Joined female dating strategy to get some ideas of how women think.
And I think very few women think that way. It seems to genuinely not like men

i joined it to low key get some actual tips and also because the name itself was kinda intriguing (in retrospect, "female dating strategy" should have been enough of an indicator that it was a femcel haven). i believe i'm banned now.
and they don't just hate men. they literally seem to regard them as some inferior subspecie who should bend over backwards for them and put them on a pedestal 24/7, no matter how flawed they themselves are. categorizing every single guy into "low value" and "high value", having ridiculous demands like having no history of mental illnesses, putting up with all their shit with no questions asked etc all for ensuring "maximum female benefit" is just so absurd and ridiculous. what sane person even considers all of this a healthy relationship?

Tumblr. I know its old hat to say it these days but. It was Tumblr.

EDIT: Well that didn’t take very long. I responded to a post where they were complaining that men don’t put as much effort into looking good as women.
All I did was explain to them that men are more visual creatures than women and that women care more about a man providing resources and status (backed up by multiple fields of science) and that while women are putting effort into making themselves look good, men are putting more effort into making money 🤷🏾♂️

well, no. the point of the course is to question entrenched patterns of domination by men over women.
There are a million different reasons for this, and it's not because men are blocking or inhibiting women from fields of work. It's because they choose different jobs, work different hours, etc.
No one is trying to keep women from being garbage collectors, sewer technicians, plumbers, or lineman. those are dangerous, dirty jobs that women typically don't choose. It's not domination, it's biology that's drives most of those differences.
[–]ProbablyDiseased0 points 5 years ago [recovered] (6 children) | Copy Link

What do you think the push for universal student debt forgiveness is for? People who go into viable fields of study for their future careers aren't typically the ones that need help paying back their loans.
[–]SoMuchJamImToast 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That's why if there's debt forgiveness, we need to make sure that it costs universities a lot of money. They've been selling worthless degrees that do nothing but create divisive narratives and do not do anything to solve the underlying problems and we've made them incredibly wealthy in order for them to do so.
[–]StalkTheHype[🍰] -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Nawh man, that aint it. Studends in the US are getting fleeced hardcore. Even people who get headhunted straight out of college should oppose the demented debt-driven education system in the US.

Uhh no thats not necessarily true
[–]Tomnnn 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
I feel similarly about programming courses at colleges. The intro courses might stick around but the pacing at colleges is absurdly slow. If it's something that really interests you then a weekend of googling stuff will teach you as much as several months of college for it.
[–]fedditredditfood 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
That's true for most college courses.
[–]Tomnnn 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Is getting a job afterwards as easy for other stuff? I only know my own experience from this field and feel like I would have been better off if I didn't go to college. 4 years of work experience would be a lot more valuable to me.
Also my first job was in the right field but covered stuff I never did in college lol. College was Java, c++, c#, assembly, python, etc. First job? Web and mobile dev.
[–]fedditredditfood 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Not sure, I didn't work much in the fields my college qualified me for.
In my opinion, college is taught to the lowest common denominator, just like high school. With the exception of maybe highly technical/specialized fields, I think any college degree qualifies you to be hired, not to do the job.
It's a club you've joined; partied for four years, maintained enough wherewithal to graduate, don't let the uneducated peons know how insignificant it really is.
[–]Tomnnn 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I wonder how common this is...
I usually paint that experience in a negative light to maybe help someone who might not need it avoid the expense of time and money. I made some friends in college but I wouldn't say that was worth the money, especially since I probably could have met them some other way.
It doesn't help that in just 2-3 months of working at my own pace on the summer break before college, I could tell course material was outdated from day 1. The best thing I remember from college that wouldn't sound like some over the top r/iamverysmart bragging was the food trucks. The prices were great, the portions were great, the health value compared to fast food was acceptable, and the flavor was unlike anything I've had since.
[–]Dopplegangr1 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
At least for me college was less about learning and more about learning what I wanted to learn. I studied comp sci and blew past everyone else since I was interested and taught myself, but college exposed me to things that I might not have found on my own

[–]JoseyS -3 points-2 points-1 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Alright, so HR is a pretty big job market where gender studies an appriviated course of study. It could also be a solid undergraduate study for a law degree where the lawyer is aiming to practice discrimination law. They also could also be good elective courses for students majoring in any other field so they can learn about the nuance's of gender in society which could be a very valuable bit of knowledge for any career where you interact with other people.
I've also never taken a gender studies class but it's pretty clear it could serve as a solid base of knowledge for a lot of people.
Also, I just want to let you know being aggressively ignorant doesn't make you look smart here.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
HR needs you to pair that gender studies with a business related degree.

Math degrees are quite fantastic. It can help you land jobs in CS research/Maths and computing related fields. And yes, they do pay you very handsomely to do calculus provided you can do it well enough and not just some basic indefinite integrals.
As for history, it's just marginally above gender studies but atleast their studies aren't based on some immeasurable quantities and rather historical facts. And they still can get jobs in schools as history is taught more widely than gender studies or they can even get into archeological fields.

[+]majoranticipointment -10 points-9 points-8 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
White privilege is the idea that your race makes it easier than it would be if you were a minority. It doesn't mean your life is amazing and you're having a great time. It means you're better off than you would be.

[–]SoMuchJamImToast 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
But in this context who cares? Here's somebody sharing a terrible story about their life and you're here giving them a lecture about it. I really don't think this approach has any chance to reduce racism.
In my opinion it would make much more sense to teach about the damage of prejudice, how almost every unconsciously judges people based on appearance, about being aware of your own premature judgments.
Even better would be to pilot both approaches and measure whether either has an appreciable impact, but of course applying measurement and scientific scrutiny to progressive policies is always considered a non-starter.

[–]Corona-and-Lyme 26 points27 points28 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Problem is that not being actively discriminated against isn't a privilege, it is the baseline expectation. Calling it such just shifts the focus away from the actual problem and devolves the conversation into a shitty oppression contest.
[–]gjoel 15 points16 points17 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It's difficult to hit complete strangers over the head with "I bet you're being treated like a human being" though, so they had to come up with something offensive. And then become super aggressive if you take offence.
[–]hekanf 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
People really are too aggressive. So I suppose I’ll kill anyone who’s aggressive to me.
[–]Fafoah -3 points-2 points-1 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I mean its a pretty self explanatory term and its only offensive if you’re insecure. Do they really need to change the term because people are offended at the idea that they have a comparative advantage in certain aspects of life?
I’m asian and I can comfortably acknowledge that Asian Privilege exists relative to other minority groups in relation to how we are treated my law enforcement. Yes some officers can be hostile towards asians like everyone else and obviously we have our own unique struggles right now and experience racism, but in general we are treated better than black people and latinos by law enforcement (asians aren’t going to be actively shot at or arrested for no reason to the same extent.)
No one likes to be called privileged because they feel it invalidates their very real struggles, but it is what it is. Privilege literally means an advantage held by a specific group of people.
[–]MrMindwaves 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yep, This is the exact same problem as the term "Toxic masculinity", not a atttack at men in any way (in fact quite the opposite) but the term put SO many people off trying to not devolves the conversation is near impossible.
[–]xRoyalewithCheese 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
As someone who often votes blue, the left has a way with coming up for really terrible phrases that give false impressions of good causes
[–]Fafoah -3 points-2 points-1 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think the need for more passive language is a completely different conversation in and of itself, but privilege is literally defined as : a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group. Objective data has proven that White Americans have advantages when it relates to employment, acquiring loans, selling homes, treatment by law enforcement, etc.
Acknowledging that it exists doesn’t mean that your unique individual struggles are invalid. Try to empathize with the millions if people who have been fighting for equality for years, several playing by their oppressors rules and protesting peacefully.
Imagine your family and community members are being killed in the streets and then being asked to tone down your language because it hurts people feelings.
[–]gjoel 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
I think we're all acknowledging a disadvantage for certain groups especially black exists, but they're literally trying to gain supporters by verbally attacking the people they are trying to recruit.
People trotting up to you and exclaiming "check your privilege" convinces few people, whereas explaining how the fundamental rights of black people are being trampled is, at least for me, much more effective.
Implying that people who don't like the expression are somehow fragile or insecure - or don't understand it - is likewise not going to win you many friends.

I did come from a privileged background. Well... sort of. Here’s the thing a lot of people fail to consider, what do you mean by background ? If we are just talking parents then yeah, I’d say I am privileged. My dads a police man, my mum works for the NHS, but they could afford to pay my rent at uni (otherwise I literally could not go). Pay for sports clubs etc. But my parents themselves didn’t have a privileged background. They came from working class families, my grandparents jobs were: a nurse, metal shop worker, school cook, and a construction worker.
My parents were the first of their families to get a degree because they worked hard to save up and then go. They weren’t privileged, at least in a class sense. But I am. But they worked hard so that I could have that upbringing, in a sense they worked to make my “privilege” so if someone tries to make me feel bad for that, what I feel they are really doing in my case is insulting the effort my parents put in to their plans for me.
[–]Chewy12 9 points10 points11 points 5 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
The whole privilege thing really started as more a response to the bootstraps folks who think that their reality is fine so the world doesn't need any fixing. It's important that people recognize when they are privileged in certain contexts so we can help make the world a better place for everyone.
It's devolved in many cases as a way to insult and look down at people. It is not important that you feel bad about your privilege, as that kind of goes against the whole making the world a better place thing.
[–]HolyFuckingShitNuts 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Charities and legislation for the latter two questions, as just two examples. Recognition of privilege is part of the equation, not the whole thing. It creates empathy which creates societal change.
Not sure what you're asking with the first question.
[–]thirsty_lil_monad 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's meant to be a way of creating empathy, instead it's used by people who have taken one liberal arts course to bully others. It's a damn shame because there actually IS a lot of value in Gender Studies but... It's academia. People who use the terms outside of academia are like people saying "F" or "Downvote me" in real life.

How does being blind to inherent bias help us?
Defining it and ways it influences our thinking, planning, and politics is super important.
[–]Eruharn -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Recognizing privilige is how we're getting criminal justice reforms. Its not "oh youre white, you must have a charmed and pleasant homelife". People are generally talking social privilige, how if youre not white youre much more likely tohave interactions with police and each of those interactions are very likely to be significantly worse outcomes than for a white person in the same situation.
So i cant do anything about a person who was raised by shitty parents. But i sure as hell can demand my publicly funded police force (or other governing bodies) recognize and correct their biases.
[–]RedCascadian 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yup. And people need to better understand how things like critical theory and intersectionality work before throwing accusations at people. I was a dumb but well intentioned white guy turned dumb and pissed off white guy by people who wanted to be woker than thou but didn't really understand this stuff fully.
Then actually hearing people who had made their careers studying this stuff explain this in a way that didn't act like I was trash for not knowing already made me go "oh... yeah that makes sense. And tracks with how I felt about this but didn't know how to articulate."
[–]quantisegravity_duh 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Very well worded and I agree completely. You shouldn’t feel insulted for having it pointed out. But I have had cases where people have actively treated me negatively because of it. Or phrase pointing it out as if it’s an inherent negative.
[–]foreverhalcyon8 -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
The “privilege” comes from the opportunity to excel due to the color of your skin. Education, job opportunities, loans, etc. It doesn’t mean that a person didn’t work hard and earn it, just that they were provided more opportunity due to the color of their skin. Compound that over several generations and you have privilege.
I’m only really talking here about class privilege. Skin colour isn’t the only thing people are prejudice about.

I can top this: born with one leg and was poor most of my childhood BECAUSE of my disability and medical bills (to the point I fled the USA at 18 cause I basically had no choice, but I'm lucky to have a dual citizenship with Germany), and I have legit had random keyboard warriors right here on reddit try to argue they are more oppressed than me because they belong to a minority race and I'm still white. Therefore, their opinion has more value than mine and I should trust them. Like I'll just voice X opinion on subject Y, and some asian dude or whatever will show up and be like "no see you don't really understand oppression as well as I do so that's why your opinion is misinformed. Source: am Asian, so I know oppression."
Like first they just shamelessly play oppression olympics and try to have a competition for which group is the least privileged, then they decide "OH HEY LOOK HOW ABOUT THAT MY GROUP IS MORE OPPRESSED THAN YOURS GEE WHO SAW THAT COMING," and then the very same people who will shout about their group not being given a voice will encourage me to shut mine down because they're about 7% less privileged than me, so obviously my opinion can't hold any value compared to them.
I can't name a single individual who would say "identity politics are a good thing" and yet every so often somehow there still manages to be individuals so drunk on identity politics Koolaid that they don't realize how absurd they sound.

Your darker skinned cohort on a 1:1 basis in things like job interviews will have less success on average. That’s all privilege is: a slight advantage in 1:1 comparisons between two folks of different skin tones. An example would be two poor folks driving their run down vehicle. One is white, one is black. The black dude is much more likely to be pulled over, then, after being pulled over, more likely to be searched, arrested, etc.
Privilege doesn’t mean that the gods gave you a special blessing and you can do no wrong. It’s just been twisted into that by... certain folks.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link
The problem is using nothing more than the gender and skin color of a person to say they inherently have privilege. White privilege isn't a thing, male privilege isn't a thing. There's plenty of white people with privilege, there's also just as many if not more white people born into squalor. The only way they're getting out of that isn't because they're white, it's if they bust their ass and work extremely hard.
[–]jrp162 -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
I think you miss the point. The concept is meant to imply basically that whiteness is like the default settings of society. It’s not to say you necessarily are advancing because of your whiteness but rather you aren’t being held back because of the color of your skin (or your gender). that also doesn’t imply that in certain social fields that whiteness couldn’t be a marker that would hold you back, but that the larger social field has been shown to discriminate against people of color, particularly black people. See red lining, gerrymandering, housing discrimination, job discrimination. It’s really tough right now because society is in a lot of ways transforming toward more equality but we can’t forget that for a lot of black people their parents and parents parents were actively denied advancement that stifled their economic and social progress, resulting in generational poverty. To say that hasn’t happen to poor white people as well would be untrue. Again, it’s not a comparison, it’s to draw a point that non-whiteness has held people back in America in particular. I know you aren’t likely to change your mind, but as a white guy from Mississippi I can tell you from first hand experience that black people are discriminated against. I’m happy to talk more about it.
[–]oldboy_and_the_sea 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
The fact that someone can inherit millions of dollars tax free just perpetuates generational privilege which has become more of an issue during the pandemic as the rich have grown richer. A fair tax on these dollars similar to what you’d be taxed had you actually earned the money yourself seems like a common sense solution that would minimize the racial disparities caused by redlining and other forms of discrimination that went unchecked in the past.
[–]jrp162 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Agreed. We can’t forget that racial discrimination and gender discrimination are all bound up in economic discrimination.
Class is the root of it all really.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Why should someone be taxed on money that's already been taxed prior? That I dont agree with. If I've earned my money, saved my money and already been taxed on that money as income I should be free to do with or give that money to whoever i want without the government deciding they're entitled to a large portion of it
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Previously absolutely. I'm not saying there's not historically plenty of discrimination and whatnot. Now however not so much. I have no problem addressing actual problems of racism, I am more referring to the examples used today which rarely ever boil down to more than every single problem in your life is because of your race, gender, sexual orientation or other defining characteristic. I'll change my verbiage to say I've never heard "white privilege" used in a valid argument of actual racial discrimination. Overuse of terms have led to them losing their actual meaning and gravity imo.
[–]jrp162 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
While I agree that things have clearly improved since like the 60s and 70s, I would disagree with an argument to say racism or discrimination is “not so much today.” Gerrymandering, redlining, police brutality, mass incarceration of black men are all still real problems today. All linked to generational poverty and racism. The problem is that it’s both a systemic policy issue and a social issue.
I do agree that the tactics and means by which people try to articulate these issues often result in both sides digging in their heels. The terminology over usage and poor usage without grounding can have a negative effect when ultimately what you are trying to do is persuade. So yes. Overuse and misuse is bad. But I would disagree that it’s not an issue that needs to be addressed today.
Also—another great example. Defund the police! To some that means disband the police. To a lot of advocates that means demilitarize the police, require more training, increase their pay!, stop sending police when a community counselor is what is needed, make police more accountable for violence and weapons use, reduce training that promotes a mentality of us vs. them. But when the Foxnews crowd hears defund the police they aren’t crazy to feel like that’s an extreme position. Instead of talk about the issue though we just whip each other up using scare tactics. Which all serve to keep the rich rich and the poor fighting each other.
[–]powersje1 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Go up and tell a attractive women to acknowledge her looks privilege. Just make her admit it and help her understand that she got where she is because of it. You wouldn’t because it would be rude. Go tell a black athlete that genetic privilege is how they got their starting spot on a sports team. Pointing out privilege just because you don’t have them and need some excuse is just trying to stir shit because your petty and need to point a finger at someone or something
[–]jrp162 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Again I think that misses the point.
It isn’t about YOU. It’s about other people. I think we can agree the terminology here is flawed because it inherently makes you think it’s about you. It’s about a larger social construct that denies social and economic advancement as a result of skin color. You may think it doesn’t exist but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t. Black people have and are denied jobs, housing, loans, and a range of opportunities because of their blackness.
Just like you may be denied a range of opportunities because of some reason. Some of those are also systemic (class, cultural capital, accent, physical things). Just because those things occur doesn’t mean non-whiteness isn’t a discriminating factor. Just because you don’t think you discriminate doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen (and frequently) to people of color.
Again I’m not saying that walking up to someone and saying “you have white privilege” is the appropriate way to acknowledge or fix problems. I’m saying it is a thing, the terminology just sucks. Perhaps we can rename it as a group to better articulate what’s going on?
[–]St_Veloth-1 points 5 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link
People with easy to pronounce, Anglo-Saxon names are picked for job opportunities more than say African or Indian names.
What word should we use to describe the phenomenon where people with “ethnic” names get passed up for opportunities even if they have been busting their ass and working hard?
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
So if a white guy named their child an African name and a black person named their child Jon Smith the black person would be hired by that logic correct?
[–]quantisegravity_duh -3 points-2 points-1 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I agree to an extent... there have been some studies that demonstrate for example that people with “African sounding names” with identical qualifications were less likely to be accepted into certain universities, with the trend being way outside any statistical error.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Asians with SUPERIOR qualifications are less likely to be accepted too. Universities in general are scum and not indicative of the real world. There's no policy or system that grants privilege, theres just shitty people who are prejudiced, and it affects everyone equally
[–]quantisegravity_duh -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
For sure it all comes down to shitty people. I think it’s just that said shitty people can have an effect on one demographic more than the other is the idea behind privilege. Yeah the Harvard scandal was bad. Universities in general are not scum that’s way to simple. They do ALOT of good and often have a better idea of how to make the world a better place more than the government of the country most of the time. The PR and admin side can be dicey though for sure in certain cases. Depends on which institution we are talking about I guess.
[–]phro 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If it's not universally distributed by color or the benefits don't travel with you when you're a minority in another country then it is not your whiteness conveying the privilege. It is simply a majority privilege.

The problem with privilege is that people don't check their when they talk about it. Someone pointing out white privilege doesn't understand the middle class privilege they have and how poor white privilege is much worse than middle class black privilege. Privilege has become a code work for saying men and whites are bad instead of a way to analyze all the benefits you had in your life that others didn't.
Sure, the average white person has more middle class privilege than the average black person but that means nothing when you are dealing with a white person who was raised in poverty.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I've had materially and obviously more privileged people than me call me privileged and go on rants about my demographic, to my face, in polite company, with prejudice. It was as racist and sexist as it gets. No one spoke up.
It doesn't at all come from considering people's circumstances or what dynamics exist. It's a mob that hates certain demographics and feels righteous about it.
They will never be satisfied. Don't try. Be the best person you can be. Focus on the people in your life and those you come across. The millions of online personas and their discourse is nothing more than a chorus from the depths of hell.

I think the important thing for most (aside from the super rich where I believe wealth redistribution is a moral obligation) is being able to acknowledge your own privilege, observe that others are not as fortunate, but still treat them with the same respect you’d expect for yourself. Aside from that though, unless your super rich, there’s nothing wrong. For their to be wealthy people there have to be poor as well. There me be some societal issues with how some people come to be either, but just growing up privileged isn’t something that’s appropriate to be made to feel bad for, as long as you still acknowledge what you have and how you fit into the world.
[–]RedCascadian 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, I really hate when people try and push the white guilt angle. I'm white, and a socialist, and I don't feel guilty about being white, and I don't want other people to feel guilty for being white. Guilt breeds toxicity.
I want people to understand that yeah, they do have privileges, and a pot of them stem from past injustices. Those injustices aren't their fault. But we owe it to each other and our children to clean up the messes previous generations left for us, even if it makes us uncomfortable. Because that's how we make the world better.

Apparently it's been 9 years and you still dont understand the word. It's not that your life was easier because the color if your skin. It was just never harder because the color of your skin.
Your definition is provably false because as long as there is one person who was attacked just for being white, it shows that white people's lives can be made worse because of their skin color.
Privilege is meant to talk about averages and doesn't apply when you talk to individuals. No one is average when you measure on many dimensions.

White privilege is not easy to see in individual cases like yours but it's incredibly obvious to see when you look at statistics as a whole. The clearest example is housing discrimination.
I grew up poor in a big white family with uneducated parents in a very conservative un-diverse state (Idaho) and I didn't believe in white privilege either but as an adult I've come to find out that white privilege is indeed a thing and we need to figure out as a society how to make things more fair for everyone.

Not belittling your struggles at all, but just wanted to say that the idea doesn't have to be that because you have hardships you aren't privileged, but that person probably made a bad argument to you / was a dick. My best in person example was that as a truck driver the weigh stations would frequently give me a pass if they found an issue, but it was always Indians and Pakistanis getting fucked over there for the smallest shit while I knew I had similar issues that the station officer would overlook for me. I at the time I was pay check to pay check but I acknowledge now that what I experienced was privilege. It doesn't belittle my personal struggles though. I find people will generalize privilege too much but it comes down to small interactions like that. Being privileged doesn't mean I'm rich and get the best in life, but it might mean that a cop won't ticket me or that a convenience store won't eye me down while I shop. Hope you and your family are doing well.

You can be poor and lack economic privileges while still having privileges for being white. These aren’t mutually exclusive factors—they can intersect .
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (22 children) | Copy Link
So what would those privileges be?
[–]raijinpele 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link
It depends on the situation and context. Like applying for a job with a white sounding name being advantageous in many scenarios, or when you’re a kid in school and the teacher doesn’t make negative assumptions about you because of the color of your skin.
Privilege was probably not the best word to describe this phenomenon, and I know that a meme bashing gender studies in this subreddit is of course going to draw people who take the meme as validation of their beliefs that people are being unfair to white guys. The truth is that there is a lot of unfairness toward a lot of people, while people included, and it stems from how there is a culture that maintains a system of domination (or, a matrix of oppression) to keep society organized in such a way so that those who currently benefit from all of the exploitation of those with less power than them can continue their life of, well, privilege. Black feminists and black civil rights radicals, even MLK, correctly identified that the system that perpetuates this is capitalism and that there has to be a push for solidarity, even with the poor white working class, to overcome this oppression and usher in a better future for all. Anyway, enjoy your epic meme, bye.

[–]majoranticipointment 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
If you think black people aren’t targeted by police, you and I aren’t living on the same planet. “Leniency at school” refers to high school and earlier. If you’re in poverty why does it matter how Harvard selects students when you’re just trying to survive and your elementary school is threatening to expel you? Walmart greeters aren’t the type of position to have diversity hires. Again, poverty jobs are different than what you’re talking about.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
If you think black people aren’t targeted by police, you and I aren’t living on the same planet.
Black men commit a much higher rate of violent crime per capita, this will increase the interactions with police leading to bad outcomes. There isn't some grand conspiracy theory police officers secretly participate in.
“Leniency at school” refers to high school and earlier.
So they give white kids hire marks? Is that why Asians have to score the highest on SATs? I think schools just have racist policy and want a hire number of minorities from certain groups.
If you’re in poverty why does it matter how Harvard selects students when you’re just trying to survive and your elementary school is threatening to expel you?
Does this not happen to white people as well? So it's a class issue, not a race issue. Which I agree with.
[–]majoranticipointment -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Maybe that has something to do with the racial bias built into our society.
No, i said leniency, and that's what I meant. A white kid misbehaves? Oh he's just a troubled young man. A black kid misbehaves? he's a thug who can't be saved.
No, it's definitely a race issue. My point is if you're going to community college at best, why does the acceptance rates at a college you're 0% getting into any way matter? A few black people get the benefit of this policy every year. That's just tipping the scale to be more neutral instead of tilted against them.
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
Wy to fall hook and line sinker for bullshit conspiracy theories (here's two more articles).
Due to racial biases white students recieve preferential treatment over students of minority races in education systems. This is called systemic racism.
Yes it does, but this is where intersectionality and critical race theory come into play. They are frameowrk theories that view society and culture through a lense of intersections of race, class, sexuality and gender. A white person who is heterosexual and cis gender will not face the same level of prejudice as someone who is white heterosexual and transgender.
Furthermore a white low class individual will have a tougher economic struggle than a black high class individual, but the black person, despite their high class, will still suffer at the hands of racial biases, discrimination and systemic racism. You will see this black man at the top of the proverbial world (Morgan Freeman, Michael Jackson, Barrack Obama) but you won't see the millions of individuals who could not break though that barrier due to the colour of their skin or the struggles that person had to endure until they "made it".
This is not to say that "all white people" succeed due to the biases inherent in their whiteness, but that all other minorities had to struggle because they are not white. Instead of viewing these concepts as "tearing down whiteness" you should look at it more as evening the playing field and allowing all people to succeed no matter their identity and history. Everyone deserves this opportunity and that is the core message of these political movements like Feminism, BLM and Defund the Police.
Edit: Grammar
2nd edit: Please read or at least skim the articles I linked. If you want to better understand your own viewpoint, the best way is to entertain the views of the other side. Only by challenging yourself will you be able to truly learn something.
[–]raijinpele -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
A big problem in this discourse is that economic privilege is often left out of identity politics even though it was baked in. So all the white dudes who grew up in poor or working class homes haven’t woken to their own class consciousness (perhaps they see themselves as future millionaires and business owners) and understand how their economic class shaped their early life. Their race did as well, as being white in a society that’s succeeded because of white power comes with the perks of what whiteness entails and how it’s been used to justify the colonialism and occupation of non-white populations.
[–]cellygirl -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
So, you kind of proved their point without realizing it. One of the factors of privilege, psychologically, is not understanding or recognizing its role. What you have said has been repeated by others who misunderstand, many times (your individual economic experience doesn't change what white privilege is). So, I suspect you have had plenty of opportunity to see this point addressed. At this point, you're being willfully ignorant if you aren't able to articulate why being white confers privilege here. It makes no comment on your individual privilege or past experiences, simply cultural potential for discrimination. If you define being educated as sarcastic "wokeness", I seriously worry for you.
[–]Moxdonalds 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You got me. I just grew up in an area where white people made up less than 25% of the population. With Hispanics at over 40% and blacks at 22%. Every time I was beaten up because I was “in the wrong neighborhood, white boy.” As well as being stopped by the police a dozen or for walking in my own neighborhood because they wanted to know what I was doing there including having shotguns and pistols pulled on me by the police. Being followed around in stores while my non-white friends were ignored. Being denied scholarships, grants, and admission into colleges because of my skin color while my nonwhite peers with lesser academic skills and volunteer work were accepted with free rides.
When people tell me that this happens to non-whites, I fully understand that it happens because it happened to me. What I don’t understand is when I bring it up so many people dismiss it as you have.
In my experience, which you completely fail to understand or recognize, the white privilege argument is simply made to redirect racism toward white people instead of get rid of it.
[–]St_Veloth-1 points 5 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link
I always had these conversations with my friend, he would get really angry at the idea of “white privilege”. We grew up in Philly; he had it pretty rough. He had lots of younger siblings to take care when his dad wouldn’t and when their mom passed away that made everything worse. He’s been paying rent since he was a literal child.
He dropped out of high school, has been working his whole life and never could take the time or had the money for an education. Having nothing and growing in an environment where being white was enough reason to get rolled on...how could white privilege possible exist?
Well, when you get older it’s best if you grow passed being angry at the circumstances you were born into and simply do your best despite everything. When you can step outside of those feelings you start to see things differently. How assholes who were being “condescending” were legitimately trying to help. Understanding that your parents are just flawed people who didn’t know any better, it’s hard to be angry. And taking the time to understand how the conditions people are born into, is created by a million complex variables. Now, that same guy pities his father rather then being angry at him. Now, without ego, he understand how being white can be an advantage. I’m not trying to convince you to think differently, but I hope you don’t stop growing.
Here’s the hard truth because I don’t give a fuck: nobody in a bad situation wants to be told that it’s not that bad. They want to be heard and their feeings validated. Here’s the problem with America and most the developed world. We’re all hugely privledged and live in a bubble. And we need to get the fuck over ourselves.
Edit: it’s amazing how many people hear “white privilege”, have a knee-jerk reaction explaining all of their troubles and how they can’t possibly be privileged, then go on with active disdain at the idea based on their own knee-jerk concepts. Every single time. "nooooooooo i dun wanna learn an grow i wanna be angryyyy"

[–]RakeNI 17 points18 points19 points 5 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
100%. These studies seem to be made up on the go and most of it involves some part of real world exploration or activism. You'd think that the course would be mostly discussion of history and how its effected the current day, with other things like how men and women differ on things like jobs wanted, crime and so on - but no, its mostly watching stupid videos that bored and highly privileged feminists, not always women, have made.
For example, Anita Sarkeesian's awful series (by any objective metric) on video games was/is routinely watched in these courses. I cannot get over how odd this is. An entire class of people, playing an insane amount of money, to sit and watch Anita Sarkeesian lie about non-issues in video games.
Its difficult to describe just how bizarre these courses actually are, and even more bizarre is how they managed to be approved. The entire course breeds a particular mindset of radical leftism, which involves heavy overt racism, overt sexism, reality denying of basic facts on crime and gender and that usually dips into socialism or communism as well. It is easily one of the most bizarre aspects of the west that happens on what is now an industrial scale.
Going through one of these courses enthusiastically should get you treated in the same way someone who went through the Hitler Youth might be - with suspicion, but sympathy. They are victims of intense brainwashing and propaganda efforts and were scammed out of their money for the displeasure of this act.

[–]Zaungast 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
One person in this story is a university student and the other is a minimum wage worker in a precarious job with no benefits. The student asserts that the subordinate role of the worker is empowering because of patriarchical power relations; however, the story of who has power in this exchange is not clear precisely because no class analysis is present.
So no one is asserting anyone is rich. The point is that class analysis is important for understanding how power relations work between groups and individuals, and mere anti-sexism is not sufficient.
[–]beldaran1224 -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That university student very well might have a minimum wage job of their own - I did as a college student.

Median networth of white families: $188,200
Median networth of black families: $24,000
You cannot tell me that is just a coincidence. As a white man I see it all too fucking often, white people feel most conformable around other white people (just like every other race). The problem is the wealth inequality between these races and the fact that current welfare and taxes isn't doing shit to resolve this problem.
And regarding intersectionalilty, there is a valid point to be made. You cannot simply look at the conditions of white vs black and man vs woman if there are inherent biases against black women. I do not agree with all of the rampant SJW these days but the topic is worth a valid discussion
[–]Wildercard 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link
No, it's not a coincidence, it's because black people came here by boats, and white people came here by choice.
[–]Seel007 13 points14 points15 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
And also boats. Pretty sure that’s how white people got here too.
[–]Wildercard 12 points13 points14 points 5 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link
Don't you dare put your context clarifying facts into my anonymous internet zinger.
Still though, a white man and a black man have more in common if they make around the same money, than a white man making quadruple local median salary and white man making median salary.
Still though, just going [sum of $race wealth]/[number of $race] is a very big oversimplification. At the very least drop off the top 1%, billionaires are pretty much their own species by this point.

While I don’t agree that total communism is the best system I can certainly agree it’s better than unchecked capitalism. For me, I think having salaries follow some form of tanh function plus some constant for a base living income, makes the most sense. The base income means no one is so poor they will literally starve or be homeless. The tanh function means it’s initially very easy to get a higher wage but then becomes progressively harder after some value (I guess the average wage). So you can still make more for doing more but not obscene amounts.
[–]theartificialkid 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Basically everyone is oppressor and oppressed in different ways to different degrees. Everyone is a web of intersecting characteristics (skin tone, gender, stature, class, wealth, power, etc). Some aspects a person put them at a disadvantage in a society shaped by prejudice, but the same person might have other characteristics that are advantageous.
The woman from women’s studies is oppressed by being told that she should serve men, but the man in Subway is also (possibly) oppressed by a socioeconomic system that offers him an unfulfilling and impoverished life.

More than that. She is setting herself up to be completely unemployable. Gender studies can be cool. I took a class as a filler one semester and found it pretty insightful. But I found the information to be more self reflective and used introspectively. Vivian on the other hand is going to think she has to weaponize it and call BS every time she doesn't get what she wants.
[–]p9p7 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link
I am in a gender studies course right now and it’s fascinating. Extremely introspective and it has given me a whole new outlook on gender and it’s role in society. That being said, a whole degree in the field? Unless you want to pursue a PHD and do the whole academia thing, you’re better off pairing this degree with political science or some policy decision making or maybe psychology for a stem focus. I have zero clue how anyone thinks this degree on it’s own merit would warrant a long, fruitful career in some field specifically for gender studies.
[–]ZaviaGenX 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

So far we’ve done some really interesting readings ranging from doctors addressing trans women in sports to an extension of Foucault’s power dynamics to feminism. And dissenting opinion is often encouraged and voiced. All I’m getting at here is this posts’ professor is either a) not real or b) pretty fucking stupid if they think this is how you teach gender studies.

[–]BisnessPirate 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
and they think that every single class you take is directly related to your degree
This very much depends on where you live. Here in the Netherlands you basically only take classes related to your degree. Like the class that was the furthest away from my degree that I could take as part of my degree was a course on the history of the natural sciences. And that was basically that one class that was available because there was a history professor focused in that that wanted to teach it to our faculty. The rest was pretty clearly related to my degree or skills that are very clearly useful in science(things like giving presentations or the mandetory ethics class).
Except in most countries, classes are relevant to the degrees and not just some random pile of BS over another.
[–]IceEye 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If only that was the case. I took like 3 humanities and a world religions course for my IT degree. I would have killed for a gender studies course by the end of it, anything to mix it up.

Apparently any difference in opinion means you're a kid and don't have any understanding of the world
[–]CohnDev 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago* (11 children) | Copy Link
Almost literally any degree. At least around here there are 40 credits you absolutely need to get, and then 20 that basically let you pick whatever you want (for associates degree that is). I don't see why this class would me any more useless than taking a random film or pottery class.
Filler classes like these exist because usually you can't take like 4 math classes at once because of the timing and prerequisites of the classes, and going full time means you can get way more money from grants and financial aid - so there are a bunch of small easy classes like Gender Studies and Film Study to buff up your schedule.
[–]TheRumpelForeskin 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago* (10 children) | Copy Link
Where the hell is that a thing? There's a uni out there where you can do a maths degree and get credit for it with a class on film study? You're talking about university where you get a degree right? Not a high school?
Both universities I went to had a few optional classes in 3rd and 4th year but it was from a list of about 15 relevant classes to your degree, not some completely useless random shit which has nothing to do with your degree. How can you say you have a maths degree when you spent time at university attending and earning credits at a fucking Film Study class?
Lived with 3 years with someone doing an undergraduate in mathematics, if he came home on day saying he just had a class that's anything other than maths, maths theory or a logic class I would have thought he'd gone insane.
Do you also have to attend mandatory P.E class at this university and have parent teacher evenings?
I had 2 different subjects throughout university but that's because it's in the literal name of the degree. BSc. International Business and French, which is usually pretty rare.
[–]CohnDev 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
As far as I know it's a thing all over the US, and it's not even a bad thing like you're making it out to be - but based on your post history it's fairly obvious you're a pissed off EU pleb who doesn't like the US, so i'm not going to continue to explain something to someone who doesn't have their mind open.
Next time dare to learn and improve yourself and your understanding of others.
[–]TheRumpelForeskin 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
Not EU and don't dislike the US, or have any opinion for that matter. No idea what made you think that.
But you never commented on any of those points. Yes this idea is new and crazy to me, countering the entire idea and reason behind studying a degree in a specialised subject, particularly when you're paying a lot of money to specialise in a particular subject, but it just appears we're both guilty of assuming all university structures in the world were the same. The reason I'm questioning it is because it sounds insane to me and would do to anyone else who went to university with me.
Especially the barrage of other replies, confidentially calling me either an idiot or someone that has definitely never been to university for simply questioning why on earth someone would be in a film class while studying a business degree. It's like a fever dream.
It seems like others in this thread need to listen to your final sentence.
[–]Skadumdums 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You're like stuck on this film class thing. It's just called an elective and you don't take that many of them each semester. They're meant to provide a well rounded graduates or so you can find out that you are interested in a different type of degree.
[–]CohnDev -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
What made me think that was you posting on the r/ShitAmericansSay sub and the fact that you post on different subs located in and around Europe. Not to mention the attitude you came into this post with.
If you want to get a math degree, unless you go to a gigantic school you're just not going to be able to schedule in 4-5 math classes your first couple semesters. A lot of classes are ran at the same time, and unlike large universities, the majority of colleges across the US still have a classroom format - like something you would find in a highschool.
On top of that, a lot of the more technical degrees require prerequisite classes. So like if you have to take a Color and Design Class for your degree, you have to take Drawing 1 first - and obviously you can't take them both at once. Eventually scheduling problems, classes filling up, and prerequisites meet in the middle, and you're left with holes in your schedule that you literally HAVE to fill to legally be considered a full-time student, which like I said before is extremely important for financial reasons.
So instead of having a gap you have elective credits, where you can basically take anything you want. For example I took CPR and got CPR and AED certified while doing art courses. Does CPR have anything to do with art? No, but it filled my schedule.
At the end of the day as long as someone is learning everything legally required to earn their degree, it shouldn't matter if they take other classes on the side. In fact it's better for literally everyone involved that they do. The school gets more money, the students get to go full-time, and on top of that the students could potentially stumble upon a new path if they find interest in an elective class.
Also, for the record i'm not guilty of anything. I never assumed how universities work where you live, I just said how they work where I live.
[–]Chaquita_Banana 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Yes it’s possible you might need one art credit in your math degree. No it’s not just a high school thing. Most of these things would probably happen in your first or second semester I imagine.
[–]CohnDev 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yup exactly, your first couple semesters there are a lot of classes that require pre-requisite classes, and if those fill up you have to take something in order to still be attending full time.
For example my sister went for English, but took both a Chinese and a Gender Studies class, and I went for art and took multiple science and math classes.
[–]Chaquita_Banana 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeahs it’s incredibly common idk why this guy is so assertive and angry about this
[–]TheRumpelForeskin -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Insane. Well I can at least categorically state that none of this is ever a thing in any university in either the UK or France.
I also wouldn't hire someone who claims they have a degree in a subject but spent a third of their time attending classes in random, unrelated and trivial things instead.
[–]Chaquita_Banana 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Idk where you got a third from, it’s like 2 classes tops out of an entire degrees worth of classes.

[–]Chav -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
School doesn't work like that. If you were enrolled at one, you should take university studies as an elective.
[–]TheRumpelForeskin -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
We're talking about university, not high school. You study one subject for a degree and have many different related classes for it. I had a few optional classes in my final year before graduating last year but all of them were obviously business related. Because it's a business degree. That's what you pay for.
[–]Chav 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
You're full of shit and anyone that's been to a university will know it. No one's talking about high school. Someone with a business degree doesn't just take business classes to get one.
[–]TheRumpelForeskin -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Yeah I'm not entertaining this anymore.
Someone with a business degree doesn't just take business classes to get one.
Listen to yourself. You sound like a blithering retard.
Although I was one of the few people that did do another subject, it was because it was in the literal name of the degree. International Business and French, so some business classes were taught in French and some classes were straight up French classes that joined some of the classes of people doing a French degree. It's not common to have a degree in 2 things at once like me though.
[–]Chav -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Then you're talking about something from a place that you clearly don't understand. In other countries, coursework isn't completely limited to your program.
[–]TheRumpelForeskin 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I never mentioned any place, I'm not talking about any place. The post doesn't talk about a place. The basic structure of a degree as I explained is like that in at least 90% of countries. You've assigned a place or specific university to this.
In Iran and nowhere else, Thursday and Friday is the weekend. If I mention Saturday as being in the weekend you don't start saying "naw it's Thursday because of Iran"
[–]Chav -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
We're talking about gender studies. Do those non place have that course? I bet we're talking about that percentage of places where it exists. Feigning astonishment that something exists somewhere in the world while clearly talking about something in the US is a favorite pastime of your type.

[–]dmckidd 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Blumpkinatur 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There is nothing legitimately useful about a class like that.

My prediction is that it was a political fad that arose as a direct consequence of Trump. A dramatic over-compensation of bastardized left wing ideals to combat right wing politics.
I believe within 3 years people will return to their senses and we can all put this nonsense behind us.
[–]Corona-and-Lyme 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Where were you at for the past like 10 years that it was steadily growing? It isn't new at all.
It isn’t new but it also wasn’t popular. It certainly had little to no mainstream popularity.
[–]Corona-and-Lyme 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Eh, it's just that it was mostly contained to college campuses back then, but now all of those students are out in the world with the rest of us
[–]J5892 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link
I'm assuming you discovered the internet in 2016, because that's really the only possible reason you would think gender spectrums became a thing because of Trump.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link
For younger people who we’re using websites like Tumblr perhaps but it wasn’t mainstream at all. It will go out of fashion because it is no longer relevant and it is also just so wrong in so many levels, and so absurdly bad as a problem solving framework.
[–]J5892 -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago* (17 children) | Copy Link
It was mainstream on Tumblr in 2008. It entered the cultural zeitgeist somewhere around 2010-2014.
And just the fact that you're calling it a "problem solving framework" tells me that you've made absolutely no effort to understand the issue beyond thinking "More than two genders? That sounds gay."
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link
If something is “mainstream” on Tumblr in 2008, it is not mainstream.
I’m describing it as a political tool. But I think it is useless for whatever purpose it thinks it serves as well.
[–]J5892 -3 points-2 points-1 points 5 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link
That was my point. It was mainstream on Tumblr in 2008. It entered the actual mainstream sometime after 2008, but well before 2016.
And as for purpose, the only reason one would think it's useless is if they either: 1. Know absolutely nothing about it. or 2. Completely lack the ability to feel empathy.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link
I disagree. I think I’m. Compassionate person i just believe that obsessing over race and gender haven’t helped our society. They have helped divide it.
Martin Luther King was right.
[–]Poopeepi 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago* (24 children) | Copy Link
Why is this a thing? How many genders can a person be anyway? Can I be 29% man and 71% woman? Can I identify as female legs and male arms?
Edit : to the person who commented after me, thanks for the clarification. It just seems that i dont think it should be a necessity to have it as a degree in college (?) Idk you dont see the “straight man course” in university and these things should have been more of a common sense rather than something to be taught?
Sorry for my ignorance though, i live in a predominantly traditional country so we do not have these things
[–]UnholyDemigod -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Gender and sex are now seen as different things. Your sex is your biological makeup, as characterised by your chromosomes. You get a Y chromosome, you're a fella. 2 Xs? You're a chick.
Your gender is the sex that your brain thinks you are. You wake in the morning and expect to see a cock between your legs, and there is one? You're fine. You expect to see one, and there isn't? That's called gender dysphoria, and that's what transgender people have. The currently only accepted treatment is acceptance and transitioning - hormone treatments, sex change surgery, etc.
Easiest way to remember: sex, body. Gender, brain.
[–]Blumpkinatur 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It’s a trend now.
[–]Opiumbrella33 -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Seen as separate by SOME people. Many people feel this ideology is seriously regressive, homophobic, misogynistic, and otherwise toxic to society. Especially for women and LGB people. Woman is a word for the adult female. Women are a sex class not a gender identity. Gender is the oppressive stereotypes and expectations places on people because of their sex. Two different things yes. But inextricably linked. And when you separate them you get things like male rapists in female prisons, the utter demolition of women's spaces, rights, boundaries, and identity both socially and in law. You get heterosexual males claiming both womanhood and lesbianism. And then shaming, berating, and belittling lesbian women who don't want to have a male a sexual partner. Homosexuals being told their same axe attraction is bigoted and needs to be unlearned, that they should be attracted based on someone's inner sense of their gender. That is homophobic AF. not to mention the abuse and silencing and threatening any women who dare to speak out about this.
People with gender dysphoria deserve help and compassion. That doesn't mean redefining other vulnerable groups, putting them at risk of harm, and removing their rights. Not to mention that trans is now an umbrella term according to every major trans organization now. It includes people with dysphoria, crossdressers, males with autogynephilia (a fetish) and anyone who says they are trans. And this again, is leading to horrible effects for women.
[–]apsgreek -3 points-2 points-1 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You probably do have things like this in your country but there isn’t a way to talk about it/acknowledge it. Either due to norms or lack of language/terms.

They talk about the concept that gender is not the same thing as sex and therefore you can have more than 70 genders, like gay, lesbian, bi, trans, pansexual, agenender, nonbinary, multsexual and more, with some of them having special 3rd person pronouns.
[–]smartguy05 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]andy2002andrei -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I'm from Romania which is a very Conservative country, like they are barely normalising gays so there are some misconceptions about the topic which I'm willing to correct. First step in correcting a mistake is realising you are wrong.
[–]joshrealer 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Gay, lesbians, bi are all sexual preferences, not gender or sex. Sexual preference is the gender or sex you’re attracted to. Even though sex and gender are used interchangeably most of the time, these are not academically the same thing.
Sex is biological, it’s what you’re assigned at birth. Male, female, intersex are all sexes. This is something you cannot change. You get what you’re born with.
Gender, however is not biological. It most of the time has a biological influence, most males identify as a man, but is not always the case. Gender is a social construct. It’s how people choose(or not choose, idk) to identify them as. It’s the role you choose to play in society.
You can be born as a biological female, and you can’t change your sex, you’ll still remain biologically a female in terms of sex. But you can change what you identify as in terms of gender. You may be more comfortable identifying as a man in society.
If you still need some clarification, this video may help you...

I believe it's a subtype of sociology.
[–]AFlyingNun -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
BUT WHY???
Like legit: what can gender studies teach that biology and psychology would not achieve? It seems like actively electing to learn a shittier, dumbed down version of biology/psychology with a much more limited spectrum because you feel like wasting money.
Like nevermind the lack of job opportunities; if someone really wants to learn something about gender, it feels like biology/psychology can teach all that and more, so wtf.
[–]idiomaddict 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
But that’s how specializing works. It’s like asking why someone would study electrical engineering when they could just study physics and learn about a broader array of topics than just electrical engineering. Gender studies are helpful for things like understanding how to get a more inclusive workplace/appealing to more applicants, so there is a strong desire for people with that type of background at least in my financial services industry and in the engineering firms I’m familiar with.

Tbf in this particular instance Gender Studies from the domain of Sociology isn't at all anything more than ideology and pseudoscience masquerading as a science.
If this person plays their cards right they will end up in marketing for Apple, CocaCola etc.. Doesn't matter what you think about it it's a sought after field.
Also gender studies includes both genders technically, so that's on you for being sexist and assuming only women can be in that field of 'study.'

[–]ShagBitchesGetRiches 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Thats not gender studies, the branch of sociology, though. That's neuroscience.

This is a fake burn from an incels fantasy, not a thesis on the merits of gender studies degrees.
Everything we read and have ever been taught is male studies. It’s amazing to me that the thought of women’s studies being so offensive to the men on this subreddit. Women’s studies isn’t for you. You don’t have to get it. It doesn’t make it worth or a waste of time. Without this we wouldn’t have so many rights for women. Plus you can have jobs in advocacy, law offices, campaigns, student services, and help rape victims. So someone getting that degree could be saving lives. CHECK YOURSELF.

A) This is probably a joke B) I'd be shocked if more than a handful of people in this comment section had ever taken Gender Studies class C) I work in consumer insights and a Gender Studies degree would be a more than qualifying concentration for our field

Imagine being this miserable defending bigotry.
A bigot is someone who is unreasonable attached to a belief. I understand that this is a triggerword that you'll use a lot so I might as well let you know the definition.
Someone who calls stupid people stupid and doesn't share your stupid opinion is not a bigot. No matter how much it huwts your feewings.

This has nothing to do with incels. It has to do with some privileged enough to be in college demeaning a subway worker. Keep seething, nobody will fall for your diversion to incels for some reason, except maybe yourself.

I took gender studies with a focus on women in the arts and it was really a great course. Oddly enough a hippie male professor instructed the class but I learned much more from that class than any other elective in college.

I don't know anything about 'gender studies' but idiotic conservatives demonize social sciences aswell, they prefer to take decisions based on gut feeling, which is why the US is so underdeveloped compared to countries where social sciences are actually respected.

Aren't gender studies graduates working as Chief Diversity Officer etc in huge corps making $200k+ later? People who propagate diversity, which you see a lot, probably have formal education in that, so this means there is a market for that.
[–]harrisonfire 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No.
There are roughly 100-150 “chief diversity officer” positions in the entire world. The rest of the gender study graduates become professors or work as administrators if they’re lucky to benefit from the pyramid scheme, and the vast majority are screwed for majoring in gender studies.
probs have to be able to spell the word sandwich prior to earning 200k
