Unless you carry this style with a great deal of confidence then I think it comes off as try-hard. Ladies might get the impression that you are overcompensating for insecurities with this look. But if you feel like a million bucks in it and dont give a fuck about haters and you experience some success, i say go for it-as long as you feel comfortable and that you are expressing a fun version of yourself, not reaching to be something that you're not

If you're English, I wouldn't recommend wearing those trousers in certain parts of London. Red trousers, especially red velvet trousers, are mostly worn by middle/upper class people with too much money trying too hard to be "cool".

To me, styles like this are akin to punk fashion (among dozens of other types of fashion I should add). I don't mean this referring to punk style as a fashion (eg kids trying to be cool by adopting punk aesthetics into their wardrobe), I'm including the die-hard punks in this group as well. This style, and most found in r/malefashionadvice, is, in my opinion, nothing more than a costume. I don't think of it as "dressing nice," I think of it as a specific niche fashion.

I used punk as my example because an old roommate of mine, a great guy from Atlanta, was a punk (the grimy kind). One of the greatest things I heard him say was that he doesn't dress up for Halloween because he wears a costume every day. I appreciated that he recognized that his style of dress was a fashion, one that could be considered "dressing up." No, it didn't include dress shoes, button ups, or ties, or much less ascots, but it's dressing up to satisfy a certain make-believe ideal. And that's what I think this is: make believe.

Of course, I assume this is recognized as there's a name for it. So all in all, keep doing what you do.

Most of those pieces are fantastic; but the whole deal is clearly more wrapped up in fantasy than a true expression of who you are. It's as if you want to be bold, but haven't quite found it in yourself yet, so you're clinging to a story instead of letting boldness radiate from within you. It's not that far off from little boys running around with towels around their necks, playing superman.

When it comes to peacocking, I'd opt for sophisticated, celebratory, and authentic any time over pretentious, desperate, and costumey.

The question is: does one have the skill to do it for real? If not, then self-lampooning is the alternative.
