I'm watching news coverage in the lead up before Biden's speech. A male commentator just said,

"And think about all the girls around this country who are going to look at themselves differently tonight as they watch Kamala Harris up there as the Vice-President Elect."

Girls instinctively know they are worthy. It's as they grow up that this idea they don't belong up there is drilled into them. When they go from being "a princess"... to an expectation of being someone in the background as a man speaks. But girls/women haven't been keeping themselves out of positions of power and influence.

The audience who needs to see a woman behind the podium and thus start looking at the world differently? The boys. Because the false idea above is drilled into them, too, reinforced as they grow up only or mostly seeing males in leadership roles.

The commentator's intentions were good. Absolutely. But don't put the responsibility/blame yet again on us, as if we've been sitting around just waiting for a woman to be elected to a national position to think, "Huh, maybe that can be me." It ignores the fact that there have been capable women just as long as there have been capable men-- the mind shift change that needs to happen is in our male counterparts. That they need to innately know and believe as much as we already do-- especially from a young age-- that we deserve to be up there, too.
