Cluster analyses rarely ever look this cleanly diametrically opposed where you see zero data points teetering toward overlaps and outliers unless there’s something else going on.

I don’t believe males and females are identical nor have the same “evolutionary” imperatives, but this chart feels off to me. Makes me want to read more about their methodology.

It honestly looks like they did an analysis expressly examining the differentiating aspects of males and females and then output an overfit data viz and said “Voilà! See, our male and female datapoints are exceptionally divergent in all areas because our model analyzed primarily the divergent areas 🙂‍↕️.”

But researchers at Stanford recently used artificial-intelligence methods to examine brain activity in roughly 1,500 young adults 20 to 35 years of age.

Neuroscientists have known for many years that every human brain is characterized by a “fingerprint” of brain activity at rest, unique to that individual.

The Stanford neuroscientists used big-data artificial intelligence techniques to determine the fingerprint of every one of those 1,500 young adults and then compared females with males. Did females differ from males? Was there overlap? The results were astonishing.

I think the AI/ML models for this flew too close to the overfitting sun.

The researchers found no overlap between male and female, and rejected the idea of a "continuum."

TLDR: I’m not convinced that population statistics would yield zero overlaps between some males and females across all “brain” areas.

As you can see, there wasn’t a continuum: the female fingerprints of brain activity were quite different from the male fingerprints of resting brain activity, with no overlap.

They found "no overlap" between the male and female clusters on their t-SNE plot, not "no overlap" between male and female fingerprints of brain activity. You can see with your own eyeballs:

Now is literally anybody (especially OP) able to actually explain anything about this picture? What is HCP? What are tSNE-1 and tSNE-2? What is an HCP cohort? What does this data say about functional differences between the brain activity of men and women? Is the gap between men and women depicted here actually notable or does it just look notable due to the scale used?

This was posted before, they have found differences in what causes/predicts certain brain functions not the brain functions themselves. Like how male and female urethras are different but we all still piss.
