This post is inspired by a recent exchange that I've had. I've noticed that some men like to dunk on women on this sub by asserting that we are a hive mind. We are conformist. We are not independent thinkers. We just blindly parrot and copy what society says is popular or trendy. We are attracted to whatever society says is attractive. We vote based on what and who people say we should vote for. Etc. etc. Women are presented as essentially robots who just operate according to how we are programmed.

Fair enough, to a certain extent. I will absolutely concede that as a group, Women tend to be more conformist than men. I will absolutely admit that women pay more attention to and care about what society says is acceptable than men.

That is juxtaposed by the presentation of independently-minded men who march to the beat of their own drum and put little concern into what society says. This is portrayed in a way to make women seem like dumb parrots, and men rugged individualists.

At the same time, any time the other side of that non-conformity is stated - like men over-indexing in deviancy, the very opposite of conformity - men rush to explain and equivocate how women are just as bad. Women sexually assault and rape as much as men do, or more. Women cheat as much as men do, or more. Women abuse as much as men do, or more. Essentially only the positive portrayals of non-conformity are acknowledged, and the negative ones insisted upon being just as bad in women - despite the decidedly non-conformist, asocial nature of such assertions.

This is a decidedly contradictory position to hold. Women can't simultaneously be a hivemind of conformity while being deviant at the same rates of non-conformist men. You can't pick and choose when our conformity to rules, norms, trends, and social mores apply.

Either women are just as deviant as men - and thus just as independently minded as men - or we aren't, and men's non-conformist nature should also be acknowledged and accepted even when it doesn't reflect well on men.
