fuck me...
My parents got divorced when I was in Kindergarten, my mom tried to pull some shit nothing like that though. My dad fought, and of course he lost every time, but he never stopped trying.
My 25th birthday was this year, and I moved across the country to spend it with my dad

I'd very quickly stop speaking to any mother like that.
[–]JohnMikerson 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I lived with her, and my dad moved around for work. I quickly wised up and realized what my dad did, and how my mother reacted to the whole thing. I couldn't really blame her. Now my mom and dad can have a conversation when needed, and my mom feels rather guilty. She is really bummed I moved, but its awesome.

I hope you can spend more time with your father. My dad died when I was a young boy. I'm in my thirties now, but I still miss my dad a lot. Spend as much time with your dad as you can. One day he might be gone.
[–]elebrin 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'll second that. I have spent many days wondering about my father, and what he would have thought of me as a man.

[–][deleted] 45 points46 points47 points 13 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
To an extent this story is me. Mom basically cheated on Dad than lied to everyone and said dad cheated, dad went along with it in fear of losing us kids altogether.
Mom still goes along with that story and doesn't know I know the truth.
[–][deleted] 59 points60 points61 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
No offense but your mom is a sociopath. Sullying a man's name when it was her own indiscretions that broke up the relationship, and then using the threat of kidnap to force your Dad to lie and take responsibility for HER actions???
And then maintaining that lie without a shred of guilt???
She's a sociopath at the very least, sorry to say.
[–]Muffinizer1 8 points9 points10 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It seems to be the mindset of a lot of cheaters, wrapped up in maintaining their own delusion so far they can justify it, or even believe what they say is true.
[–]koakoba 7 points8 points9 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
This is my SO's exact story. I told him I think his kids should know the truth. It's not fair their mom gets to drag his name through the dirt when she's the whore who couldn't keep her legs closed.
[–]dicaparly 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
My mom was like that. She cheated on my dad, then demanded a divorce because he was an alcoholic/physically abusive (he was, not just to her, but to me as well), but when he brought up her indiscretions to try and preserve his rights to see us, she turned it around and claimed he cheated on her. The court decided all fault was on him, and she was (essentially) a perfect example of a parent. He ended up getting addicted to all sorts of drugs after that, fell into depression, and died homeless (he died of cancer, not an OD, which was kind of surprising). Yes, he was an asshole, but she destroyed his life to protect herself. And she still holds her position that she was blameless in the whole affair... I know he was abusive, but she didn't have the guts to admit that she messed up too.

I am going through this right fucking now... I cannot see my kids, my exwife keeps them from me and barely "Allows" me to speak to them on the phone. I am deathly affraid something is going to happen to me, and my kids feel the same way, when in reality; I try and call EVERY NIGHT, and send them cards telling them I love and miss them.
[–]ReverendSalem 18 points19 points20 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I know this feel, bro.
My ex-wife was a longtime friend, I didn't really start getting close to her until her fiance walked out on her when she was pregnant. I ended up being there for the delivery, spent the next three years raising the kid. Near-singlehandedly, as it turned out, as she turned out to be the most manipulative and abusive person I've ever seen.
Diagnosed PTSD from the relationship, had some real self-destructive behaviour for a while after the divorce. Turns out I stood up to her once too often afterwards, and she stopped returning my calls. Haven't seen the kid in years. Still keep pictures of her around.
One thing I hold on to hope with: Ex's mother told me the kiddo was in class one day when she was about six or seven, and they were talking about family. She piped up with "Mommy and Daddy used to live together but then Mommy yelled at Daddy and Daddy went away."
I hope, for her sake, she sees what a monster her mother is and doesn't end up like her.
[–]prizzinguard 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Do you think the kid's biological father has tried to see his daughter?
[–]ReverendSalem 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
He didn't in the first 5 years of her life. I doubt he has since.
He was a pretty legitimate deadbeat. I can't blame him for leaving my ex, though, now that I've been through what she probably put him through.
[–]dicaparly 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The sad part is she probably justifies her actions because of him. My mom is like that, she complains about how all men are deadbeats and the whole "kids don't need dads, moms do everything anyway" to me, and I'm planning on having a child of my own in the next few years... I'm a guy, so you can imagine how this whole thing makes me feel; I am afraid of living around other people, or having my family get involved in anything because I know that I'll just be the go-to scapegoat for anything that happens to my family.
[–]TheNebula- 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]arkindal 13 points14 points15 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
My mother used to tell me she broke up with my dad because he's an alcoholic and he was constantly beating her. I never trusted her. Now I live with him and I'm an adult (Eh... 27 and unemployed, fuck my life) and I know he wouldn't hurt a fly unless seriously provoked or for self defense. The worst part about OP's post, if real, is that poor man died thinking his son didn't care about him because he never got a letter back and probably that cunt just told him his son didn't care. I know it's not only women can be so cruel so I won't address this toward any gender but... How the fuck could anyone be THAT cruel?
[–]LegOfLamb89 11 points12 points13 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I am so mad after reading that. I would have went full ham on my mother.
Jesus, I can understand ruining your ex husband's life (I said understand, not approve or encourage, it's still disgusting), but this cunt (if the story is real) ruined her sons life aswell. It's disgusting.
[+]Canadianelite 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Blocked calls dude. :/ Know a guy's number (cell or home) blacklist it, they're cut off. Can't even talk to their kids, it's scary how a parent will shame the other parent in front of the kid.
Something similar happened to my uncle's family last year. (Happy ending) Aunt was a nasty tool. Separated their son from my uncle. First, wanted to divorce for money, backed off when they had to sell house to split evenly. Uncle was kicked out for about 2 weeks. No contact at all. Aunt blocked off everything from Uncle. I was "hired" to babysit 7 year old cousin, while Aunt obviously played around with suitors. Lil Adam asked me where's his dad. <right in the feels> Use iPhone to FaceTime Uncle (Thank you Apple /r/HailCorporate) Uncle was able explain to his son that he will be back.
Fast forward 3 months. Uncle divorced. He hired a PI to track Aunt for several weeks. Family history shows mental disorder appearing as they reach mid-40's: Bi-Polar. PI found 5 of the "potential suitors" for Aunt. (Brought two to court to testify they had sex before divorce.) Judge declares Aunt to be unfit to be primary caretaker for Adam, grants 3 days per week though, and Uncle has to stay within the state, get forms signed from Aunt in order to exit state with son. That's okay though. Uncle packs up everything, and moves wide across state. Aunt super pissed, tries to get sympathy (hah, Nope) Uncle and Adam are doing good. Uncle switched to Apple phone from Motorola phone. Last I heard of Aunt is that she caught herpes.
EDIT: I'm related to my uncle through my dad. Stop PM'ing me if I have bi-polar syndrome
Wonderful ending to your story, thanks!
[–]anxdiety 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's not hard to keep a parent away from their child if you've got custody. I've had to resort to getting my daughter a cell phone just to ensure that I can have contact. Even still she'll only call me while out walking the dogs and give me an abrupt "Got to go, bye" when she gets home. Or if we are talking on the phone her guardian will tell her to do some menial task immediately and get the abrupt conversation end (usually via text). The only reason she hasn't had the phone taken away is because I gave her the phone under the guise of keeping up with her friends. If the guardian takes it away from her she becomes the evil one and she can't risk that at all since my daughter is old enough to choose. It's a fucked up battle of psychology that really sucks to partake in.

It's a greentext from /b/: almost definitely fake.
If it's not fake, that would mean that the OP is an adult now. Society was a lot more misogynistic back then, so weren't custody laws more in favor of men?

Regardless of whether or not this particular story is real, it highlights a very real problem of parental alienation. It's extremely easy to say your ex was a piece of shit and doesn't/never cared about the child when they aren't there to say their side of the story.

The father also had a responsibility to reach out after the child was older and tell him the truth.
Your expectations of others seem rather high. If you remember correctly, not even the father's death was enough to reach his child. The child, due in great part to the actions of the mother, was no longer capable of being reached.
