Humans are one of the only other species that has sex for pleasure. Dolphins and I think walruses and a few others do. It's a sociosexual thing. It's how we bond and also a show of affection.

It has little do with reproduction. Because if you look at it. The human fertility cycle is actually pretty odd you get a few days in the month where you can likely conceive. But what about the other times where we feel horny? On days where we aren't fertile? Reproduction is just kind of a side effect of it.

I'm childfree.

Don't hate kids. I just don't want them.

Wanting to be child free is more likely to be a reaction to your environment than based on genes.

High cost of childcare, lack of options for mothers, and opportunity costs of leaving work as cost of living continued to climb make some people realize that children may not be in the cards for them. Or at least not comfortably

There's no evidence that someone whose parents wanted children is any more likely to want children. And there have always been people who didn't want children, it was just harder to do as it often meant abstaining from sex and relationships entirely.

You’re discounting other factors that play into the modern day decision to have kids - factors that didn’t exist for long prior to invention of birth control. As another commenter said, the (modern day) decision to have kids may more so be a product of your environment as opposed to some innate desire to continue your lineage.

Having more kids way back when was advantageous because it meant more resources to hunt, gather, sow crops etc etc. It was a form of / fed into your trade. Nowadays it costs much much more to have, and maintain, a family nevermind a large family with multiple children.

My guess is in the future, instead of just wanting sex, humans will evolve a desire to actually have kids.

How should that work, while not returning to a situation where women are pregnant all the time and way too many children are born? There is no motivating mechanism that makes you want just 2 children.

What's rather going to happen is that genes who like to use birthcontrol and live a DINK livestyle will die out and the people who keep getting 3-4 children right now will become a larger portion of the gene pool.

Is there even a neurological mechainism for wanting to make children? "Sex good" seems to be the motivating factor. Seems to be like "sex good make sex" for men and "good strong man make sex" for women.

There is the rational modern way of abstract thinking of making children. But is it something deep rooted or something from our "modern" times ? I mean modern in evolutionary terms speaking? I mean it in the sense of an abstract need like wanting a lamborghini. Nature didnt seems to have a direct mechainism execpt from getting horny.

It’s not enough to just have offspring. Those offspring need to be able to leverage the available resources.

If you have 10 kids and I have none, but I myself out compete your kids for resources it will never matter how many kids you have.

Even today plenty of people have a desire to actually have kids. Most people want kids at some point. But there's always going to be people who don't want kids for many reasons and you know what, more power to them. You shouldn't have kids if you don't want them.

But there's also the problem that a lot of people who want kids aren't having them because of their material conditions. You don't have the stability of your own home, your wages haven't kept up with inflation, childcare is absulrdly expensive, being able to provide all the things a child would need to develop well not just physically, but also mentally is often cost prohibitive. And this is if you have a healthy child, I'm sure I can't list all the financial issues that come with having a child with a moderate to serious disability.

People have sex because it releases dopamine children are just the unfortunate side effect.People that use Crstal Meth or heroin have said they preffer that to sex .

People have kids for lots of reasons but they have sex primarily because it feels good.having never done any drugs sex is the most pleasurable thing I have ever felt but if not for the awful side affects I would preffer to use hard to drugs for a quick pick me up rather than deal with women

Medical advances will only make birth control easier, fewer side effects, and convenient (Vasagel is only in its infancy, in the future people might be able to take a once-per-twenty years shot in the arm with a reversible antidote to have a 99.9% prevention rate).

Eventually artificial wombs will be a thing, you won't necessarily need a surrogate if your reproductive system cannot handle pregnancy or you don't want to go through it.

Most people want children. Many cannot afford it and so decide not to. In the future perhaps we will eradicate hunger and homelessness and have better opportunities for a higher quality of life for most people. This will mean all those who genuinely want children will be more ready to have and raise them.

More educated people tend to want or have fewer children, but this often means more aware of the choice and consequences of having children and making an informed choice, instead of just relying on the pressures and conveniences of society to turn one's head toward being a mother or a father even if they don't want to.
