Life skills - Basic knowledge on home maintenance, finance/taxes, car care (if applicable), etc.
Interests - Your interests help you stay connected to yourself, and contribute to your feelings of competence
Money - See OP
Identity - You are more than your relationships to others. You are not just supporting cast. You are not limited to being someone's sister or mother or wife. Your identity is important.
Transportation - Never live in a place where you don't control your own ability to get around
Support network - Being single =/= being alone

I can definitely agree with this. Had my mom didn't have her own money, I didn't think both of us could survive when my dad left and didn't support us for several years.

I have my own money now and I can definitely feel greater freedom and power as I realized I can achieve whatever I want without having someone controlled me through financial situations.

Call me money obsessed but this is 1000000% why. I refuse to stay in shitty situations due to “not having the money to leave”. I always will have the money to leave. As a broke person (hopefully not forever tho!) this is hard bc you can’t rly splash out on anything fun with your hard earned money as it all goes into regularly used necessities like food bills etc and then this sinking fund but it’s better this way.

My Dad is awful. To everyone outside the family, including my brothers fiancé and even my partner at times, he comes across as a great guy. To us, he’s a manipulative abuser who recently screamed in my sisters face despite her in the middle of a bad vomiting bug. I hate him. My Mum can’t do anything though because he’s the main earner and she doesn’t believe she could afford the house or anything without him. It’s awful. And my sister is stuck at home with him destroying her every day. I hate it.

I really agree. People can say things like "all women care about is money" or call us "gold-diggers" but let's be real: EVERYONE needs money to survive in this world. Everyone is trying to hustle and get the money for a good life, to get their own space, to put food on the table, for their basic needs. Acting like you are holier-than-thou and that it's disgraceful or a bad trait to want money is so hypocritical.

If it weren't for my mother and her earning her own money to keep us all afloat, I would be dead by now because of my gambler dad. Her consistent earning even though it wasn't a big 5 figure salary, kept us all afloat just by her consistently holding down a job. She doesn't make much but she definitely made enough for us to survive, and I'll always be thankful to her.

Thanks for the reminder. I grew up in a country where there are barely laws for women in divorces so when my parents separated, my mom was kicked out and divorced papers were falsified ( yeah ladies I know she married a winner). So when my husband first mentioned to me the possibility of me staying at home… I brought up my concerns and he told me the following: We will build a real estate portfolio and income from that will be mine. I will have main access to all of our savings/ checking accounts meaning I won’t be asking for money. And my spousal IRA will be maxed out. We haven’t started it because we don’t have kids yet but we are building our portfolio and it is pretty good.

I have my own separate bank accounts from my husband and we have one joint account for household bills. I inherited a large sum of money, which I’ve also kept in a separate, individual account as my F.U. money. So if anything happens in my relationship I have more than enough to sustain me.

Yup! I’m very lucky that both my dad and my mum’s dad are very HVM and my dad was always adamant about me learning to stand up for myself and being able to provide for myself, and my mum was raised with the mentality of always being able to provide for herself if she needed also so they passed it onto me. My parents have stashed money for me I give them in case I ever need it in secret for emergencies. I’m currently in the process of reevaluating my marriage so this may come in handy, we’ll see.

Can I add, don’t tell men anything that would lead them to determine how much you make. It’s not their business if you’re not married. Always downplay your job, if you’re an engineer say you’re a tech, if you’re a lawyer say you’re a paralegal, if you’re a doctor say you’re a medical assistant, etc. If you don’t want to lie, then just say you work at a firm, or you work at a clinic, or you work at a university etc. When LVM figure out how much money you make they ask you to give them loans, invest in their businesses, pay off debts, or just flat out finance their lives.

I had an abusive narc ex who hounded me for weeks to give him $25,000 for day trading. Every argument ended with “…if you would only invest now it’ll pay off later” or some other variation. Like bro wtf?! Day trading is super volatile. Before that he asked to borrow $2,500 for materials to clean air conditioner units in hotels because “hVaC iS lUcRaTiVe” or some such nonsense.

It’s easier if they think you earn a modest income. With the last guy I dated I told him my internship was unpaid. 🤷🏻‍♀️ idc anymore.

Then unemployed/underemployed scrotes living with roommates have the audacity to wonder why I won't go on a date with them. I have also been told that I am intimidating to guys, to which my response is: GOOD😎
