The picture is incomplete without the accompanying numbers for completed/"successful" suicides.

Things dont exist in a vaccum, people aren't highlighting this as an article that is a problem if it exists in isolation.... if that is what it was... however, it doesn't exist in vaccum, it exists in a context of gynocentrism, male disposability and WoMeNz MoSt AfFectted, which results in stats such as men and women in certain areas of UK have a 12 year gender life expectancy gap, but in those areas, women STILL receive more health spending than men

“These figures have been taken out of context. Many of the organisations cited in this list also support men’s issues. Welsh Women’s Aid, for example, receives funding from us to deliver the Live Fear Free helpline – a 24 hour help and advice service for both men and women.”

lol 'men can totally call womens aid an get help too!'

who the fuck does that spokesperson think they are fooling?

[–]rabel111 19 points20 points21 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A women's help service that doesn't hangup on men, but triages them as perpetrators, applies a different algorithm that investigates them for being a perpetrator, contributes to the 91% of men (40-59 years) who reach out for help when suicidial but are rebuffed, staffed by man hating feminists who drink male tears while sniggering and laughing at vulnerable men?

[–]SharqPhinFtw 29 points30 points31 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Do it and record the call. You'll get snickering sneering and an annoyed tone until you just go and off yourself cause as a guy you gotta solve it yourself!!

As a male who once called such a number and got hung up with the remark that 'prank-jokes' aren't tolerated after I told that idiot that I was raped...

[–]mhandanna 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If men phone the national abuse victim line, they get asked if they are perps - something women never do.

I watched an interview with a good researcher on domestic violence. She has produced great material, studies etc on male and female victims. She said, the thing that made her open her eys was when she volunteered at a domestic violence centre - she assessed a male victim, who was under the categoery of extremely vulnerable and victim of severe abuse - she went on to report to her superior, as she did with alll cases - this time round though as it was a male victim, the superior, said no, and find out if he is a perp etc.... she was shocked, this had never happened in hundreds of female cases she reported.

THis made her go down the rabbit hole and do proper research and realise its all bullshit.

[–]Nergaal 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Boys were far less likely to show suicidal tendencies during the same time period; the number of emergency department visits for suicide attempts rose by 3.7% for males.

[–]Metraxis 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's not what I'm asking for. ER vs ER is what the article is making its point around. My point is that the comparison is incomplete unless it's ER + Morgue vs ER + Morgue.

[–]Nergaal 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

i wasn't clear. i was trying to show what the article thought is sufficient to mention about males. sadly, the CDC pdf doesn't go into more detail and does not mention success rates

closest CDC data i could find is this 1.4 M/F ratio:

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6932a1.htm

[–]Null_zero 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

From the article

The CDC noted that the increase in suicide attempts did not equate to more deaths. The suicide rate among young persons aged 15-24 from the third quarter of 2019 and the third quarter of 2020 "saw no significant change."

[–]Alarming_Draw 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If I see ONE freakin' idiot comment comparing female cries for help with dead male suicide victims, I'll go postal.

Guess there'll be some as theres ALWAYS some femtroll lurkers sadly...

[–]OctaviaPinfold 29 points30 points31 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

The study likely underrepresents the real number of suspected suicideattempts because Americans were hesitant to go to hospitals during thepandemic, in fear of contracting COVID-19,

So, we can safely assume that more boys, who generally get the "just grow some balls", or "man up", or "just get over it" treatment, didn't end up in the ER and especially not with a psychologist unless it was really serious. A suicide attempt can be a million things, many don't even involve the actual will to die and the physical harm itself is not serious. Especially because the CDC wrote "suspected", not even that all of it was a confirmed suicide attempt.

Add to that that healthcare is expensive as fuck in the US, and statistics like these don't reflect much. Not to mention suicide attempt != suicide, the fact that successful ones are not counted changes the picture a lot. Although they did write overall that decreased.

The family composition is also important factor here, with the families' marital status, financial status, general societal position, also views, political and religious alike, but that's missing as well. Some does get mentioned by the CDC as potential factors, but no details. Maybe in the references, but I'm not diving that deep.

Finally, the CDC's list of the 9 limitations really show how little these numbers actually show or even mean.

It is funny :

For domestic abuse : Women die more, so we should focus on them.

For suicide : Women attempt more, so wz should focus on them.

[–]screamingolive 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

That’s a really good point, but don’t most MRAs think domestic abuse effects all genders equally?

I don’t mean to start anything, just curious.

[–]SamaelET 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes we believe that. I was just refering to the feminist narrative and how usually society dealed woth domestic abuse and suicide.

[–]name2electricbogalo -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're wrong if you believe that, women are more likely to be hospitalised from abuse then men, not saying men being abused is nothing, but one gender is clearly more affected than the other

[–]babno 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Non reciprocal domestic violence is more commonly woman on man. But women are more likely to be killed from domestic violence.

Regardless of numbers it can affect a man just as severely as it affects women and all cases should be treated equally regardless of gender of victim/perpetrator.

[–]GrinningPizza 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why do people say ‘all genders’ isn’t the correct term ‘both’?

Why do people say ‘all genders’ isn’t the correct term ‘both’?

[–]screamingolive 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Depending on if you are against the idea of there being more than 2 genders. I just personally don’t care what someone calls themselves because it doesn’t impact me

[–]GrinningPizza 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I am highly against it because it makes gender dysphoria look like a choice and quirky identity rather than a serious mental illness.

[–]obligatoryclevername 105 points106 points107 points 5 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

80% of suicides are men. Nobody cares. They do care about the 20% of female suicides a great deal though, don't they.

Yes, your culture doesn't care if you live or die because it hates your for being born wrong. You're expected to happily be conscripted and have your guts blown out. You're expects to happily die so that women (the important people) can live. When you hate your life so much that you decide to end it, nobody cares. If anyone says anything about it, they attack you for being "selfish". You wasted your death by not spending it protecting a woman (an important person).

[–]Speaker7 27 points28 points29 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Each sentence I sunk lower and lower. Everything you stated is the truth. What's the way out of this? You can't make people care about something. Short of WW3 annihilating everyone and everything forcing us to start over and making an environment that caters to male traits like strength, what can we realistically do. Women have a love/hate relationship with men. There's "good" men and "bad" men. That's it. You've either served their interests and are good, or you have not and you're bad.

[–]rabel111 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

People care about men. The feminist man haters who are currently funded to provide services for men and women are the problem, that and the culture of casual misandry that has become a virtue signal for the media, politics and service providers.

[–]ideology_checker 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes people care about men just the average person cares far less about a generic man than a generic women. There's numerous metrics that are undisputed that show this for example the women are wonderful effect or that studies show people are far more attenuative female babies cries over male baby cries.

[–]rabel111 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Depressing but true. Part of the traditional male gender role model still being brutally enforced on men by the community.

That's really concerning that the UN thinks that. I remember when I stopped giving my money to UNICEF, because they were so against boys and only focused on girls.

successful suicide.. that word just doesn't sound right

[–]frustr8tion 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So, how many boys killed themselves successfully compared to this year and last?

And how many girls?

"The spike of successful suicides" has been mentioned, but where is that coming from?

[–]ThisIsTheEnd6 140 points141 points142 points 5 years ago (71 children) | Copy Link

"Among the adolescent girls aged 12-17 years, the average weekly visits to the emergency department for suspected suicide attempts from February 2021 to March 2021 was 50.6% higher than the same period the year before, according to the CDC analysis. Boys were far less likely to show suicidal tendencies during the same time period; the number of emergency department visits for suicide attempts rose by 3.7% for males."

When hospitalizations go up by 50 percent for one gender and 4 percent for the other, it makes sense to discuss it as a gendered problem. Obviously gender is a factor here for those numbers to be so different. No one is saying suicide by teen boys is unimportant.

Gendered issues should be discussed and getting offended because someone is talking specifically about girls in an article is no different than feminists getting offended that someone is talking about male issues.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 75 points76 points77 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

People who actually commit suicide don't visit the ER.

[–]dtyler86 51 points52 points53 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Came here looking for this comment. While I do understand that that is a massive uptick in suicidal attempts for a girls, I do find the wording of “suspected” suicide a little bit like the obvious elephant in the room.

Men, sadly, are not often “suspected” of suicide. It’s blatantly obvious because their brains are on the ceiling. Not “Morgan, what are these scrapes on your wrists???”.

[–]Devidose 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You don't appear to understand stats. This comment, and the others you've made below, show that you're fixating on the larger % regardless of both the examples provided and explanations given that a higher % doesn't mean a greater sum total.

When hospitalizations go up by 50 percent for one gender and 4 percent for the other, it makes sense to discuss it as a gendered problem

No it doesn't, regardless of which parties are involved by they gender, age, race, or any other metric. Stats are misleading and should never be the leading reason for this kind of thought. The first thing that should be done when anything is reported this way it to check what the raw data is to eliminate whatever malicious or unintentional bias may be present to avoid misleading those reading the story.

A 50% increase can be as low as going from 2 to 3 people, [or 10 to 15 to use HPUnicorn's example]. A 4% increase can mean going from 100 to 104.

Do you see the problem with using just stats for measuring this yet?

The phrase "There are lies, damned lies, and statistics" exists for a reason because stats can and have been manipulated before to mislead raw data in various ways. Be that to downplay a small % or to up-play a large one when in reality the whole numbers considered can mean the greater effect lies with the smaller % value.

And this is before even getting into the other issues other users are bringing up about why the flaws in the data in the first place;

Reporting: Many medical bodies include any self-harm as attempts, so it's not even sincere in reporting.

Methodology: For actual attempts the differences between what methods are used between men and women are entire magnitudes of potential lethality. Men aren't getting a second attempt because the first one works.

[–][deleted] 66 points67 points68 points 5 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

I think your missing the point as to why OP is upset. Not that they are discussing women but because they aren't discussing mens.

This is just another example of women's issues getting coverage and I'm still waiting for ANY mainstream acknowledgment of ANY gendered issue men experience. But I can point to multiple sources that say men DONT.

[–]asdxdlolxd -4 points-3 points-2 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Comparing the 2 increases this is a more girl problem than guys problem tho, it makes sense to put the focus on the girls, on many others articles I would have complained but I have nothing aganist this one

[–]Input_output_error 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Comparing the 2 increases this is a more girl problem than guys problem tho, it makes sense to put the focus on the girls, on many others articles I would have complained but I have nothing aganist this one

Basic math would prove your wrong, 1 in 5 suicides is a woman. If this number grows by 50% that would make it 3 in 10. That leaves us with 4 more boys dying by suicide without even including their 3% raise.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Did you read my comment? Not sure how it relates.

[–]asdxdlolxd 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Point is that we should be mad at them when they ignore problems that clearly affect both sexes or affect boys more than girls but they only cover the girls just because "girls good boys bad".

A 50% increase in hospitalizations and an 80% increase in suicides are way worse than the increases boys had

Edit: forgot to say that the article discussed boys too, but put the focus on the side that had it worse as is logical

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Again, read my comment I addressed this.

[–]asdxdlolxd -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

We can't get upset at them because they are poiting out an actual problem that girls have (and specifically girls), we should be fighting to get represented more but it doesn't mean that they don't have to discuss problems that are way more women's problems than men's problems anymore.

Also I appreciated that they put the statistics for boys, the real problems are the articles that don't show them.

Maybe if I put it this way it's clearer, but I didn't think this was something I had to argue in this community, wanting to see articles that treat strictly men's problems and not wanting to see articles that treat strictly women's problems is not equality

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not upset at the article for talking about women's issues... again read my comment

Also the article explicitly talks about more funding for women... so... the fact that the increase in boys is explicitly excluded is something I should be ok with?

[+]ApprehensiveMail8 -11 points-10 points-9 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

"This is just another example of women's issues getting coverage and I'm still waiting for ANY mainstream acknowledgment of ANY gendered issue men experience."

You mean ANY gendered issue males experience. "Men" is the generic name for members of our species which technically can refer to a woman.

But this is part of the problem. Male humans are so unworthy of attention we don't even get a unique name for what we are.

[–]hidden_moose 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Oh fuck off with your pedantic semantics. You know, I know, and everyone else know exactly what the poster above you meant by "men."

Your argument can, and often is, turned around by feminists to show how we live in a patriarchy, the default is male, and other such nonsense. Don't play their piddly word games.

[–]ApprehensiveMail8 -3 points-2 points-1 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I knew what he meant this time, but I don't think it is semantics when it is the name of the freaking board and movement.

If we're going to call ourselves the "men's rights" movement we should damn well be aware of what that term actually means. We should know where the word came from- the Latin word for "hand", and we should know that the genderfree definition came first, and the masculine implication evolved slowly over time. Perhaps because "womb-man" was essentially an occupation, and all other types of "men" - workmen, militiamen, seamen, etc. - were typically male men.

And you are right - feminists do play games with this. They use the drift in historical meaning of the term to revise the appearance of history to be sexist against women even when it wasn't.

To modern readers, very formal, old documents like the Magna Carta, Declaration of Independence, Declaration of the rights of man, the King James Translation of the Bible, etc. sound sexist because they talk about men and men's rights. But at the time, it was widely understood that this meant "people" and they might not have even considered a gendered connotation.

Because "people" was the original meaning of the word.

I suggest we retain it.

[–]lasciate 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There's a better way to start a linguistics discussion than by derailing a thread where you yourself acknowledge there wasn't actually any ambiguity or misinterpretation.

[–]ApprehensiveMail8 -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Please, I'm contributing, not derailing.

I suppose I should stop and give you re-assurance that if your point is just to enforce the take-away message that females tend to receive more attention than males, I agree.

And if you have no further interest in discussion beyond that point. You are free to check out.

If you have some other point you'd like to discuss, go ahead and discuss it.

If you are interested in furthering the conversation pertaining to this particular study, there is a big difference between saying "I know what he meant this time" and saying there "wasn't actually any ambiguity and misinterpretation".

This post was about a CDC study in which data about "boys", "men", "girls", and "women" was presented.

Now if you just read the article and didn't click through to the study, you might not have realized that those are four separate groups. At least, the authors of the study classified them that way. "Boys" aged 12-17 did NOT count as "Men" and "Girls" aged 12-17 did not count as "Women".

The study did not include anyone over the age of 25, so the groups of "men" and "women" might exclude a lot of older people whom an ordinary reader might consider to be a "man" or a "woman".

If you are attempting to glean anything intelligent from the new data being presented, you have to pay close attention to how the words are defined and used.

There is plenty of room for ambiguity and misinterpretation if you do not.

suspected suicide attempts

There is an inherent BIAS in recognizing the female attempts and not equally recognizing the male attempts, plus, as others has said, men don't go to ER they go to the coroner.

[–]BaconCatBug[S] 140 points141 points142 points 5 years ago (46 children) | Copy Link

The reason suicide "attempts" are lower for males is because males don't do it for attention seeking, and use more effective methods.

[–]citerunner 28 points29 points30 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And you don't need a doctors referral to drop off a boy with a missing brain at the coroners office.

[–]OrphanSlaughter 80 points81 points82 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

When you see death as the only option, only escape, you don't take pills, you jump off a roof, you take a gun or cut your catorid artery and die, instead of seeking attention or help. Second point for low raise is already high number. If 2 victims a day become 3, this becomes 150%. If 500 victims a day become 501, number is mere 100,02%.

I once called the hotline, and got put on hold. I even got the standard message. If this is a medical emergency call 911. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call the number that I was holding for! The good ending to this. The Seattle VA operator talked with me for 45 minutes. I am not a statistic, I am still here.

When I was in high school, we were reading a memoir and a classmate said "the main character dies at the end." I was mad at him for spoiling the ending, but then I realized that since it was a memoir it was written by the main character, and so he couldn't have died at the end.

I don't understand. So you think the 50 percent in increased hospitalizations shouldn't be discussed because men are more likely to use more sure methods?

No one is saying the female problem is worse than the male problem. It's not a competition and the article said nothing of the sort.

The article is saying that there's been a large increase in female attempts and that is something that parents, friends, family members should all be aware of during these lockdowns.

Trying to twist that into 'no one cares about men because an article was written about women' is just looking tk make yourself a victim when you don't need to be.

An article about male homelessness isn't victimizing women. An article about female suicides isn't victimizing men.

[–]Infamous_Pay5798 44 points45 points46 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Your not wrong, but when the media at large doesn’t show this amount of concern for the males that are committing suicide, not attempting but actually doing it, it’s hard not to get upset about it, and yes it is a problem that girls are attempting more but to be fair as we all know boys tend to just do it and get it done. Also “ Boys were far less likely to show suicidal tendencies during the same time period” which is from the article above by the way is unfortunately not surprising considering boys are surrounded by messages bashing them for simply being male and seeing examples of how society doesn’t give two shits about you and your feelings and any problems you do have is because of your toxic masculinity crap. So yeah why would boys show anything knowing that society at this state doesn’t give a damn.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I always thought suicide rate among men were higher bc no one really listens to their issues.

[–]Infamous_Pay5798 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Your correct that is indeed the problem, an flawed education system that is female oriented that hates and bashes boys for being males all they say through college if they even go to college, young men being falsely accused of rape essentially ruining their lives and isolating them, men losing nearly everything during divorce cause it’s rigged against them, being forced to pay child support they might not be able to afford cause already take a lot of the assets and money through alimony as well as the occasional false accusation of abuse by the ex-wife to make sure she gets full custody of the children, men being abused physically and mentally, raped and hears time and time again how men are evil, and men should all die. Combine all of that and as you correctly pointed out seeing that no one cares about your health and well-being, seeing that you have almost no support systems to help, getting turned away because your male, seeing article after article talking about laws and organizations setup to help women but not you, more funding for women, but not you, study after study talking about how women are affected most by everything and that men are the cause somehow, to men all of this makes them feel like they have no other choice because no one cares. It’s fucked up, but at least the men’s rights community does care about men and I believe that this community does help men not commit suicide since it shows that people do care.

[–]Nevarinin512 65 points66 points67 points 5 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

In simple terms: the reason why suicide attempts are lower for male (ergo higher for females) is because males tend to be more successful with their attempt. Dead people don’t show under attempts, because it isn’t an attempt anymore. More men end up dead by suicide than women, women have statically higher numbers of attempts, but not deaths.

[–]BeastlyDecks 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Did the successful suicides also spike in boys under covid then? Or are you all just assuming this to be the case?

[–]Nevarinin512 -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

  1. I was clarifying a sub-point that was made.

  2. You are the second person who asks me this even though there is no indication of it. Why?

  3. I don’t speak for “all.” I don’t assume it spiked as much.

  4. Since the amount of men dying of suicide is 2x-4x higher than women, men are clearly more disadvantaged in this than women to begin with. Even a 50% change for women won’t change this.

  5. Showing only a change in % is statistically worthless (and borderline dishonest) if it isn’t brought together with the total. Why? Because a 50% increase could be like this:

Death by suicide previous year: Female: 100 Male: 400

This year:

Female: 150 (+50%) Male: 480 (+20%)

Those are just example numbers.

As one can see, the total increase by deaths for men would still be higher, the total number is significantly higher for men, even though it is correct that there is a 50% increase for women here. However, many people will read about a 50% increase and assume that now women die more often, which obviously isn’t true.

  1. I am not saying nor indicating that such an increase shouldn’t raise eyebrows. It is a rather large increase. This is obviously bad, even if it doesn’t change anything for men per se. Women who kill themselves are as dead as men who do it, there is no difference to me. But we should be careful allocating public help even further to women only when it’s clear that the issue of suicide affects men more. Public help is, in my honest opinion, more than unequal currently. Men deserve that public funding, they pay taxes like everyone else. That money should also be spend on men if they need help.

[–]BeastlyDecks -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You are trying very very hard to force this into a topic of conversation that just isn't related to the article.

I agree that a lot of people assume women are worse off in every single aspect of life and therefore overlook, or worse, ridicule, male suicide rates... but have that conversation under an article or comment that pertains to that!

Don't become the kind of person to re-center every conversation about suicide to how males suffer most. It's as obnoxious as a feminist re-centering every conversation about rape to how women suffer most.

No one here is disagreeing with you on the point that males suffer most from suicide. We just find it very annoying that you bring it up in this way.

[–]Nevarinin512 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Ehm?

I clearly commented on a comment about this, which itself was, let’s say tangent to the main topic, and I made that clear.

So how exactly am I trying very hard to force this into a topic of that just isn’t related while simultaneously telling people exactly what I commented about and even stating that it is only related in a tangential manner?

Seems like you are just letting it get to you that whataboutism is a big thing on reddit. I don’t necessarily disagree with you on that one either.

So honestly, I don’t need your rather condescending advice of “don’t become such a person” when I am clearly not doing that.

If you think a comment-tree on Reddit cannot become its own discussion, then maybe we disagree on that, but it doesn’t seem we disagree necessarily on the main topic. We both seem to agree that it is quite a worrisome increase and I even stated in my previous comments that it is and it is clearly quite bad even if that doesn’t have a direct influence on men. And we both seem to agree that statistics offered like that can be misrepresenting issues quite easily.

The only thing I said about that is that we should be careful how we allocate the available funds if those issues are not that easy to overview. If that means to you that I want to take funding away from women or something, then I don’t really know what to say to you. I don’t think that is what it means at all.

[+]ThisIsTheEnd6 -18 points-17 points-16 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Do we have actual number instead of percentages.

e.g.

10 girls came in last year, 15 came in this year, a 50% increase

100 boys came in last year, 103 came in this year , a 3% increase , so who has it worse.

[+]ThisIsTheEnd6 -17 points-16 points-15 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Why is it a competition to see who has it worse?

If 50 percent more girls are ending up in the hospital due to lockdowns, people need to be aware. That's a huge increase. Who has it worse doesn't matter. Helping people is what matters.

[–]BornAgainSpecial 25 points26 points27 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why is it a competition to see who has it worse?

Your comments are actively pushing in favour of one group because of a single comparison that can be misrepresented extremely easy due to how stats work. The post you've replied to with this comment event highlights how easy that can be done using a magnitude of difference as the starting point and yet you don't seem to grasp how that applies.

That's a huge increase

That's not how stats work. 50% can be a difference of 1 extra person which is why using just stats to report things is misleading. Re-read what HPUnicorn said. Look at the numbers they've provided. You could even change 10->15 to 2->3 and it would still be the 50% increase and yet you want to focus on that rather than what the raw data might be.

[–]locks_are_paranoid 10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The fact that it says "suspected" suicide attempts is a major red flag that the numbers aren't accurate. If a woman cuts herself, is that considered a "suspected" suicide attempt? What if a woman takes pills which she knows aren't strong enough to kill her? There are a ton of other ways that "suspected" suicide attempts aren't real suicide attempts.

[–]Devidose 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

is that considered a "suspected" suicide attempt

By some reporting methods it is, regardless of the intent behind the action, which is one reason why it's not accurate reporting.

My issue with this is that male issues don't get as much light shed on them....

Yes let's talk about the 150%increase But what about that 7 percent particularly if they arent showing the numbers those percentages represent

Is it fair to call 150% a big increase if the number was a 20 female persons increase compared to a 7 percent increase with that percent representing 100 male person increase (this could be sceen along the same lines that feminist pull with the pay gap comparing all jobs and all hours to determine a figur that helps them)

Because its shockingly easy to kill yourself, if women are so much smarter than men then the attempts vs successful suicides % would align closer to mens.

Also isnt self harm such as cutting yourself considered a suicide attempt? (not talking about slashing your vein here, i mean small cuts) Whereas men are more likely to punch a wall and not be classed as a suicide attempt, both examples of self harm

[–]DistrictAccurate 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Absolutely know what you mean. The phrasing is a bit unfortunate.

That being said, the suicide intent is different and serious suicide attempts are more frequent in men. Don't overestimate the strength of that difference though - there is a range of reasons for the differences in completed suicides.

Suicide intent data from 5212 participants was included in the analysis. A significant association between suicide intent and gender was found, where ‘Serious Suicide Attempts’ (SSA) were rated significantly more frequently in males than females (p < .001). There was a statistically significant gender difference in intent and age groups (p < .001) and between countries (p < .001). Furthermore, within the most utilised method, intentional drug overdose, ‘Serious Suicide Attempt’ (SSA) was rated significantly more often for males than females (p < .005).

https://bmcpsychiatry.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12888-017-1398-8

"Attention" is often seen as something sought to become popular or an alternative to severe suffering instead of an expression of it. However, that is not necessarily what it means in this context. Self-harm in women may serve as a signal of severe distress in order to get the help they need. You look for "attention" because people need to pay attention to see that you are not okay - to be taken serious. It might be less serious than men's attempts, which will see them die 3 to 4 times as often, yet the suffering is still very severe and in need of attention. It is not meant to invalidate women's experiences rather than explain that suicide is gendered beyond the methods used and death by suicide predominantly affects men.

The excess rate of DSH (deliberate self-harm) in females, plus the stronger association between DSH and suicide in males (Hawton & Fagg, 1988; Hawton et al, 1998), suggest that acts of DSH by females are more often based on non-suicidal motivation. In females, the appeal function of DSH, whereby DSH is used to communicate distress or to modify the behaviour and reactions of other people, seems more common. In males, DSH is more often associated with greater suicidal intent. It is interesting that in community samples, suicidal ideation is reported far more often by females than males (e.g. Paykel et al, 1974).

https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/the-british-journal-of-psychiatry/article/sex-and-suicide/7A8658C59F67A3B99B54A5CE97A3EFBF

As I said, the issue is complex.

In Western countries, young females are twice as likely as males to report suicidal ideation and suicide attempt behaviour. However, despite the fact that females make more suicide attempts, males are three- to fourfold more likely to die by suicide than females. This paper reviews the epidemiological evidence for gender differences in suicidal ideation, attempted suicide and completed suicide among young people and explores possible reasons for the observed differences. These reasons include differences in methods, intent, ascertainment, the cultural acceptability of suicide, psychopathology (including substance abuse, mood disorder, externalizing behaviours and propensity to violence), and psychosocial differences between males and females. While it is often suggested that gender differences in youth suicidal behaviour may be explained solely or predominantly by method choice, careful examination suggests that the issues are much more complex. In fact, females may enjoy more protection from suicide than males in a number of areas.

4x more likely

[–]rabel111 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Gendered in the way you are interpreting the data. You are wrong for so many reasons:

  1. Many of the counted suicide related vists to emergency departments by women/girls relate to single individuals making multiple visits. In some studies some individual women/girls made upto 50 visits during the study period. Multiple presentations for men/boys were rare.

  2. Highly gynocentric service providers/academics have demanded that self-harm events, including minor events like scratching or hair cutting, unrelated to suicide, be classified as suicide related. Given the larger numbers of women/girls presenting to services with self harm behaviours, this skews data toward larger counts of women/girls.

  3. Many men/boys seeking help for suicidal thoughts are rebuffed by services providers applying gendered algorithms to online health services, or offering help based on psychology services that view masculinity as a toxic doctrine, and alienate rather than treat men/boys. Clearly, service use is not a good measure of service need, when services demonstrate a culture of entrenched misandry.

  4. Whatever the rates of emergency presentations, you are just diverting attention from the wealth of research and epidemiological studies that show again and again, that 4 times as many men/boys are commiting suicide than women/girls. Why are you pretending that proportions matter more than absolute and relative mortality, that a 50.6% increase in self harm is more important than thousands of death men/boys.

So the real question here is, why do so many so called academics, professionals, service providers and HCW continue to ignore the extreme misandry in public policy and health services, and continue to focus on women/girls. Why, when thousands more men/boys need appropriate specialised services, misandrists are continuing to call for a gendered approach to service provision, focused on women/girls who already receive a massively larger proportion of specialised gendered services.

I know a lot of women who have been hospitalized for suicide attempts. They will take a couple pills and call 911, or cut themselves and call 911. This is the cry for help stage. Most men don't have a cry for help stage because we've been told no one cares about us for so long. Men commit nearly 80% of suicides, but no one discusses that as a men's issue, instead, all mental health wellness is discussed as in a feminine point of view, as in they discuss coping methods that help women, not men.

Not fully related to the Covid situation, but this suicide gap comes up all the time. Isn’t the discrepancy because girls usually use more unreliable methods?

That is even more concerning because there is nothing that can be done in these male attempts, whereas females can be stopped mid act and taken to hospital.

What the now your attacking minors?? They are kids they whine leave them be teenage boys always while about being horny and not having a gf on r/teenagers too

[–]Hamoodi1999 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Please don’t stereotype people who have attempted suicide as “whining and complaining”

[–]CrazedKnightCK 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Girl suicide is a tragedy. Boy suicide is a statistic.

(Not from me I know, and I don't endorse the politics from that dude)

[–]thatgirlanya 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Regardless of the gender here, because we all know men commit suicide at a higher rate than women, there is a SERIOUS issue in this country with adolescent suicide and it has little to do with gender in my opinion. Suicide doesn’t care about your sex, race, status, etc. We should be addressing the root cause here and trying to solve the problem, and not battling out who has it worse. 10 year olds, no matter what the gender, should not even be thinking about suicide. There’s a serious societal problem if they are, which there is.

[–]saahed69 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Than why doesnt this article mention that mens suicide attempts and actual successfull suicides rose? Why do they always only focus on 1 gender. Female. What is worse, a suicide attempts or an actual suicide? I think the latter but society thinks the upper.

[–]valintin 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Actual successful suicides did not rise. That could be one reason for not commenting on it.

[–]thatgirlanya -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You’re right about the article being shitty. It’s just shitty journalism. As someone else said, it doesn’t give you the full picture, which is high suicide rates in our youth regardless of gender. I don’t think we should be thinking of which is worse. Whether they are successful or not, they are so low that they are attempting to take their life. There are children killing themselves. That’s the problem here.

[–]BustedPhlush 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There are children killing themselves. That’s the problem here.

That isn't the only problem here. The problem OP points out is another bucket full of money being thrown at one gender while leaving the other standing out in the cold. Again. Again.

the full picture, which is high suicide rates in our youth regardless of gender.

When do we get our bit?

[–]saahed69 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

And its mostly men and thats why we have to focus more on mens problems instead of almost only on womens problems. Why dont i ever hear something on the news about the things men are dealing with and only things women are dealing with. Men bad women good.

[–]thatgirlanya 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Suicide becomes a gendered problem when they are adults. Children are killing themselves. That should be the main problem here.

[–]retropillow 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

bro literally the second paragraph mentions boys. The article is about the huge difference between last year and this year for girls, because it’s 50% more as opposed to 4%.

It does recognize boys, it’s just not what this specific article is about

[–]Darchenko 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah but it's highly misleading for example:

If there's 2 female attempts a year, a 50% increase would be a increase of 1 person. Whereas if there's 100 male suicides a year, a 4% increase would be 4 people.

Now what's worse, an increase of 1 person or 4? And why do you think the used percentages, and not actual figures to back the percentages up?

[–]Pearl4202 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No you’re just playing The Who has it worse game stop comparing tragedies this is what I hate about this sub

Instead of nitpicking these details spread more awareness about men’s mental health that would be a lot more helpful to teen boys i trad is whining about it like this..

Teen suicide among boys is a huge issue “what’s worse a man dying or a women dying” they are both bad I don’t care who dies more we need to solve the issue with teen suicide

[–]Darchenko 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is a big issue when federal funding goes to one sexes issues, all based of feminist propaganda which chooses to only reflect data that says nothing. Why show data, without the actual figures? Because it's not the picture the writer wants painted.

[+]sonofsuperman1983 -11 points-10 points-9 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So what if an article is published about female suicide. Get over it. There are plenty of article about male suicide. Try sharing them instead of moaning about this. It like when women’s studies student complain their isn’t enough women in STEM.

[–]Infamous_Pay5798 16 points17 points18 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well ops title says this “The spike of successful suicides by teen boys”, looking at the date of the article it is recent so, here is my question is there a recent article taking about the spike of successful suicides by teen boys? It’s fine to mention and be concerned about the rise in attempts by girls but their should be the same for boys too.

[–]screamingolive -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think it’s just important because the girls have had a spike whilst boys have historically been higher. That doesn’t make it okay- they should have mentioned more of the boys, and raised more awareness around that. It was a study done by the cdc, I don’t think they meant any harm by that imo.

[–]STYtoxic 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Is this what weak society and poor parenting looks like?

"The study theorized that the stresses of the COVID-19 pandemic may have been toxic to the mental health of young people."

Is this really the future we will live in? im just out of words, this just looks like a joke,

[–]name2electricbogalo 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't see what's wrong with people talking about teen girls suicide rates, should boys killing themselves get more attention? Yes but girl's suicide attempt is worth talking about, this is the exact same mindset radical feminists are using whenever someone talks about a man being raped

My husband has major depressive disorder and was taught to shove it down and not get help for so long. I have PTSD and bipolar 1 and I tried to get help but was neglected by my parents. Convincing him that he is suffering and needs help is like convincing my parents as a kid that I was in bad shape. It’s wrong for society to focus on only women, though I do hate some of these comments feeling women are lesser for not completing suicides. Truthfully I’ve never had access to a gun and when I developed self destructive tendencies my house got baby proofed of sharp things as a teen. I had an addiction to self harm of any form I could get my hands on. I’d cut or scratch my arms raw and choke myself before I started losing consciousness and felt too weak to continue, I’d starve myself and throw up all my food, I’d overdose on any medicine I could get my hands on. I liked and still like self destruction, I can’t quite explain it. All those times weren’t suicide attempts or anything, and self harm needs to not be demonized for women if people are going to accept that men struggle with it too. I hid it until I felt it was a genuine addiction that was taking control of my life. Contributing to the “it’s a cry for help” thing makes anyone, men or women, less likely to want to reach out to you about their addiction because of the stigma. I have attempted three times, one caught before I could do anything, second tried to cut the artery in my elbow crease but the knife was too dull to go far enough so I had to give up and third was a months worth of medication and a shit ton of alcohol that almost worked. Recently learned that I’m capable of cutting to fascia with the right tools (I thought it was just me chickening or something) so I’m planning on the best way to get at the neck carotid. It’s infuriating for us too who don’t have the materials. Almost died in December but husband called an ambulance on me and I knew they’d drag me kicking and screaming if not. Almost went into a coma. Posts like these make me upset for men but then the comments make me feel just as angry about some saying that it’s lesser. We just moved to a bad neighborhood so we’re getting a gun and you can bet that it will be my method if not an extreme overdose again with a butt ton of alcohol, hanging, or cutting my carotid. Ultimately it’s about what’s least harmful for others to see. Your internal organs being fucked up is less painful for others than seeing the blood splatter from a neck slice or gun shot, or the stillness of the dead body in the air. That’s what I take into consideration most is how to be least traumatic to others. Maybe that’s why a lot of us women are less successful. Now I hate it when teenagers use self harm as a means to negatively get attention but that doesn’t make their SH any less valid either. It’s the people faking and exaggerating and by proxy minimizing the struggles others have that is the issue. The people who we should be mad at are the fathers, grandfathers, mothers and grandmothers, who implemented the idea that men had to be hard and not feel emotion. The fact that I see an uproar about it is hopeful. Maybe these next generations will set things straight and help destigmatize men’s mental illness. My great grandfather committed suicide and my uncle died because of his alcoholism and depression around it. Had a few distant male cousins commit. Suicide and mental illness is heavy in my family and we don’t deny it. My parents just were dumb despite my mom having a bipolar brother and nephew. I understand not being recognized and getting shit on every time you asked for help until you learned to become a shell of a person. I couldn’t express emotions for years and I still struggle to not smile and laugh while talking about suicide plans or getting stitches because I want to assure others that it’s not a big deal. If they think I think it’s a big deal and they see me vulnerable then crush me, that’s worse than never expressing anything at all. It took four years of therapy for me to be able to communicate emotions. My brother was the opposite in the family and had the more typical stereotype “female mentally ill” issue of trying to get attention for a small issue and then minimizing everyone by proxy. My parents listened to him and coddled him. I was around plenty of dumb bitches in high school who did shit for attention but weren’t mentally ill. I know how infuriating it is. It’s been my life. Please extend some grace to your sisters who are suffering. Some of you are stigmatizing us as being attention seeking whores who don’t have real problems and who don’t try hard enough to die the same way people are stigmatizing your mental health as a male and not encouraging you to be open/disregarding your suicidal thoughts or attempts. It’s a cycle of hatred.

Thought this was a place for long discussion and contemplation OP but you’ve proven to be an ass about a very heartfelt and open comment thanks

Edit: lmao why delete it. Own it fam. Making a joke about a serious post that already said I struggle to be open and vulnerable for the same reason many men do, because we get shut down or laughed at and not taken seriously. I don’t know if you really meant it to mean my whole post was a joke or not or thought I was some SJW who wrote a lot and didn’t bother finish reading. Hoping it was just a pure joke meant to be lighthearted but truly in bad taste

[–]Legitimate-Ad-6267 -12 points-11 points-10 points 5 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link

Mentioning the issues of one gender isn't devaluing the issues of another. I'd assume that someone on this subreddit of all places would understand that.

Edit: An article from England and Wales, strictly male suicides. Just because it doesn't bring up women doesn't make it misogynist, and I'm sure everyone can agree.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/society/2020/sep/01/male-suicide-rate-england-wales-covid-19

In case you're wondering why I said "this subreddit of all places", its because the argument that bringing up mens rights doesn't devalue women's rights is not only true, but remains true conversely. Its hypocritical to say otherwise.

[–]saahed69 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So why are they excluding male suicide attempts rise, because it obviously also rose if females rose. Or is it maybe that men actually successfully killed themselves more? Not that anyone would give 2 shits.

[–]Cameronmm666 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

My god, this article again? Almost a third of this article goes towards addressing women’s suicide rates. Your an asshole that either misunderstands the article or are intentionally misrepresenting it to prove a point.

[–]Legitimate-Ad-6267 -4 points-3 points-2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You're right. A third of the article addresses the fact that women's suicides are far lower than mens suicides. Thanks for pointing that out.

If you want to set yourself apart from feminists, try not to flip shit at any disagreement. Trust me, it will go a long way. You're looking for misandry in the same way feminists look for misogyny. This is why most MRAs see feminists only as butthurt raging dictators looking for priviledge, and why most feminists see MRAs as disgusting misogynists who want to keep priviledge. I see plenty of great posts on this subreddit, but a loud minority (I hope they're a minority anyway) is just blatantly hypocritical. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Why is this even a gendered issue? Suidices rise for everyone over the pandemic. Framing it this way makes it devalue the other people that killed themselves.

[–]Legitimate-Ad-6267 -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Likely because male and female suicide statistics vary quite a lot. Like in England and Wales, male suicides are obviously higher than female suicides, but it looks disproportionate from the usual to me.

[+]dla26 -21 points-20 points-19 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's literally in the article, dumbass.

Boys were far less likely to show suicidal tendencies during the same time period

[–]ASexualSloth 13 points14 points15 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Do they explain how they gauged suicidal tendencies? Was it by attempts made, hospital trips after an attempt, number that call help lines?

Considering known issues regarding male suicide, none of the above are accurate indicators of 'suicidal tendencies' in men and boys. The metrics used to measure women cannot be used to measure men, as men are actively discouraged from seeking help in many countries and cultures.

[–]xsplizzle 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

why do you think that is?

Pretty obvious to most of us but im curious about your opinion

[+]Olliebkl -26 points-25 points-24 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

If anything, I’d say male suicide is talked about far more often so if we see a spike in female suicide rates, why not talk about it?

[–]EMPIREVSREBLES 14 points15 points16 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Is it? Honestly outside of of this subreddit is it talked about often? Because I tend to see more on suicide in general or for women.

[+]Olliebkl -8 points-7 points-6 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well from my personal experience with what I’ve seen, it’s men that are talked about more in relation to suicide

Doesn’t mean I’m right or wrong, just that we occupy different spaces

[–]AmnesicAnemic 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Could be selection or recency bias.

[–]Olliebkl 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That applies to everybody though

[–]Cameronmm666 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Respectfully, I believe you are wrong. From my 20+ years of life I have only recently learned of the vast disparity between male suicide rates and female suicide rates. I only learned of this because I took a social problems class at my local community college. There were 5 chapters in the book about gender differences in different problem areas. Male suicides were summarized as “men on average commit suicide more frequently then women”

A 450 page book on modern social problem. In this extensive book, only one sentence addressed what is in my opinion the largest blight on the male population.

If you think that men receive a lot of attention for this statistic, you are wrong. I would like to submit to you that there is not nearly enough awareness on this issue.

[–]Draco877 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Only time I have seen anything with a more male focus on suicide is on the veteran/military group and even then it is usually presented neutral. Not an actual male focus. Just the military/veteran group. And largely most of that attention is political grandstanding if I had to bet not because they actually care.

[–]notexistingbestthing -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why is suicide an issue? I mean that for both occasions.
