I went to an engineering meeting in my school, and they were discussing employment for engineers; they are still peddling this myth despite women in engineering and technical fields earning between 105% to 150% [Can't seem to find it per salary] men's salaries. I have to find the link for it, but needless to say I was displeased and vocal about the lies they were spreading.

I was asked not to return to any future meetings, which really got me going.

The statistic that yields the 22 cent pay gap is intentionally misleading. It is calculated by finding the mean earnings of males and of females, then normalizing for male pay.

However, there is a more meaningful statistic for real wage discrimination. It is calculated as such:

For each job type, find the mean pay of male workers and female workers, adjusting for merit and tenure. Find the ratio of adjusted men's pay to adjusted women's pay for each job type. Find the mean of these ratios for all job types. This is the mean pay discrepancy between women and men in the same job type with the same merit and the same tenure. This is called controlling for relevant factors.

Yeah, the statistic was scholarly debunked. But, that just means that the methodology used to find that particular stat was wrong. The most accurate stats still indicate a small gap.

Weakens families? what has weakened families is teh fact that both peopel in a couple have to work, there is only six week maternity leave, no paternity leave, and the child during the most important years of it's life (birth to 2ish) doesn't get the attention it needs for a very good development.

The most damaging thing to families was women going to work and while stay at home dads continued to be vilified.

In my place of work, women are almost exclusively in the Clerical Bargaining Unit, which is compensated significantly less than the Operational Bargaining Unit.

The OBU contains female members, who are compensated at the same rate schedule as the male members. The CBU contains male members, who are compensated at the same rate schedule as female members.

How is this in any way discriminatory? Your unwillingness to sweat and get dirty, which is a requirement or hazard of almost all OBU jobs, equates to lower compensation.

It's not about gender, it's about paper pushers making less money than pipe turners.

Salary is one of the largest expense for an organization.

If an owner could reduce this expense by 25%, or even 5%, and receive the same level productivity, they would hire women. This cost saving would translate to higher profits.

It's about greed, not discrimination.

let's assume the wage gap is true for a hot second.

take that and apply it to this sentiment. what's a further insult is that obama assumes that if women are making 77 cents to a man's dollar (again we know this is false, but just follow me here for a second), that we can't support ourselves, our families, our kids will suffer, the economy will collapse and the terrorists will win.

if i were partnered up, with a family to support, or with children, or all of the above, i'd spend less money on bullshit, cut corners if necessary, make sure i was supporting our lives and not extravagant lifestyles (often the issue with people who are "broke"), and spend every free second furthering my career skills to that i'd be more marketable.

The sad truth of this is that Obama, like most every politician in our system, gets his information from lobbyists hired by special interest groups. While politicians typically hear from SIG's from both sides of the argument, the more powerful, popular one is more likely to get representation. (of course you could argue this with Obama's recent statements on marijuana)

What we probably have here is Obama making a statement based on information given to him by a lobbyist from one of the Women's Rights SIG's.
