This isn’t the “gender war” it’s simply an environmental observational study wherein the researchers are specifically stating they have no clue why the results are what they are. There is no real takeaway here but by and large tons of science is similarly not groundbreaking or has no real big takeaway. Often it simply leads to more questions.

There are plenty of studies that seem silly on their face but might lay the groundwork for something bigger and more groundbreaking.

I play the generalization game here because it's fun but irl you'll never hear me say "women want...." "men are...." because I think it's usually something stupid.

The urge to generalize brings people peace of mind, a sense of control. I see this a lot from red pill guys. They are very eager to put all women into 1 single box and make her predictable. It's a tool against the unpredictability of human behavior. This backfires tremendously because, well, people are way more complex than "all women want is tall Chad"

Regarding the birds lol who knows, maybe it's some product with a strong perfume birds don't like, maybe it's a way of body moving, hormones, who knows.

I remember reading some anecdotal "studies" where istriches prefer women over men. And that's likely because men move their body in a way that's threatening.

In bird culture, that is considered a dick move

Yeah, gender discourse is getting harsher and dumber, but it's not because society forgot how nuance works. Conflict drives engagement and people like to lean into it, whether for ideology, validation or just attention. Not sure how that bird article got caught in the crossfire but this post is overthought and under-argued.

It's a (very!) recent article, I'm sure someone knew their framing would raise some eyebrows, and possibly generate more clicks.

And everything is clicks. Everything is rage-bait. And it's so easy to make people mad. All you have to do is say, "feminism is about women's rights and misandry is not real," in some threads and the angry comments come automatically. If I were getting paid to troll Reddit, this would be a goldmine. They come, like Pavlov's dogs, to feed their master of rage. I'm probably giving Ozempic or some or like... idk... AI software two minutes of screen time, just saying this.

(TL;DR - rats in research captivity are stressed out by male researchers, but not female researchers. IIRC, it's a scent thing...)

The cues are interesting - it struck me as weird that in the SA article they're mostly talking about things like pheromones and gait. I'd have gone to trends in clothing first, since with birds the males tend to be more brightly colored and strongly patterned. In humans in western culture, it's largely the opposite.

...and then I hopped from the SA article, to the original study, which explains a lot more, and it looks like they controlled for clothing. Though also, if you look at the actual data, the difference is small. (I'm not arguing that it's not significant, just, well, not big.)

Its not gender war. Its research. And its important. If we can find out why there is a different reaction it could actually safe lifes.

Medically speaking women were treated like smaller defective men for the majority of history. We are still in the research of how a woman's health is influenced differently by different drugs.

Even if we might not know it now, a reaction that varies by gender could be important for the future if we can figure out why. Its not part of a genderwar unless its used to weaponise a gender.

I mean even this same study says that lab rats are more stressed when male researchers handle them. Most pet animals like dogs and cats also warm up to women faster. Men are 4x more likely to abuse animals than women.

Unlike these animals, wild birds are not animals that experience much direct human interaction, positive or negative, because they almost always fly away before you can get close to them. So it’s rather preposterous to imply that women are “doing” anything to birds when it’s not as if one can just walk up and grab a wild bird. Hard telling why they react this way, probably something hormonal, but it seems far less relevant than how animals experiencing direct human interaction react.

To clarify, however, I don’t think this study really is implying that women are doing anything to birds. It does seem rather absurd on the surface, but is interesting from the perspective of pheromones and how birds are able to sense these differences between genders.
