Off topic, but for mobile, typing “xtra” is actually more convenient than typing “extra”. The repeated action of the left thump moving to E, X, and T is a rapid triple tap action, makes the thumb more tired. Whereas X to T causes less strain.

I was required to take one in college. Everyone that was male was docked 10% or so. My final was a series of essays, one of which was to explain how I discriminate against women, LGBT, minorities, and poor people daily. I wrote a sarcastic essay about how I objectify women by holding their hands in public, which also insults gays by implying only straight relationships are valid, and I wear nice clothes to insult poor people. Oh, and of course I only date people I'm attracted to, which happen to be almost exclusively white women, implying that black is not beautiful. Got an A on that essay.
Edit: I just got banned from r/twobraincells for this. Despite already being told I was banned by a mod for telling them not to just vote for someone for having a vagina.

I ended up studying a bit of sociology, basically because I'd stopped and started a couple of different courses and that was the quickest way to get my degree. I assume it's fairly similar, anyway, long story short it was pretty stupid - basically political indoctrination, as opposed to actual "science". If you want to get a good grade just repeat the rhetoric when you write your essays, don't put your own spin or opinions into it.
[–]RestinSchrott 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Sociology and gender studies are very different because many gender studies scholar reject the scientific method (which sociology follows). You probably went to a themed sociology class: students get a range of classes, including tons of stats & methodology as it is hard to make good sociology. They also learns about typical sociology findings (which you learnt)
[+]Baybob1 -13 points-12 points-11 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Well, you certainly didn't "learnt" any English ... If you go to school again and take some classes other than Sociology, maybe you can "learns" that ...
[–]horusporcus 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm guessing that English isn't your strong point, eh?
[–]CNeutral 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
"Learnt" is a completely valid alternative to "Learned". Also, ellipses are not a general replacement for periods at the end of a sentence, nor a replacement for semicolons to join two clauses.
You might be more aware of this if you go to school again and enroll in some more English courses.

Why? To be ridiculed for being what your genetics forced you to be? These classes are for pathetic beings who are looking to find someone to blame for their vapid, pathetic lives besides themselves. The problem with a victim lifestyle is that you never get to improve yourself and make your life better. It's always someone else's fault ...

[–]Common_Wedding 29 points30 points31 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
The problem is gender studies is a made up subject. During the 1970's universities in response to feminism gaining popularity basically created a new subject overnight. This created an ideological gold rush where you could shout any rubbish and suddenly have it be apart of academia.
This is why actually interesting studies are placed next to "why air conditioning is sexist", "dogs sniffing each other is an example of patriarchy led rape culture" and "maybe we should chain up white male children in schools because fuck em"
[+]strandedintime -11 points-10 points-9 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Nah the problem is blatant unapologetic misogyny. Every 'study' is a made up subject.
If you have a problem with conclusions being drawn (air condition being sexist can be argued against very easily in my opinion) then argue against them. To rail against an entire study just paints you as a man terrified of hearing anything negative about themselves. And as a man, I can tell you we don't need that shit. Be a man and stop downvoting people who critisize you. Have a discussion. Or you WILL look weak to the 'ideological gold miners' and now we're all trying to explain why boneheaded chumps like you don't typify the male mind. Tl;dr Hold yourself to your oen standards and stop being the manbaby that women would like to make fun of. Be a man worthy of respect.
[–]Baybob1 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s just a petty jab to make themselves feel better. At the heart of it, they’re miserable. All the gender studies crowd are just insecure women who try and hide their insecurity by being super man hating and turbo independent. When I first went to college a few years ago I was talking (pre-romantically) with a girl who was one of those types and it shocked her how much we got along since I’m a fairly right wing trump supporting gun nut. We spent a lot of time together and she said I made her feel safe and supported, which she didn’t feel often. She broke down crying and told me “I’m only so feminist and vocal because I’m terrified that I need a man to function and I’m supposed to be more than that. If I don’t have a man around I feel scared” etc. needless to say her and I didn’t work out, she had leftover feelings for an ex who I told off for not building up he confidence. She’s fallen further off the deep end, she’s fairly pretty and naturally feminine and all her female friends are the types of women you’d find in gender studies classes. Some have deeper voices than most of the men I know but they’re still biologically female lol. Whenever I see her around campus wearing feminist shit or writing stuff in chalk about women’s rights or at a booth promoting the gender studies course, I can only imagine if she’s ever reached her inner peace. Or if she’s still insecure and lonely and craving male validation. It’s sad.
[–]Bonkies1 25 points26 points27 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Wow that's super sad.. :( honestly I don't understand why people think being dependent is such a bad thing. It's so not okay that they will try their hardest to convince themselves that they're independent and live a life of denial..
[–]JoJoReferences 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Her parents had a messy divorce and I think it’s always been about them, I don’t think she got the familial love so she looked outwards. I had a semi-similar situation but I grew out of it by mid high school
Probably because of what happens if the person you're dependent on leaves you one day, or can't support you anymore. It's one of the reasons if I had kids, I wouldn't want to be a stay-at-home parent. My mom wanted to be one, but my sister's father decided fatherhood wasn't for him and he didn't want to raise another man's child (me), so she was on her own. For that reason, she drilled independence into mine and my sister's head because she didn't want to see us like that.
My point with that story is the people who believe being dependent is bad don't say it for no reason. And I have seen the result of it in my family in more ways than one.
All that said, I do have a boyfriend who I'm dependent on (and vice versa), but that didn't happen until we actually became a couple. We're both clingy as all hell to each other.

I promise it happened man. I think it’s sad that people need validation from others to find any semblance of happiness. Men and women should be a team, and lean on each other when they need to. I don’t like the competitive aspect. Sometimes I fuck up and break down and I need to lean on my gf for help, sometimes it’s the other way around. But being truly and totally reliant on someone else, or feeling like you have to be, is sad and I think it’s an issue for young people today

You’re so close then! Now all you have to do is enroll in such a course and you could prove to us all that sociology is a made up discipline and any chump can walk out with an A!
You won’t do that, of course. It’s enough for me to know that you’ll always be filled with impotent rage about women instead of just, I don’t know, proving your case?
[–]JoJoReferences 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
My major is criminal justice, which is within the sociology program... that’s how I met the girl, through sociology classes. it’s not a made up discipline, lots of the classes are quite hard. I don’t know what you’re trying to argue? I have no impotent rage towards women, I’m dating one, I was raised by one who raised me alone and did a great job... I’m saying the women and gender studies aspects of sociology are full of people who are insecure and trying to prove something to themselves and others.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Speaking of impotent rage...
[–]furry_trash69 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
That was probably the worst thing I've ever read. I've never seen so many words used to say so little. It's just a bunch of vague buzzwords without any substance. It uses the same extreme language to describe every single issue, and it completely cheapens the word "oppression" to the point where it loses all meaning. There's no hard definitions of any of the words used; they just mean whatever the author wants them to mean at any given time, usually for emotional shock value. I knew gender studies was bad, but I didn't realize it was that bad. Now I'm absolutely certain that gender studies has no place in academia. It's a complete mockery of what is supposed to be an institution of knowledge. If gender studies wants to be taken seriously, then they should clean up their act and take it seriously themselves.
[–]Tttttttttt83-3 points 4 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

Yes, there are problems in the world and I'm glad there are people who are engaged in the process, but when you see protests and there are people screaming in each other's faces, I can't help but think it isn't about the actual issue for them
I think that’s a reasonable and interesting take.

It happened, honestly. I have a long term girlfriend I’m very happy with and my grades are good etc. I don’t need any validation. The whole point was the girl I used to talk to needed it so bad it drove her entire life decisions. People have a hard time feeling happy without help from others and I think it’s sad
[+][deleted] -10 points-9 points-8 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I don’t think she was scared of not having validation of a man. I think she is scared of not having validation on her own merits. She wants her own independence. She wants to be valued by her own person and not of an authority figure.
There’s nothing wrong with feminism. Im not gonna deny that some feminist are anti men and turbo hating or whatever that means but that’s a small, looked down upon group. Most feminist are good and mean well.
[–]JoJoReferences 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

She could compartmentalize her own insecurities to frame acceptance from someone she is safe with. I don’t think it means she isn’t a feminist for other reasons.
Plus, she’s in college. I’m not sure the time lapse here but it’s possible she has developed deeper meaning for her stance on feminism, at least I hope she has if what you say is true and happened.
I wouldn’t know, we quit talking. But I still see her around. And I agreed the end of my first comment was “I hope she found some peace” she’s said a lot of shit that I find funny, like “I think transgenderism is a mental disorder but if I say that to my friends they’ll cancel me” completely unironically. It was like a glimpse into another world. Last time I saw her she was giving a trans rights presentation for a class and I got bonus points for one of my sociology classes for going

The difference between gender studies and literature is that one course will teach you facts and the other will teach you mostly feelings. You can certainly debate the efficacy of learning facts about literature, but at least you're learning SOMEthing. Gender studies is really just a great big pile of offense and supposition with a few statistics sprinkled in.

Literature degree is like the definition of studying opinions.
What experience with gender degree curriculum do you have? Outside of tweets about its stupidity, of course?
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
My experience with gender studies curricula is that all of the people touting their degrees in it have absolutely nothing factual or valuable to say.
And that is enough for me, because I think it's the result of education from the mouths of its students that ultimately matters. I'm certainly not going to attend any gender studies courses in order to confirm it. I attended a Women's Studies course once in my early college days and that was bad enough.
[–]HellaBrainCells -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I agree that I don’t think gender studies stands very strongly on its own as a degree anymore. At the very least it’s not very marketable. However, I have no confidence that you have any real experience with the major or research related to the field due to the fact you state that you took one class in your early college years and that was it. The way you keep speaking in vague generalities leads me to believe you actually know very little about it. I don’t even believe you took a class in it yet you stooped down low enough to call out spelling, of all things, for the most cliche jab of all time at a college major. Old unoriginal misogynistic men make these kind of jokes and every fucktard with a small dick hops on the bandwagon despite how clearly not clever it is. Some of the research attributed to those in the field of gender studies has been invaluable. Just because someone got a degree in a field that isn’t as marketable as a stem degree doesn’t inherently make that person unintelligent either.
Ah, here comes the misogyny accusation. I was waiting for that. Hey, why don't you just call me an incel too? I know you want to.
Calling out abysmal spelling in a college setting is completely valid. If you don't understand why, then I can't possibly expect much from you.
If you're not convinced by my experiences, then you should check out some of the other comments here. There are people with firsthand experience with gender studies. And I will say again that any college course that considers taking pictures of men making sandwiches a legitimate assignment is a complete waste of time.
Deal with it.

I've taken history classes by feminist professors who orient the class with a lens for gender and I've spoken to people minoring in gender studies. My best friend is non-binary. They're just people, even if you disagree with them. Some are nice to talk to and some aren't. The only thing that unites them is an interest in gender as it presents itself across time, cultures, and political systems.

Gender identity
Gender identity is the personal sense of one's own gender. Gender identity can correlate with assigned sex at birth or can differ from it. All societies have a set of gender categories that can serve as the basis of the formation of a person's social identity in relation to other members of society. In most societies, there is a basic division between gender attributes assigned to males and females, a gender binary to which most people adhere and which includes expectations of masculinity and femininity in all aspects of sex and gender: biological sex, gender identity, and gender expression. Some people do not identify with some, or all, of the aspects of gender assigned to their biological sex; some of those people are transgender, non-binary or genderqueer.

No I mean giving the women in the picture credit. You're right though, literally anyone or older can get a job at Subway.

Nothing against equal rights and non hateful feminism but what is the point of getting a degree in women’s studies? Like why go to school for specialized education in that?
I have lots of things I’m interested in on a personal basis but I majored in an actual skill set (accounting) not because I love accounting but because it’s something you need specialized education in.
[–]MartelFirst 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The only possible jobs which could specifically require a gender studies degree is either teacher of gender studies, independent blogger, or consultant (perhaps in HR) on female or transgender issues. Hell, there may be some woke businesses which may find this valuable... until they go broke, but that's another story. :p

There are legitimate careers and some people just would rather care about having a fun job and making a living wage over making extra money.
[+]Chuffnell -10 points-9 points-8 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Firstly, women’s studies and gender studies are different. Secondly, it’s not a specialised degree, but a broad one in a RAPIDLY expanding field.
I did a google search for “gender studies career” and this is literally the first hit.

[–]SaturdaysAFTBs 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Nothing against people getting those degrees but it just seems like a bad ROI. You spend all this money on education and invest the time and at the end of it have a degree in a field that doesn’t really pay well and is questionable in terms of demand
[–]Chuffnell -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link
Well, from a US perspective I get you. It might be bad ROI from a monetary standpoint. If I lived in the US I'd also consider that more. However, there are many countries where you do not pay money for a University Education, essentially negating the ROI argument.
But even if we look at the US, and you pick a field based on where you'll make the most money rather than what you're passionate about, how likely are you to succeed? I think we have to judge theoretical ROI vs actual ROI. Finance might have a high theoretical ROI but a person who's really passionate about studying the early agricultural methods of ancient Mesopotamia will probably get a higher ROI from doing just that rather than going into finance. Their actual ROI is higher from doing ancient history because that's what they're good at and what they enjoy.
There are plenty of people who don't chose an occupation based on where they can make the most money. And I think the world would be much more boring if everyone only went for maximum ROI. And besides, there are many degrees where the potential monetary ROI is just as bad, but do not get even half as much shit as gender studies does. Not like you're going to earn heaps of money with a degree in history either.
Edit: And also, I think we can say with some confidence that the demand for people with these kind of degrees is growing.
Edit again: And just a quick clarification before there are any misconceptions. My degree is in marketing :)
[–]SaturdaysAFTBs 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Studying women’s studies so you can then teach it is a circular loop. If you’re passionate about Mesopotamian agriculture then study on your own time as an interest. I have lots of things I read about because I’m interested (WW2 history, for example). But majoring in that would be a waste.
Studying women’s studies so you can then teach it is a circular loop.
Only if you go on to teach in it. You could also do one of these jobs at the UN, for example:
https://unjobs.org/themes/gender-analysis
If you’re passionate about Mesopotamian agriculture then study on your own time as an interest. I have lots of things I read about because I’m interested (WW2 history, for example). But majoring in that would be a waste.
If everyone had your approach to education you wouldn't be able to read about WW2 history. You're able to buy books about Heinz Guderian and his role in the development of the Blitzkrieg because there are people who chose to study something they're passionate about, rather than what gives them optimal ROI.
But majoring in that would be a waste.
The point is that it might seem like a waste to you, but that doesn't make the choice any less valid, nor does it make the degree useless.

Does a gender studies thesis consist of, "This one has a penis, and this one has a vagina. When one has a penis, then they are male. When one has a vagina, then they are female."
You forgot;
“The ones with the penises are the devil”!
Actually a gender studies course doesn't teach you this at all. It teaches that is in fact not the case because gender and sex are nothing to do with each other, apparently.

gender studies is a valid study/interest to get a degree in.
after you've acquired a means to support yourself.
much like theoretical mathematics.
its very fun but rarely substantial
[–][deleted] 22 points23 points24 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

learning that biology is a lie and there are infinite genders out there , totally valid to have a major in delusional thinking
[–]furrtaku_joe -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link
i think gender is more of a psychological phenomenon rather than a biological one.
and its not so much that there are infinite genders as much as the way that gender roles form in different cultures arround the world is very unpredictable.
african females have a different sociological role than European females, who have a different set of roles from native American or north asian females, etc.
and the same applies to males of those cultures
in some societies even the clothing types don't conform to western standards in terms of what we think a male or female should wear.
gendered names also don't always align with our standards (sasha being a name that can be considered normal for Russian males)
and yes it also studies things like dysphoria which is a type of altered mental state.
which includes physical dysphoria and gender dysphoria wherein a person through some as of yet not understood quirk of their psychology will either disassociate with their body, their sociological roles, or often both.
for the time being we don't know enough about the brain to give them a neurosurgical option nor do we have any medications that can quell this mental state
so for now our best alternative is to alter the body.
much in the way one does in cosmetic surgery, piercing, tattooing, or other forms of bodily modification.
[–]Mortarion978 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Fun fact, in my language (Romanian) there is no word for gender except for words (grammar thing, lol). You know why we only have the word sex to describe a person in a context of male female etc? Because sex and gender are the same fucking thing, male or female,we started with 2,we're fucking ending it in 2.
[–]furrtaku_joe 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
and that's completely normal in your culture.
there's nothing wrong with being a non gendered society in fact i think that is a good goal for the world to eliminate the idea of gender entirely.
the idea that males or females must be a certain way or like certain things. or that they must not be a certain way or must dislike certain things.
it is a foolish idea
and i think the only real way to be rid of gender once and for all is to study the phenomena, eliminate its cause and be done with it.
no man, no woman, only sex.
and once that is over we will find alternative solutions for sexual dysphoria that are both humane and effective.
[–]Mortarion978 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
i think we need to eliminate the idea that destroying the current society is a good idea, a society that has been feeding people for forever. But no, men and women roles bad, don't mind that since people started enforcing other roles, mind you, on men and women that the world has slowly started to go into a bad place. Nah, let's just keep forcing people to deny their nature
[–]furrtaku_joe 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
no one is forcing anyone to be different.
some females like short hair, jeans, and muted or cool colors some males like dresses and warm vibrant colors
some females like the company of females some males like the company of males
it has been that way for many hundreds of years and has been a part of every major empire
but that is too much for you to cope with.
high heals and makeup were developed in france and were used primarily by men in high society
stories from long ago speak of women who were huntsman and scholars
in some societies everyone wore the same sort of clothing because it was all they could afford and they were ok with that.
in the 1920s males were ok with being effeminate
it is only recently with the advent of our modern society that anyone really bothers with other people
and no one has been more nosy or led to the collapse of more society's than Christianity.

Gender studies isn't just "man hating: the course" it focuses on everything related to gender, including the issues men have. So, if it's being taught that way either someone's just lying about their class (more likely) or there's a wildly unprofessional professor.
