That isn't surprising at all. From the CDC:

A woman’s anatomy can place her at a unique risk for STD infection, compared to a man.

The lining of the vagina is thinner and more delicate than the skin on a penis, so it’s easier for bacteria and viruses to penetrate

The vagina is a good environment (moist) for bacteria to grow

Women are less likely to have symptoms of common STDs — such as chlamydia and gonorrhea — compared to men. If symptoms do occur, they can go away even though the infection may remain

Women are more likely to confuse symptoms of an STD for something else. Women often have normal discharge or think that burning/itching is related to a yeast infection. Men usually notice symptoms like discharge because it is unusual

Women may not see symptoms as easily as men. Genital ulcers (like from herpes or syphilis) can occur in the vagina and may not be easily visible, while men may be more likely to notice sores on their penis

So women have the worse outcome from an STD-standpoint. Men have both a smaller chance of catching an STD, and the symptoms are very visible as well.

Would be interesting to see the data on testing frequency by gender.

In my experience, women usually get tested annually at their gynecologist appointment, but also before during and after ending relationship/sexual partners.... I’m not a man so I can’t comment on how the average testing cycle for men

50% to 80% of people in the states have oral herpes. So I think the 1 in 5 is a pretty low estimate.

I live in Miami-Dade County and here it's practically half the population. Like you and I could probably have dormant herpes or something. It's more common than we think.

It's a sad thing but it also comes from the lack of restraint that we as a people have. I wonder if AIDS would have come earlier in the 20th century if we abolished the draft and started massive deregulation straight after WW2.

I feel like the the lack of understanding of how to do safe sex right is the biggest contributor to STIs. I insist on safe sex, even for oral and manual, unless were fluid bonded and I'm VERY picky about that.

Fot the guys, a condom hj is amazing when done right. Get a non-latex condom, throw some albolene on the inside, and it'll be one of the best hj you've ever received. For penetration, make sure you get proper fitting condoms and them throw just a few drops of lube in the tip, I like regular old astroglide. Too much lube and you'll not have enough friction and risk the condom coming off.

The article mentions the CDC as a source, but doesn't provide a link. I'm doubtful about the 1 in 5 number. All the statistics I've seen, even ones from the CDC look a lot lower. If also be curious what STDs in particular they think are widespread.

This link, from the CDC, shows the incidence of chlamydia (0.36% for men, 0.68% for women) and gonorrhea (0.2% for men, 0.14% for women). They're still below 1% even added together. https://www.cdc.gov/std/stats17/minorities.htm

Not sure about things like HPV, where most stains have no symptoms, but it's very common.

HPV is so common that nearly all sexually active men and women get the virus at some point in their lives. https://www.cdc.gov/std/hpv/stats.htm

I found a source from the CDC. They do say 1 in 5 Americans have an STI, and they list them. The most common is HPV (usually symptom-less and the body clears the virus within a few years). It accounts for 2/3rds of all STD cases. The second most common is HSV-2 (genital herpes).

It'd be more than that since most people with HPV or herpes don't know. Men are not tested for HPV.

Around the world, many men don't have bits of their genitals chopped off, so their penises are similar susceptibility to STIs. So this should not be used as a "women are nasty" shitpost. Even circumcised men are very vulnerable to STIs as they are highly contagious either way. Women have more burden with risk of cancer and pelvic inflammatory disease/infertility.

Men are terrible about getting tested.

Everyone that’s sexually active is going to carry a low viral load of herpes (undetectable, never breaks out.) Condoms do not protect from it.

All women unless vaccinated (dangerous, I know a girl who died from it) will get HPV which may or may not go away, lead to warts and/or cancer. Men carry it but only women get infected with it.
