How likely is it that couples where the woman is more attractive, the man is compensating with his personality

I do see couples where the girl is more physically attractive, and people tend to use those examples to prove its about personality and not looks but how do we know what the woman Is thinking? What if he’s actually compensating with status or money , or his height of the woman actually finds him her type ? I don’t believe personality is often something you can use to compensate for lack of physical attractiveness
