I've been divorced for a year, and one of the things sinking in now is how alone I am. Enjoying solitude as an introvert can be enjoyable, but this is different. It's not about being by myself for a while by choice. It's that nobody in the world cares about me. Both my parents are dead. I have no siblings, no family anymore. I used to have many friends, but when I got married and became a dad, I lost touch and stopped making new friends. All I've got are a few acquaintances who live in cities hundreds of miles away.

During the marriage, life got too busy tending to my wife and child. My wife, through consuming my time, caused me to neglect friendships. She also convinced me to cut off a few friends she didn't like. Her friends became my only friends. Now all of them are gone and her entire family ostracized me in the divorce. Some showed up to help her move out, and even tried to testify against my character in court. I truly have no one left on my side.

This is something I can overcome, I don't know how. At times when I am alone in my house, I am enjoying the time to myself but depressing thoughts hit me. For example, if I had a medical issue and needed help or just dropped dead, nobody would know and nobody would come to help me. There is no one I can count on. Not a friend to drive me home if I drank to much at a bar. No one to fetch my computer from my house if I ended up in the hospital for a few nights. There are the people I know from work, but I don't know if they count as friends because I have to remain professional with them.

Is this a familiar feeling to anyone else going through this?
