So we have a few possibilities:
Without knowing how many people applied for a job there and what their qualifications were, it's impossible to make a final judgement. But I know what I would place my money on...
BTW this was October 24 last year in case anyone was initially confused.
[–]paladin_ranger89 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Correct, but I always do find it ironic that these equal opportunity places tend to be made of females and minorities.
[–]Bukkake_Monster152 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
There was actually a kid who was denied a place at '"Equality" and Diversity' committee at his Uni (even though he was elected) because he was a white man and 'white males never experience discrimination.'
And I don't make conclusions here, that was the official reason.
EDIT: Finally found it!

Sheesh, so how did that right there not make him eligible? Maybe he could re-apply after that and explain his run in with discrimination from some un-named committee at a university. It would be hilarious if they ate it up.
[–]brain_candy0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
But, see... if they didn't discriminate against him he would then not be eligible for the job. By denying him for the job based on his race and gender they made him eligible!
If they gave him the job, he wouldn't be eligible for it.
By not giving him the job, he'd be able to get the job.
Make sense now?
EDIT: Sorry, i forgot the /s

Well, if you think about it for more than a second, the reason is pretty obvious: it's the affected individuals the ones that are going to be interested in fixing things, not the ones that are comfortable.

it's the affected individuals the ones that are going to be interested in fixing things, not the ones that are comfortable.
Because apparently the ones that have an advantage don't have any reason or empathy anyhow.
[–]polysyllabist71 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
But since their mandate is gender equality in the workplace, shouldn't they be acutely aware of their problem and thus vigorously campaigning for more male representation in their ranks? Or does it not count when men are under represented?
[–]rusty_chipmunk57 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Lol. It's no different than the fighting for more women to get into STEM fields but all is quiet on getting more men into Teaching and other female dominated fields. When men are the majority in a field, something is wrong and must be fixed, but when women are the majority there doesn't seem to be any issue.
[–]_pH_19 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Ex. Any time politicians mention that 60% of college grads are women, its promoted as "equality" and they encourage the funding of female-restricted scholarships.
[–]Shongu2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
If you focus on one of those, the other is likely to happen. It would happen faster if both were encouraged, but in order to get more females in STEM fields, women have to go from their traditionally dominant fields into it, opening up more jobs for men there.
So while it is kind of stupid that they focus on one and not both, it will accomplish the same thing in the end.
[–]adalonus2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
While one is definitely more prevalent, there is a push for male teachers, nurses, and other traditionally female dominated fields. It does exist.
[–]Jemaclus1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
There are actually a lot of movements to hire more men in public schools in America, particularly at the K-6 levels. The main reason you don't hear about it is because it's a pretty specific niche that actually needs more men, an area that men don't feel comfortable going into, and an area in which many people don't particularly want "creepy men" going into.
In other words, there's not a lot of national outrage over it.
On the other hand, a sizable majority of fields could use more balanced numbers of gender representation. Many fields, especially the fields that correlate with higher pay (STEM, management, etc), are so imbalanced that it's impossible for women to move up the ladder.
(As an added "equal opportunity" wrinkle to the more male teachers thing is the fact that men are so much more likely to move up into the upper echelons of education administration -- principals and assistant principals are overwhelmingly male.)
Anyway, you're not wrong, but I think it's an apples-to-oranges comparison.
[–]unmisunderestimated6 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Why is it impossible for women to move up in male dominated fields but but not for men to move up in female dominated fields?
I have no idea. I don't understand why it can't be equally easy for both. *shrug*
[–]kinyutaka1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Not sure where to put this, so I'll place it here.
I had a scary thought.
Women tend not to go into intensive fields, for whatever reason. This puts them disproportionately in jobs where they can take time off for pregnancy. Food service or other shift work has churn anyway and are used to hiring new workers, office jobs can hire temps, call centers can simply reschedule existing workers.
I'm not going to speculate why women seem to be drawn to these fields, but I wonder if the push for women into more intensive fields, with irreplaceable jobs, might cause a lowering of the birth rate in the higher intellect female population.
[–]Jemaclus3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Well, I think you're conflating intelligence with career choices. A woman who is an office assistant isn't necessarily less intelligent than a CEO, and vice versa.
That said, there is a correlation between education level and number of children (namely, the more educated you are, the fewer children you are likely to have), so you're not completely off the mark about the end result...
Actually, I am referring to the fact that a migration of intelligence from those jobs means the ones that are left are less so, and uninhibited.
[–]phukka1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I suggest a campaign to get more men in Human Resources majors in university.
[–]5th_Law_of_Robotics4 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Their goal isn't really equality. It's to get more women and minorities in. They've achieved their job when it's 100% minority women. Until then there's work to do.

I'm going to assume that Australia's equal oppourtunity is the same as Canada's. By law, if you are in the public sector, you have to, at all times, give more weight to female and ethnic minority candidates. In theory, they are supposed to simply give the job to a 'minority' if there are two candidates of equal/comparable qualification, but theory is is often not what happens in practice.
This is a big reason why men simply never go into the public sector or majors that lead to the public sector. You're not going to be able to bolster your credentials much out of University compared to every other sociology graduate out there, so as a white guy, you're pretty fucked for employment.
Hence men going into fields that are 'risky', because risky is better than a chance of a freshwater waterfall in Antarctica.
[–]DeTrueSnyder20 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
You missed number four.
It doesn't matter if it's majority men or majority women. Most people don't enjoy working on a staff that they are the minority.

[–]Mnemniopsis11 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
This is also kind of the reason why women are under represented in STEM fields. I worked last summer in a workplace with very few other men and had no problem with it, but I can see why others would.

[–]pinkturnstoblu2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Interesting... so iyo, should this lead to more single-gender workplaces, or some sort of mandate/goal for gender parity in the workplace?
[–]sillymod10 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I think the point is that "workplace equality" advocates use measures of 1:1 ratios (or close) to define acceptable "equality". But they clearly don't use such members on their own groups.
[–]KnowsAboutMath8 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
There were plenty of male applicants, but the female applicants were better qualified by a ratio of 8:1
This seems at least plausible, given the distinction between the college majors chosen by women vs. men.
[–]IUsedToLikeTurtles6 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Or it was a combination of lack of male applicants and the women who did apply were more qualified. Ignoring this scenario (which is way more likely as it doesn't take every variable to its extreme) would show a smaller problem. There may very well be a problem here (there almost certainly is), but don't use bad logic to try to make it more extreme than it is.
[–]OldSchoolNewRules5 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Women tend to gravitate toward social work more than men. So I'm going with 2.
[–]TheVog5 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
In my experience, this is the most likely possibility. I've worked for 2 employers with female-dominated workplaces (~90% and 85%) where most of the work was clerical in nature and involved C-level communications. Case in point most males employees were in IT, sales, and marketing.
[–]Crackerjacksurgeon1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

So, basically everything in a business that matters (besides accounting).

[–]Revoran1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Does your company operate in the "helping women and minorities get jobs" industry?
Actually, scratch the sarcasm. For real what industry are we talking here?
Mechanical work. But does it make a differance?
Well I would imagine you would get a lot more males applying for jobs there (whether that's due to biology or society).
I really hope your boss doesn't hire men over women, of course, that would be terrible. But as above we can't be sure without the right information.
what theory do you believe in the above picture?
[–]Revoran2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I think they've got a bias against males. Workplace gender equality in this context means getting more women into good jobs - that's what the agency (it's an Australian federal government agency) is about. They are the kind of people who stand by misleading "pay gap" statistics.
https://www.wgea.gov.au/news-and-media/national-gender-pay-gap-rises-182
I also think number two probably played a part.
and whats to say that firms or industry dominated by men are not discriminating?
You seem to be jumping to conclusions to support your worldview.
So why do women on average make less?
When they say that women make on average 18.5% less (so 81.5 cents on the dollar), they don't give you any context. Instead they are just repeating a misleading statistic making it seem like all women are being discriminated against in the workplace, when that's not the case. But it appeals to the feminist and female voters to pretend they are the big victims and men have it so much better, so who cares about analysing the data?
There are reasons why women are paid less on average.
Once you account for these I bet the pay gap would mostly disappear. And ignoring all these things actually does a disservice to women. For instance if more men are in higher positions than women (and thus earning more), why is that? Is it because there is a bias in society to see men as more appropriate for leadership? Is it because females are not encouraged to be leaders? Are there more men in engineering because they were given lego and tonka trucks while the girls were given dolls and play jewelry?
Lastly, This data takes only "full time" workers (although as I said above that can mean 38 hours per week or it could mean 55). What about people who work part-time or casual? 25% of Aussie workers are employed on a casual basis. What about people working many jobs? What about other income like welfare, stocks, child support, alimony?
where are all the cites for your facts?
It does not answer the question why Women do not rise to the same position as men.
Everything you wrote could be written about how one race deserves more than another. From this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8JsRx2lois
Edit: Actually what is wrong with women playing with dolls? You make it sound like a negative attribute. Is the only right type of leadership skill learned by playing with tools and rough sports?
[–]pinkturnstoblu0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
There was 8 times more female applicants, because men are less likely to buy into this bullshit.
Hah. If men are 'less likely to buy into' the idea of better paid, more prestigious jobs... men need more help than anyone could've possibly imagined!

We have the exactly same problem here in Finland in our ministry's gender equality department. Two years ago they didn't have any males on staff. After a public outcry they recruited two profeminist men. Now their department head reasons that they can't hire men because the qualification is a degree in gender studies (renamed women's studies) and then she adds that they don't need men to understand male problems. F* that makes me angry. They are the highest discriminatory office, hence you can't complain about their discrimination to anywhere.

[–]the-tominator2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yeah they are fairly balanced and logical - maybe because it's 'human rights' and not some one sided 'gender equality' crap. I think it was they who ruled that insurance companies can no longer discriminate prices on gender, which before had been viewed by feminist-leaning activists as just 'positive discrimination' that was best not mentioned, in case they have to pay more.
Would be great to build a case about Finland and take it there, but since they did hire two men, it will be a lot harder to demonstrate discrimination - which is probably why they hired two men in the first place.
[–]MrAwesomo922 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
But the biggest discrimination in Finland is the one year of slave labor (in some cases 6 or 9 months) in the form of military service or civil service that rids a man of one year of his working life. We men lose our highest paying year's salary due to this and one year of interest; effectively ridding us of 3-5% of our earning potential. And finland is supposedly one of the most equal countries in the world (I guess if the definition of equality is that women should have 3-5% more money from careers in their lifetimes than men and not have to fight in case of war, then they would be correct)

There was actually a CMV post about this. It boiled down to the argument that the censored word still conveys the meaning of the swear, albeit muted, and there for it isnt inherently different seeing as both the censored and uncensored versions carry the same meaning and intention.
[–]gmano5 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Sometimes you want the enhancement of a swear word, but you don't want the harshness or negative associations of cursing.
[–]BiDo_Boss1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
You'd think you'd be getting the best of both worlds, and I understand why he'd want that, but let's take a second to think about it, it's actually the worst of both worlds.
Saying f*ck doesn't really enhance what you're saying, it just kinda makes it more lame. If it's added to imply intensity or seriousness, censoring it negates that effect.
At the same time, if somebody find "fuck" to be harsh, he'll probably also find "f*ck" to be harsh as well. So, it's more or less the same negative associations.
[–]gmano2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–]silly_vasily45 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm not saying they don't work hard. I\m sure they do. But women aren't lining up to become construction workers or most other physical labor. I think it's story time: I work in the army, I was a recruiter for the past 3 years. Here is what I noticed, boot camp is hard both physically and mentally and often its more mental than physical. Women are often better at that than men. I am in the infantry and we do have lots of girls (Canada). But also I noticed and this is part of why guys are pissed, after the 2 first years most girls get comfy office jobs with a 8-4 schedual while most guys stay in the active platoons and work their bodies to the brink.
[–]Hoodwink18 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm convinced that the army will have trouble retaining recruits because of this dynamic. Women go into positions of ease and safety, while men go into positions that are more physically taxing and dangerous.
In any male group where there's risk and labor, it will generally be shared or appropriated fairly. Add women to that group and they'll take the safety and all the non-laborious positions making the burden fall onto the other men.
[–]silly_vasily19 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Don't forget we get the exact same pay. Personal story, I was sleeping with this recruit form a new unit I was attached to. she's not even fully qualified for her trade as is already working full time in the offices. I am fully qualified and have been for over 8 years and I demanded a similar position and nothing was offered. but here is the trade off, when it comes to bragging rights and decision making these girls are never considered in the heat of the moment. I had a buddy who was deployed in Afghanistan at the same time as his fiance. While he was getting shot at on a more than daily basis, she was on KAF (Kandahar air field) working 9-5h and enjoying cold iced Cappuccinos from Tim horton's. I saw her on FB almost everyday and her summer camp like pictures. To ad to the insult she even got a boob job done while on leave...

They used to, same as older people. Since last year it was changed, it's the same for everybody no matter what gender and age. But as in any military if you nearly pass well you're gonna have a bad time on basic training.
[–]jay2121270 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Something about that though is they signed up for different MOSIDs. When i did my 3s and 5s the courses were very equal for gender ratio, however most of the men were transferred from Combat MOSID while women were direct entry. my last course was 10m/10f, out of them 6m/3f transferred from a combat MOSID.

Just why has the Minister for Equal Opportunity never been a male?
[–][deleted]156 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Because "Minister for Equal Opportunity" is doublespeak for "Minister For Women's Opportunity".
Op is this pic simply an example of the results achieved by the equal opportunity board, or is IT the ACTUAL department of "equal" opportunity? Shocking either way.
[–]Cedru48 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
"Equal" and "Opportunity" are not words that can describe a white male today. White males are so privileged that it's no longer "acceptable" to allow them in leading positions. That's how the narrative goes.

[–]kinyutaka2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Even worse, all of the governing bodies that oversee whether workplaces are equal opportunity are headed by either women or rare pro-feminist men, so the "ruling class" is slowly turning into women, and not men.
It's the actual department. Look at the tweet on the right.

We only have evidence of Homosapiens (modern humans) defiantly existing for 100,000 years, though there is some evidence that they might have gone back as far as 200,000 years, but no more. Tools don't indicate modern human species.

For the people who believe most feminists are misguided, this is what they fight for. Inequality. They want superiority.
The newbies are misguided sure... but that all changes eventually.
[–]AloysiusC25 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Actually I really think most of them are genuinely unaware of how sexist they are. Male disposability is so deeply engrained so male suffering is invisible to them. They really don't see it and so they really believe nonsense like "women have it worse". Basically, they themselves are the most guilty of "privilege blindness".
[–]bigboss20147 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Feminism by definition is sexist. They want equality by representing and achieving for woman. In a 2 gender situation, that means they're not representing equality, but rather representing the activity of taking from one person who is male to give to another person just because they are female.
Feminism is about everything but equality, because it's about changing a 2 sided balance.
[–]Plavonica7 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Currently taking a required 'civics and ethics' class. It started off reasonable, but now that you can't drop the class its turned into an hour long feminist rant. The professor even says that she is a social justice educator. I figure that if I just sit down, shut up, and do the homework I can at least get a passing grade. Then I won't have to torture myself further by having to re-take it. I have no illusions about any man getting an A in that class. She gets this look every time a man speaks or tries to answer a question.

the pendulum will swing back eventually.
when men stop asking women out on dates because they might be accused of being creepy, or worse. the fear of having their lives ruined by a woman is already high.
when men stop doing the hard manual labor work that needs to be done because "equality" then we'll see how much the infrastructure suffers.
Imagine a world of feminism.
I hope women are willing to step up to the plate. because if not then we're headed for a very rough future.
[–]AloysiusC5 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm not so optimistic. Basically, it's like a market where men are buyers and women are the sellers. It's a seller's market so women have the upper hand. If it gets too bad for men, then men won't all just stop buying. Fewer men will buy, and then the sellers will have to adjust a little and more men will start buying again. And the balance will be restored but it will still heavily favor women. There will never be a mass strike by men all becoming MGTOWs. Even if half the heterosexual men in the world did that, the other half would just party harder.
[–]revofire2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The second problem is that this could be damaging to his self-righteousness. If he got a copy of the women's CVs he might find out they are all very well qualified and were very likely hired based on merit, which I am positive is the case.

This is the Australian public service,
Salary is typically lower than the private sector, but yes conditions are significantly better. Shorter working days, higher superannuation contributions, random paid days off work (next Monday is "family day").
These are typically very safe, indoors type jobs with great benefits, a year of paid maternity leave etc... Studies have shown women prefer these types of jobs even if the pay is lower.
The funny thing is, all of these women's jobs are going to contribute to the false "women make 77c of what a man makes" myth (which is still very prominent in Australia with all forms of journalism and politicians citing it and nobody calling them out) Because these women make less money than coal miners(mining is our biggest sector, a bloke in the mines makes $150k a year easy, these women are probably ASO3 so they make a out 45k)
Well, shove them down the mine then if they have an issue with that?
[–]Workchoices6 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
They dont want to work down the mines, they just want to complain and work mon-thur 32hr weeks with 6 weeks annual leave [ plus 10 sick days] in a nice safe, clean office and gossip with their friends on the lunchroom. Oh and get paid the same amount a coal miner does.
Good thing about capitalism: it doesn't matter how much they complain, the private sector pays you what you are worth.

I work at the IRS. Let me tell you, it is about 70-80% women who work there. 90% of managers are female. Promotions are all about who is friends with who and not based on merit or ability at all. They even have non-technical leads and managers, which means they have zero training or understanding (I am not joking or being hyperbolic at all when I say zero) of the job and responsibilities of the people they supervise. The main job of managers is to review and evaluate randomly selected cases, but if you are non-technical and cant do the job yourself, how do they do this? No one knows.
I had a friend who has been trying to get promoted for 2 years. Annually he get graded on a bucket system and the best score you can achieve is a 5. One year he received a 3.8 with 2 non-perfect reviews, procedural errors only not accuracy or disclosure (providing private info to unauthorized party). Disclosure gives you auto 1 point deduction if you make even one error in a year. His female co-worker had 1 disclosure, 2 accuracy errors and 2 procedural errors and received a 4.
The next year he aced his reviews. No errors, at all. You get reviews 4 times a month. 2 from your manager and 2 from the quality department that reviews everyone. His annual review from his manager was a 3.5 and we went to the union and got it changed to a 4. How do you get a worse annual evaluation when your reviews are better? His co-worker became his lead (asst manager) of his unit a few months later, she got a 4.8 that year and had 3 customer accuracy errors.
This is not an isolated incident either. Many men face the same problems with promotion. The male managers in our building are all over 50 (except for 3) and some have only been promoted to manager after 7 - 10 years in the same position. There are female managers who have 3 - 4 years experience. There are no male department managers (the manager of the managers). But the Service Center head (the highest ranking person in the building) is male.
Sexism against males happens everyday and you CAN NOT fight against it. If you do you are ostracized and destroy any possibility for advancement.
Could you imagine being 45 years old, doing a job you have done for 15 - 20 years and then having a younger less experienced (in time) manager promoted above you who is not even trained to do your job and it is their job to evaluate how well you do your job.

I've applied for many labor oriented jobs only to find out that they didn't even look at my application past my feminine first name. Needless to say, I'm perfectly capable of performing the jobs I apply to, because obviously, I know my capabilities better than anyone. There are all kinds of jobs that I know I won't get just because I'm a woman.
One example: I applied for a job at a big store in receiving, because I like being on my feet, the hours worked for me, I'm not patient enough to cut it in customer service, and it paid better than a cashier. So naturally they interviewed me for a cashier job. I needed the job, even if it didn't pay as well, so I took it. When I started working there I discovered that every single person working in receiving was a fucking dude.
Sorry for the anecdote that supports the empirically supported phenomenon where women lose to men in hiring. Now, what were you saying about misandrous conspiracy theories for which you haven't even formulated a coherent hypothesis, much less provided evidence?
[–]Douggem3 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I worked at Best Buy for a few years and we had a woman that worked in the warehouse. About a year later she was pregnant and refused to move anything, climb stairs, or bend over, making her absolutely useless as a warehouse employee. She wasn't even showing at this point. She had some kind of condition that could cause her to go into labor way prematurely if she had any physical stress.
So they put her next to the phone and she sat in a chair and answered the phone all day. We did get a lot of calls, but the people that normally answered the phone also manned the customer service desk. She eventually refused to walk except to come in and leave, so she just sat in that chair all day long making warehouse pay without really doing any work.
Then she took maternity leave, got some kind of extended leave for some reason, and was pregnant less than 4 months after coming back to work again, and went through the exact same thing.
I'm not saying it's right, but that kind of stuff is why women are discriminated against in the workplace, especially in the typical child bearing ages. Women get knocked up and have to leave work. Even if the business makes no concession for the woman and doesn't offer maternity leave, they have to hire a temp replacement while she's gone and let that temp go and re-hire her when she comes back. That's not just a hassle, it has overhead.
The same discrimination happens to military members in the Reserves and National Guard. You know they may get deployed and be gone for 18 months, while they're gone you have to hire a replacement and let that replacement go when they come back.
But none of that is relevant to this picture. The point of this picture is to show that men and women make difference career decisions, and even an agency that has the explicit purpose of gender equality in the workplace isn't going to have 50/50 men and women, and it's not because of discrimination. It's because men and women make different choices.
"I'm not saying it's right, but that kind of stuff is why women are discriminated against in the workplace"
NO It's not right! I know why women are discriminated against in the workplace, but I just don't give a fuck because there isn't a single good reason to discriminate. And there are lots of reasons. One reason is because assholes like you shit on people for requiring a lighter workload when their carrying a huge parasite in their body! Another reason is because people don't think that a healthy young woman can routinely life 30 pound boxes in receiving.
"It's because men and women make different choices."
Yeah, no shit. Men didn't apply for this job, as pictured, so women were hired. I don't understand what you're responding to.
What did any of your comment have to do with my comment. My comment was about a woman (me) who applied for a job and didn't get it because she's a woman. Your comment is about how pregnant woman use a 4 pound parasite as an excuse to be lazy, and then you go BOLD to emphasize that women/men don't get hired if women/men don't apply. But I did apply. And I still didn't get the job. Because I'm a woman.
The point of the picture was to say that the employer in that office was discriminating against men, and that is false.
[–]Douggem1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
No, the point of the picture is to point out feminist hypocrisy. Women dominate some fields because men just don't want the jobs, right? But men dominate some fields because of misogyny and discrimination, right? You can't have it both ways.
There is hiring discrimination, though. Don't you think that's wrong? And that we should do something about it?
But what does any of this have to do with feminists? There are no feminists or anyone else saying that people should be hired for jobs they don't apply for. That's insane. What exactly do you think feminists are fighting for? To place women in jobs they don't want to dominate all industries and take over the world? If you're not a conspiracy theorist, answer my question.
Don't you think that's wrong? And that we should do something about it?
Well, no. It's not. You don't own the job, the employer does. If they don't want to hire you because you're a woman, that's fine. Same if they don't want to hire me for a man, because I'm a small guy (I also applied for a warehouse job and was interviewed for a sales job, I assume because I'm small and they assumed I couldn't cut it in the warehouse), or a if they don't want to hire a black guy because he's black, whatever. It doesn't belong to you or anyone else but the employer, and you're not owed it. This isn't an MRA thing, this is a free market thing.
There are no feminists or anyone else saying that people should be hired for jobs they don't apply for.
Except for every feminist that decries a gender gap, whether it's the gender pay gap, or the gender STEM gap, any of those gaps. They're complaining that women don't have jobs they aren't applying for.

I work in a city with a high percentage of Government departments. The employment of woman in these divisions is more that 50/50. Public servants in Australia are also well paid.
I work in a male dominated industry and would like to employee more woman. This is due to us wanting to target consumers with the highest disposable income, demographers tell us they are woman in there early to mid 20's and retirees. Unfortunately we can not pay the wages high enough and/or give the employment entitlements to encourage woman to come to our industry.

The government should threaten to shut these departments down until they hire a minimum 40% men.
That will mean firing a lot of qualified women and not hiring any for some time. But it's not unfair discrimination because we instead call it equality. And all the women who lose out should accept it. They're privileged, they need to lose that privilege. Complaining is misandry.

I'm also chuckling that the workload is lighter in the public sector job than the private sector. Sounds like they need to save tax money and let some of those employees go.

Clearly the problem here is that the 3 men are actually outside maintenance staff... Someone took the photo wrong. Can we get some updated photos in a few days to fix this serious error?

It really depends on government agencies.
Where I live, the social services ministry is almost entirely women, while the finance ministries are predominantly male.
This agency would almost certainly be a part of their social services ministry.

I'm curious as to what department this is, and what the titles/roles of the people in the picture are. If it's an administrative/secretarial pool or social work or something of that nature, I would not be surprised if it's comprised mostly of women.
[–]tatertaught1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
We criticize feminists who say that the wage gap is because women choose to work less and choose lesser paying jobs. Why can't it be that fewer men chose to apply?

Those men probably know more about dieting than professional nutritionists after working in an office environment like that.
If you fucking geniuses see an office staffed with 90% women you're all "OMFG MISANDRY. The Global Feminist Conspiracy has overtaken the Australian Bureaucracy!"
And if you see an office staffed 90% by men you would say "Those men were simply hired on merit. It's not the men's fault that women can't compete at the same level."
You're all such fucking hypocrites.
No, seriously, I want a direct and pragmatic answer. What do you think caused this? Do you think the Australian Bureaucracy is under direct control of the imaginary GlObAl FEmInIsT cOnSpIrAcY? Are you sure that maybe these women didn't simply out-compete other professionals? ARE YOU SURE? Do you know that this isn't how affirmative action works, ie. affirmative action did not cause this. And do you fucking know that feminists don't give a fuck if an office staff isn't majority women. There are no feminists sitting around ranting about how the staff in her office is only 50% female. None. That doesn't happen, you dim morons.
...what? What made you infer all that nonsense? It's just fucking hilarious that the Workplace Gender Equality Agency has such a non-diverse workforce when they seemingly exist to push that diversity. I'm sure their defense will be that men just don't want those jobs, and they don't discriminate based on gender...but if they say that then they pretty much prove our point.
No answer? I'll save you the trouble then.
BOOM https://www.wgea.gov.au/about-wgea/diversity-wgea-0
What happened is that, surprise, men weren't applying for jobs in this office and they largely only had women applicants to choose from. Now WGEA is implementing actions to encourage more men to apply.
"Additionally, your ellipses sicken me."

That link provides such an important context to this thread, unfortunately it will likely go unnoticed by the majority in this sub.
I'm sure the OP will see that link in the comments. All he has to do is realize that he made a mistake and offer a clarification. But he won't do that because it would interfere with his feminist conspiracy theory agenda.
That's pretty much the point of this image and this entire thread. That's what we say when people bring up gender gaps in male-dominated fields, that men and women make different career choices, and it's the entire point that this image was made: even at the agency that is dedicated to gender equality, there's not going to be a 50/50 split of men/women in the workplaces because men and women choose different career paths.
No, the point of the image was to support a conspiracy theory about hiring discrimination against men. Most of the people in this thread understood that. Hence all of the "Feminists did this! Some are more equal than others!*" bullshit comments Now there are a few of you backpedaling now that the theory has been proven wrong.
*You fucking idiots. Learn how words work. It's not clever to say "more equal!!!" OK, it just sounds like you don't know what the word equal means.
"More equal" is a reference to George Orwell's Animal Farm. I'm seriously surprised that you haven't read it or at least heard of that line - how old are you?
Although if someone were to interpret that image as women executives hiring other women because of favoritism - you know, like you claim systematically happens when men do the hiring process - they wouldn't be too out of line according to your own dogma that you yourself have said in this thread. Just sayin'.
[–]5iveby5ive1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
...
What, then, is your direct and pragmatic answer? Who is in charge and why are they discriminating against men?
I doubt there's discrimination, just like at your grocery store job.
...In which Douggem proves that he cannot read.
1) When did I say that I worked at a grocery store? 2) Telling me what you don't think is the answer isn't the same as telling me what you think the answer is.
Okay, I doubt there's discrimination, just like whatever store you told me you worked at before.

I've heard from people that have been there that most of Australia is extremely sexist and racist. This isn't the worst thing ever, maybe Australia simply needs women fighting for women's rights there...
[–]Sainsbo-10 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm guessing that there's a large female:male applicant ratio.
This is the shit feminists usually complain about. It's not inequality. A business is going to hire whoever is more productive because that's how businesses become sucessful.
This sub has become just as bad as 2X
[–]Zoltrahn14 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
This is a government agency that is centered around equality, not a private business out to make a profit. I get what you are saying and would agree if it was a private business.
[–]Sainsbo1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
While I didn't realise that it was government controlled, I think the point I was trying to bring up still stands. Even if it's government owned, wouldn't it still be sensible to hire the best employees even if they aren't out to make profit, regardless the ratio?
[–]Zoltrahn1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It is sensible and reasonable that they would still try to hire the best candidates, but at the same time contradicting their stated purpose. This is just pointing out the hypocrisy. After going to the organization's webpage, it looks like there was a bill passed in Australia, starting this October, to implement some sort of system to make employment more balanced between the genders.
[–]masgrada11 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It's not a business. It's a government job.

[–]EnormousTurnip1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I read it, I just didn't realise it was a government agency. Regardless, the point still stands that any company would hire whoever is more productive, regardless of race or gender.
[–]slideforlife4 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
that's the whole point. this is not a business. this is a government agency. productivity is only necessary so long as the busy work justifies their function.

read you moron.
Hahaha you got downvoted for suggesting the completely harmless and reasonable (and factual) hypothesis that there were more female applicants! These dim fucking morons!
Do they really think that every job announcement gets an equal number of male and female responses? Like, did you know that the profession of midwifery is OVERWHELMINGLY practiced by women? Think of all those capable male midwives who can't find work! The poor things!! Hahaha
PS, To the dim morons, it literally doesn't matter if it's a business or a gov agency. They can't hire men if men don't apply.

[–]dirtyratchet-12 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
You're right. It makes no sense that an agency called the workplace gender equality agency would be mostly staffed by women. It's not as though workplace inequality disproportionately affects women or anything. Also it's nice of you to provide sources for your claims of lighter workload and higher pay.

It doesn't. Men are under pressure to earn and provide like women have never been. Any inequality you think you see, is a result of that pressure difference. Want more equality, take some of the pressure off of men.
