Saying you are a computer geek IS the cool way to answer the question.

If you think that being "geeky" is lame, then that feeling will resonate, and other people will think so too. But that is the thing... being a computer geek means you are king in the world of the future, and even the world of today.

If the girls thinks your useful, commercially desirable interests are unattractive, then she is stupid and you don't want anything to do with her.

Don't make it your main point, I'm an engineering student and I don't bring it up until asked, I make it a point to let her see I'm fun before letting her on to being a sort of nerd. Even so I used my ME background to enhance my fun, like I would use it to ease my way into how I built a stripper pole for my dorm, designing it to fit into housing regulations and what not.

I'd probably answer, though. Sneets is right - answer with passion. Why do you (hopefully) love your job? Is it the creativity of writing new programs? The challenge of problem solving?

Don't worry about the nerd image. For one, handsome nerds and geek chic have gained their own respected spot in today's popular culture. Either rock it with pride, or be a "closet nerd" like me. In fact, you can use her response to filter cool accepting women from closed-minded ones. Secondly, when I tell girls I'm an engineer, the most common reaction is awe. Now they feel the need to qualify themselves to me. It's a nice feeling : )

I used to work in sales for a software company and when people asked me what I did I just said "I work for a tech company." To many people that sounds cool, plus it makes them think you make more money than you probably do since "tech" has become synonymous with multibillion dollar companies.

If it's the first time you're talking to a girl, avoid or distort the answer if possible. I have NEVER had my job pick up interest, and I'm in a similar field. The only exception is if you're at like an engineer/computer-oriented place.

How do you avoid the question? Either turn the question back on her or try to change the subject.

How do you distort? Either make up outrageous claims about your own job or pick another similar or entirely different job and make up a whole crazy narrative for this. In any good distortion there is a hint of truth. Try to imagine yourself writing a fun, interesting comic book version of your job.

Edit: It's also important to note distortion comes after she presses you on the subject. This creates a playful atmosphere when you answer. So if you do get a date out of it later, you can tell her what you actually do and laugh about how she thought you had that ridiculous job.

As a college student, I just say that I'm getting a degree in Engineering with confidence and that almost always displays alpha qualities when meeting new people. Most people I've met are genuinely impressed by engineers, and on more than one occasion I've met women who have relatives that are engineers. Additionally, you can use your own momentum of speaking passionately about your career path to find out what she is passionate about. This further opens up options for conversations regarding what women want to do with their life, and it makes you much more interesting in conversations.

There is an incredible tapestry of lights and radio energy that cris crosses every city like the finest tartan. built of a glass fibres so fine thinner than angel hair pasta and al of this above the dull urban hum radiates out like a cacophony of birdsong in a rainforest canopy. each knowing how to harmonize their song and who to dedicate it to every time you forward a funny picture from your iphone or call your mom just to say hey from 2 continents away, your "hey mom" is being bounced out into space and back. i make that happen and i love the magic it is.

Do not answer the question, its a shit test. I used to make things up and have fun with it. These days if a girl asks me what I do I usually dodge the question.

If your surrounded by people that spend all day talking about their jobs (NYC for instance) just learn to avoid those people because your about to be in for a vapid conversation. If someone has any substance at all just tell them your an engineer and it should be fine. To impress people I answer back with a project I've worked on recently that's mega cool without going too deep into it, or I say something like "I make anything possible for the right price".
