certainly can't think of one that plays it off as a joke.

They don't make those kinds of movies and any male character seen to be taking advantage of such a female character would be universally hated by women.

Being a toxic person doesn’t start with raping and murdering. And exploiting someone else’s feelings is wrong, even if you are a woman who has been abused. People should stop pretending this somehow gives anyone a leeway.
