I'm trying to gauge something I've been noticing among the men in my life.

Many have an ex or certain girl they met who became "the one who got away". These relationships are often dramatic and short lived, but the feelings and chemistry are intense on the guy's side and they never seem to get over it, even when they get into a relationship with another woman.

The girl breaks up with him before the fantasy phase of the relationship wears off and there's little closure. This girl is forever encapsulated in his mind as a fantasy of what could have been.

I've been on both ends of this. I was the "manic pixie dream girl" to a guy I went on one date with and he obviously never got over my rejection even years later according to our mutual friend.

I am a partner to a boyfriend who obviously still fantasies about a tumultuous relationship with an ex who cheated on him even if he doesn't realize his feelings himself. Mention of her strikes a nerve of intense emotion within him that he does not have for me. I can tell he holds me to a different and much stricter standard as a result of us getting past the honeymoon phase and seeing me as a flawed human being. Although, sometimes I'm not sure if he recognizes this in himself. When I hear him listening to a certain break up song and he gets that look in his eye, I just know he's thinking of her.

For whatever reason, a lot of guys have "that girl" and subsequent girlfriends and wives pick up on it right away even when these guys don't even realize thier own emotions, which is often the case. Women get the sense that he would fight tooth and nail for this girl given the chance, that he would drop everything to be with her if she reached out for help or attention even years later.

Men seemly move on and are able to maintain relationships after a break up much faster than women, but are often not able to properly process thier emotions before committing to the next woman. The next woman ends up becoming a cope for him a bit like how a woman seeks a "safe and secure" husband after getting broken up with by an alpha. While he is content to go through the motions with a woman he's lukewarm about because companionship and sex, he carries the torch in his heart for someone else for years if not the rest of his life.

Is this the male version of the "alpha widow" or do guys genuinely love and care for the women they get into relationships with after getting left by a girl they had very strong feelings for? Does this reminiscing over an ex happen because the ex actually was objectively "better"/hotter/ higher value than the current girlfriend/wife or is it just a cope for a relationship that never got closure?
