Hey I’m studying computer science and let me say this shit is HARD. It is very difficult to write an algorithm like this. This isn’t some Fibonacci number generator. This is an algorithm to digitally construct an image of a black hole! 5 petabytes (5000 terabytes!) of data gathered from 8 telescopes worldwide over the course of a week went into this image. This chick had to have some background in astronomy, physics, and chemistry in addition to computer science to put together the algorithm to bring all that together to make this picture that we just scroll past.

I’m not saying there isn’t bias in the media because there totally is, but it’s not fair to this girl to discredit the work she did. We MGTOW, of all people, should know the value of hard work, and this girl has worked hard to get where she is.

And sure, it might not be fair to the other people who likely worked just as hard (and maybe harder) to give us this image, but she is the one who originally had the idea. The first person to have an idea gets the credit. That’s just how things work. With or without bias.

Please bare in mind the distinction between number of lines of code and worthwhile code. You can write just 1 function, or one method and install and run a external
JavaScript package, and that package alone can generate 2-5k lines of code, easy. And those lines do get versioned and counted.

This is not book writing, and even if it was, you can't compare a poet and a novelist just based on number of lines.

That being said, It does look like they picked her out as a "team ambassador" or project face. Why they did it is debatable. Maybe they wanted to avoid another "shirt debacle".

If I'm not mistaken 1M LOC is just a medium-sized, or even smallish, software system, depending on the language of course. For comparison, as of today firefox has about 40M LOC. I don't think the big achievement lays in the code itself, whoever has written it. But the infrastructure, data gathering, etc.

In any case we all know no one person developed the "algorithm", and yeah, I very much doubt this particular woman did it. She just fits the narrative and it's a great story for the media, as if they ever cared about "facts", lol. It's clear as day it's all bullshit.

I went to the Github link.

I see graphs associated with various usernames.

It appears the graphs plot "Commits" over "Time".

But what is a "Commit"? Is this one line of code? Does this mean that the higher the "orange" on the y-axis the more lines of code delivered?

And how can we tell how many lines of code each person delivered?

To be fair to her if she wrote the 50,000 line algorithm that handled the actual imaging process, which no one had ever developed before, that would be the most intensive and difficult part of the project. The rest could be 850,000 lines but, I could write a 9,000 page novel if I really wanted too. Length has nothing to do with it. Either way if you worked on a team, taking credit for the team's accomplishments is reprehensible in my mind.

I checked out the github repository and he is a data scientist/engineer and most of the "lines of code" he wrote are computer generated. I'm sure he is incredibly accomplished and talented, but the lines that he committed and the actual code that made this project happen aren't correlated.

You can check out his github here: it's very impressive, but if you understand github, you'll see that he is not responsible for 95% of the project. Lines of code in data science and the amount of actual code he wrote (which is actually very impressive from a quick glance) does not accurately describe the scope of the project.

They should praise the neural network who made that possible. The problem is that they treat as the next Einstein or something but that's more likely more mundane comp vision research.

That's probably some neural network who where trained to analyze radio waves input by the telescopes arrays. Probably trained by using already know data and patterns.

One could use radar signature of multiple planes from multiple arrays, gather petabite of data then training to recognize the shape of the plane and even track it while flying and letting you know of an incoming threat. You would essentially teach how to render the plane by the radio waves data alone ! Any airplane would be rendered no matter if it's an F15, F35, a 747, an A380, a Su35 or a J20...

That algorithm is apparently an offset of some Japanese team who've done research on that are a few years before.

That's a great achievement but was spoiled by the establishment feminist system. (Which is funny the more time pass and we force them, the less women enter the field they were more graduate STEM women 30 or 40 years ago than today and that trend is nowhere reversing !)

Indeed this whole narrative she did it all and she is the next Einstein and we need more women in STEM narrative is completely out of control.

Guess some MGTOW activist will dig in that whole story like that first female billionaire who create a miraculous blood test scam of a few years ago and find the truth, there is their github and all the commits. One thing though: the number of lines isn't really representative of the input but we should search more about the core code and any resemblance between her algo and the Japanese one. We need truth and light on this story, it's obvious that there again a political agenda especially against males in this whole debacle.

I will wait for some time (so that the dust settle down) and find the truth in the coming months or years.

It is a lot of data generated by the algorithm, they both did their part and I'm guessing that neither wants all of reddit to debate which one deserves the most credit. Work done isn't measured by the lines of code "written" to github, in this case for example it's mostly automatically generated data. Not saying he doesn't deserve recognition nor that he didn't contribute much, but you're just doing the same thing they did, she shouldn't be now known as the lady who created the first image of a black hole, because it's blatantly wrong, it's a team of people and she's not special in that team.
