Genuine question, considering anyone can identify as anyone. Will women who identify as men be conscripted? Or will they come under some protected minority class and will be exempt from conscription despite identifying legally as a man?

What is this garbage legislation even good for in this case? It means nothing!

It appears that governments might be getting a wee bit worried about their ability to wage war, having seen the reluctance of men in both Russia and the Ukraine to serve. Since they just cannot bring themselves to rectify a blatant inequality, they seek instead to stiffen the laws and penalties for men who might dare to think that there is no point protecting a country that would callously throw an indefinable group away even as they loudly trumpet egalitarianism.

I am from the EU but we do not have conscription in our country. We have a professional army and both men and women are accepted. Only a tiny fraction are women though.

I have German friends and they tell me that they can object to conscription in the army but they have to work for about a year as a service to their country. For example one of my German friends worked as an ambulance driver.

Please note that the German government consisting of Social Democrats (SPD), Greens (Bündnis 90 die Grünen) and Liberal party (FDP), had other things in mind about this law. But Germany is a federal republic and next to the Bundestag (where the coalition of Social Democrats, Greens and Liberal party have a majority) this law also needed approval of the Bundesrat (the 16 federal states) where the conservative party (the CDU, i.e. the party of Angela Merkel for the last 16 years) has a veto minority or something. So this law also has a footprint by the conservatives, even though they are not part of the government right now.

I don't know which party exactly now is responsible for this exception about conscription, but it sounds more like a concession to the conservative party than something that would be proposed by Social Democrats, Greens or Liberals.

This all sounds like something a conservative party in opposition would do to stay in the media and to please their voter base.

To add some context: By the bill counters they mean the far right AfD party. Not because it's a far right talking point, but to make it one. Have seen this a lot recently. The majority identifies as left, not because of their ideology, but because they don't want to be called nazis. This way most of them are on board with about anything, as long as it's the opposite of what the right wants.

It's great to see the government finally taking steps towards protecting trans rights. However, it's disheartening to see that they still haven't figured out a way to prevent men from being exploited during times of war.
