Because "masculine" interests (I notice that, in line with modern society, you define "masculine" pretty effectively as "retarded and useless" but I digress) are generally more fun. Whereas feminine interests are generally more boring. This is in line with the typical patterns, men are more interesting, funnier, and well... just more fun, in general, than women.

Also society tends to push the "this girl is awesome because she is just like one of the guys!" meme pretty hard. Most movies that feature a dichotomy between a girl with traditionally feminine interests and another girl with more masculine interests usually portrays the girl with the masculine interests in a much better light. The girl with feminine interests is typically portrayed as being a bitch, controlling, narcissistic, boring, vindictive, mean-spirited, etc. whereas the masculine girl is usually portrayed as being laid-back, funny, accepting, understanding, giving, quick-to-forgive, and (this is important) more sexual. Feminine girls are usually portrayed as either secretly extreme sluts (rarer) or as frigid prudes (more common). Masculine girls are usually portrayed as loyal but also high-libido. The modern man is just as socially brainwashed as the modern woman, and he takes his understanding of women from the media he consumes, often to his own detriment.

Femininity is not really valued in this society. This is because femininity, like authentic masculinity, is not driven toward corporatism and consumerism. However, since the authentically masculine and the faux-masculine are usually close to each other, it's much easier to subtly switch them out. Femininity is much more easily recognizable, so rather than try to create a faux-femininity, they just downplay femininity entirely and promote the faux-masculinity as the ideal for women to pursue.

Ultimately the goal is to break down the family because the family is the most powerful socializing force on Earth. The overlords of society do not want a truly socialized populace, they want radical individualism, because this allows the individual to be more easily controlled by the government, the corporations, the media... the proverbial "Man." A good way to destroy families is to promote "masculine" behaviors in women: career focus, promiscuity, consumerism, partying, drug use, pleasure-seeking, radical individualism, etc.

So the answer to your question is that it is a little bit of natural attraction toward the "fun"; and a lot of social conditioning.

from my perspective as a guy, women who enjoy more masculine, dangerous, outdoorsy hobbies are more interesting and are much lower maintenance. I'm an avid skiier and snowboarder, and the women who have the guts and drive to learn how to ski expert terrain tend to be more self reliant and vivacious. They are better at dealing with stress and danger. They tend to be more solution oriented and are better at solving problems. Women who have the guts to do dangerous shit with guys without complaint are just more baddass and easier to get along with in a relationship.

Also, these women are athletic, which is essential if you want to stay hot. This is a really important issue now that it seems easier and easier to become obese. Middle aged women i know who have been avid skiiers or rock climbers their whole lives are still hot and full of life!

And one more thing: women who enjoy masculine hobbies don't criticize men for our masculine hobbies. I've noticed that women who have strictly feminine interests can be extremely critical and naggy about stereotypical male hobbies. It's not fun when your girlfriend starts nagging you about your favorite videogames or sports teams and starts trying to keep you away from the things that make you happy. Women who enjoy masculine things don't do this annoying shit as often.

I think the reason is potentially because this means less work for men. If women are doers and put forth some effort, that’s extra effort that men won’t have to put in. It shows that they won’t be liabilities that just sit around and expect men to do everything for them. I personally find women with some muscle to be sexy af. Not only does she look great, but it means that she won’t need help carrying stuff or be physically incapable of doing things that I would then have to do.

This is a totally great question and something I've wondered about myself often! The best thing I can think of has to do with gender and the inherent inequality between the masculine gender and the feminine gender.

By our society's value system, the masculine gender (and the behaviors they exhibit) are of higher value then those of the feminine gender (this goes for men and women meaning both sexes respect more masculine people more). Think about it. Being stoic, being capable, being strong, brave, competent, independent, being able to control one's emotions etc. and universally considered valuable traits in someone. - things all traditionally associated with masculinity).

There are good reasons for valuing these traits above others. Women have the right to complain and cry when things get tough, men have no such luxury and are held to a higher standard. Much of philosophy values (Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics etc) consider someone virtuous if the 'rational' part of their mind holds dominion over the 'emotional' part of their mind. A person is best when rationality is the supreme guiding force in someone's life and behavior according to them.

Would you rather hang out with someone who cries all the time and uses others as an emotional crutch? Or with someone that acknowledges and addresses their problems in life? Both men and women would prefer the latter. Also men have been condition to be more sociable then women throughout history as women have really only entered the 'public sphere' and enjoyed public life (separate from the family) in the past 60 years following their integration into the labor market.

This is why 'gender equality' is an inherently flawed concept. By any convention value system, the gender's are fundamentally unequal. The masculine gender exhibits more admirable traits then the female one full stop. The masculine gender is also good for the individual who practices it, it encourage people to be the master of their own destiny, the challenge themselves and exercise their power over the world around them and find meaning in life through their pursuits (satisfying man's 'search for meaning' that is so crucial to life in the view of existentialists like Viktor Frankl). The most we can hope for in society is 'equality of the sexes' rather than 'gender equality'.

The masculine gender makes someone 'whole' the feminine gender leaves one....incomplete in an existentialist 'search for meaning and purpose in life' sense. Therefore, people of the feminine gender need a partner to 'complete' them, they are defined based on their relations to others, to help them pursue their goals in life that they have been discourage from pursuing unilaterally. Women are looking for someone to complete them, men are looking for a life partner - these are actually two different goals and two different pursuits when it comes to romance. Men and women are really doing/looking for two different things when it comes to romantic pursuits.

This is why the phrase 'opposites attract' is really much more true for women then it is for men and your observations have taken note of that - men like masculine women (as life partners) that are similar to them in interests, goals, behaviors etc. Women want somebody opposite because they are searching for something/traits that they very highly value but they themselves do not posses.
