Some people seem to be coping when they say it's because conservatives report mental illness less. I've read through a couple of studies on stigmatization and it's true that conservatives are more likely to stigmatize mental illness but a) the results were far too close to explain a 100% differnce in mental illness b) other conservatives stigmatizing it doesn't mean that you yourself don't report it. White liberal are most affected btw. Also moderates report almost as much as liberals so it makes no sense that liberals are twice as likely to suffer from mental illness.

Besides that I like to talk about happiness in women a lot and the data reflects what the data above suggests too. Women are increasingly unhappy despite being 'better off' for 4 decades now and traditional women are the happiest demographic. There is absolutely no information that suggests that liberals have better or equal mental health. There was one study that tried to do a different approach by measuring happiness by looking at tweets and their attitude (LOL) so scientists are coping too.

Likelihood of seeing a mental health professional in the first place has got to be doing some work here

Then add in likelihood of actually talking the mental health professional with candor about said issues

Maybe this whole, flavor of women, we'll call it, is way more likely to have issues in general.

Maybe the political discrepancy you're seeing has more to do with the conservative camp of women feeling like they have to support their brand, (conservative christian) and therefore want to come off/appear as sane and mentally trouble free as possible.

The other camp views these type issues as more of a "cutie mark," and way of being different but also fitting in with their herd. They don't make the connection that it possibly reflects negatively on their belief system, or people making a correlation.

Ime young conservative women also have mental health issues, they're disproportionately pushed toward religious channels like prayer or talking to a priest or other religious figures, none of which will get you a formal diagnosis.

I also know formerly religious/conservative girls who abandoned those ideas and became liberal precisely because they didn't like the conservative culture of hiding or praying these issues away. So there could could also be a "jumping ship" effect here.

Over 50% of Liberal, white woman have enjoyed a life that has more privilege and prestige than 99% of humans have ever even had the ability to enjoy, and their basically unlimited access to resources combined with a life of basically yes men has created a culture of intolerant “tolerant” liberals/marxist woman who’s entire identity revolves around creating oppression which doesn’t exist.

Don’t get me wrong, issues like sex trafficking and woman’s rights in the Middle East is something we should 100% be attending to. But the amount of difficulty a white, liberal woman experiences in her life is absolutely none compared to a POC woman/man, but the part that no one likes to talk about is the female privilege combining with the white privilege which turns some modern woman into literal grown up toddlers who cannot see their issues as anything but the results of mans mistakes. they are always the victims, and some other external party is always at fault. This is literally just the younger version of the “Karens” which are often made fun of simply because they’re not young and attractive anymore (meaning people won’t deal with their shit and act nice just to get their attention)

Because many white woman grew up in wealthy households and basically never got told no, any notion of difficulty in their life manifests as a mental illness because they genuinely have never had to struggle in life. Combine this with the modern feminist socialization of young girls and you have a recipe for extremely fragile, selfish people who think the world owes them a favor just because they have different genitals swinging between their legs.

Iirc whites in general are genetically predisposed to certain mental illnesses bc they just are.

But also, that specific demographic is most likely to have their issues checked out. They're wealthy, they actually care about mental health enough to get it checked unlike conservatives who are more likely gonna blow it off, and unlike men, girls having issues is seen as more of a problem and dealt with whereas for a man it's "ah he just needs to blow off some steam haha" whereas a woman is going to be seen as more improper for having certain issues.

They're just more likely to be diagnosed.

I’m kidding, but the results of the survey have to be skewed by young white liberal women being a demographic more likely to seek mental health services/ disclose having symptoms of mental illness, and to subsequently receive a diagnosis.

Pretty much anyone going to a therapist is going to end up getting diagnosed with something. I just think white liberal women are the most likely to make an appointment to one.

In my opinion, it kind of feels like "liberal types" are a lot more likely to see a therapist and get a diagnosis.

I'm on neither "side" but I a-lot of the time, I see liberals using their poor mental health within their arguments where-as I don't really see this subject being used in the argument coming from the other side.

Now, don't take this like I'm attempting to shun or denounce anyones mental health issues as I was in a psychiatric hospital not too long ago myself but things like self-diagnosing aren't helping the situation because there is definitely such thing as 'talking a doctor into a diagnosis'

To "set the scene" a little. You figure that you've been waking up later than usual lately, feeling unmotivated and bored most of the time but also very worry some and this "worry" is making you lose focus on every day life and leaves you feeling like you just can't be arsed with the world.

You take a "self diagnosing quiz" and realise you share the same symptoms of a Bipolar patient.

Go and see your doctor, tell them your symptoms then you slip in the fact that you took this "quiz" (doctor usually rolls eyes).. the doctor tells you that you may be experiencing some stress related anxiety.

Wait a while and go back and see your doctor because you're certain that you're Bipolar. Tell them that you're taking your meds, doing therapy ect, but things are still seeming bad so then they tell you that you may be depressed and prescribe you Anti-depressants.. you think that "finally I have my diagnosis" but, in reality, you realise you've been playing on those feelings of stress you had in hopes to achieve that original Bipolar diagnosis.

After a couple more months, go back to see the doctor for the third time but this time you tell them you're getting no better and actually feeling worse so then they up your dose and send you to a psychiatrist.. then before you know it you're labelled with all sorts of mental health issues.

After a couple months on your medication, you notice that you don't want to be on 4 different medications that make you zombie like and tired all of the time but you're in a hole now because you can't just tell the doctor that you "just magically feel better" so you're forced to carry on, not knowing that all these meds are doing more bad than good. By the end of it, you have months and months of medications you don't need but still keeping that "bipolar" label attached to you because it's supposed to fit your stereotype.

This isn't just some assumptions either, according to my psychiatrist, it happens way more than people like to admit. I never would've believed this happened if it hadn't came from a professional in the subject.

I firmly believe that mental health issues are health issues. It's normal for everyone to have them from time to time, due to circumstance, or genetic predisposition, or both. We tend to assume that mental health issues are always chronic, but they're not. They're often situational, and can go away with treatment and/or a change in circumstances. As we're more and more aware of this, there will be more and more diagnoses--this doesn't mean everyone is walking around feeling crazy all the time, any more than strep tests cause strep throat.

Liberal urbanite white women are much more likely to be more atomized, have weaker family bonds, more self hating, move more often, less LTR's and more casual sex, more likely to report being unhappy in general, more fragile social networks etc. That's just the nature of modern American urbanism in general, only a couple of those things are specifically tied to political leaning (particularly the view of self in a racial context).

Inevitably they have a million co....arguments about why this is, which I see is already filling up this thread ("We're more likely to seek therapy!", "We're more honest!" whatever).

I think the phrase "late stage capitalism" is nonsense. I also think that the fears that plague people now are much the same as fears that have plagued humanity since the dawn of civilization. The difference is now we have better communication to share them. Also the biggest reason that mental disorders are on the rise is that we have an understanding of nuance over mental disorders now that is pretty new in the grand scheme of things.

It wasn't that long ago that unless you were not functional you weren't considered disordered in any way.

American white women have so many "mental issues" because they're absolute narcissists — the most comically selfish and conceited demographic that has potentially EVER existed.

I once took a gender studies course and even during discussions of how indigenous American women were still being sterilized and sold into human trafficking operations at alarming levels, they still somehow managed to dominate the discussions by blabbering about themselves and their pet peeves.

They focus so much on themselves that their greater surroundings and not-fucked-in-the-head-narcissists are in no position to act as some form of counterbalance. In other words, reality itself doesn't ever quite get an opportunity to assert some form of influence on their psyches.

Focusing inwards on an already degenerative conscious in an already degenerative society only amplifies these neuroses.

Because our knowledge is still growing, I think it’s important to look at the overall flow rather than getting too specific. For instance, it’s interesting that the bottom of the curve generally centers on “conservative” rather than simply being a straight rise from “very conservative” (except for “whites” in a couple charts).

It’s unfortunate that it’s a binary spectrum, because I am curious to where libertarians rest on this. In the past, I’m sure it was “liberal”, but not now.

More likely, they choose “conservative” or “slightly conservative”, given the chance, especially as “paleoconservatives” are grouped with them, at least in US federal elections. They are accused of always siding with conservatives, because of the importance they put on capitalism, as the biggest divide between the left and right has always been in regards to capitalism and recent history affirms libertarians, especially neolibertarians, side often with conservatives on this point, but they still are unlikely to choose “very conservative”. I suspect many conservatives don’t realize that they are libertarians because of how often I’ve been asked what that is, even as they quote a popular libertarian. You can see as they have made huge strides in changing the Republican party, resulting in factions/caucuses. Neoconservatives—probably the “very”s as they vote conservatively in both federal and sate elections—complained that social issues were being demoted in importance. Even before examples in the 2000s with Paul, Reagan ran a similar platform, but performed closer to a neocon thanks to his handler, his VP, Bush Senior.

Unsurprisingly to me, “moderates” have a huge tendency of being center-left when those relativistic titles are pinned down with specific questions rather than a “feel-like” self-survey. Independents tend to be all over the map with a hatred towards parties, which consolidate and instigate the liberal-conservative binary to resemble the Democrat-Republican monopoly. Independents truly are their namesake, but only . Undecided Voters are similar to the independents, but tighter to the actual middle. These, generally-speaking, are actual moderates.

NOT saying libertarians are the reason for “conservative” to be low, since they are a minority. I just wonder where they would be, if isolated into one of these, but they might be more like independents. The only argument I’d absolutely make is that “moderate” is primarily “slightly liberal” and, at the very least, this would explain the curve being in conservative rather than “very conservative”. Sorry for the rambling.
