Protective instinct

The older I get the more I see I have a protective instinct towards younger people. I doubt this instinct has much value though as I it is perhaps coming out of the horror of how crappy life can be and not wanting to see young people suffer.

I'm extremely protective of my boyfriend. Probably slightly moreso than my immediate family (although I am very protective of them as well). He's the most important person in my life right now, so his safety and wellbeing is one of my top priorities lol.

Since I'm a girl and there's really not much I can do in terms of physically protecting him that he can't already do himself, it mostly presents itself in me caring for his emotional and mental well-being. Making sure he feels safe with me and can use me as a sounding board for his thoughts and feelings. Always being there for him when he needs me and encouraging him to take care of himself. I also do get anxious for him when he goes out drinking or on late night runs. Just fearing for his safety in general, although I try not to stress him out with my anxieties too much.

As a woman, I feel protective towards the children in my family. Outside of my family as well. I recall once, at a park, a little boy fell from quite high up, and I rushed over to him as if he were my own child. When I handed him off to his father, is when I realized that I did not even have time to think before reacting. I also recall being protective towards my father, but he was disabled at that time, so not sure if that made a difference in "flight or fight" response or not. I can't really recall being "flight-or-fight" protective of my ex-husband, but when he was in an unsafe situation, I did immediately offer help, without even thinking it through.

Thats my rule for relationships, more than fun, laughs and sexy times, if i dont feel like i would fight for her nor motivated to keep her safe in all matters, economical included, even if she can do it herself, i wouldnt start a relationship with her if I dont find her precious and worthy of protection.

Depending on your morals you either think it’s good to look out for those who are weaker, it’s neutral, or it’s bad to.

I find that particularly selfish people don’t experience this “instinct” for anyone other than themselves, and struggle with other tasks such as Cognitive Empathy.

This is why men don’t want to befriend women, it’s like you are giving them sister/wife privileges when they are neither. It’s a natural instinct to want to be there for women who are there for you.

I feel protective to my loved ones, children I don’t know, and animals. Mine comes out in aggression style I guess. Like a guard dog. I’m also very nurturing and try to shield them from harsh realities if I can.

For my loved ones, it's children, women and then men. For strangers too. Regardless of equality, I feel a stronger protective instinct for children and women than for men.

But the fact is that I have learned to suppress the protective instinct for female strangers a bit after negative experiences.

My first instinct at any sign of danger to anyone is to yell for my husband. I'll continue to do whatever I can to help everyone, but he's always priority.

I can't decide if it's me being cowardly or protective honestly.

If the love of my life died protecting me, I wouldn't be able to live with myself. Just dying there would be more merciful, so why not protect him instead? But then he would have to live with that pain instead of me. So maybe I wouldn't really be helping anything after all.

Protecting something entails doing so at the risk of your own sake. Which would further indicate that what you are protecting is valuable and worth dying for.

I would certainly put my life on the line to protect the dignity and respect of my partner, IF she has done her best to protect it herself. If however, her actions indicate that she is not too bothered about protecting it herself, or she doesn’t care too much about what it represents, only a fool would sacrifice his own purposeful existence to protect her dignity.

I feel protective of family and some friends, the closer ones. I feel protective of my romantic partners. I feel some protectiveness for all children, and try to help if there's something happening, though I wouldn't risk my life for children I don't know. No kids of my own, but if/when I have them, I'm already sure of my biological programming, that I'd be protective of them and want the best for them.

It's an instinct. It's programing, and it makes sense. We wouldn't have made it this long as a species if we weren't made this way.

Its a good instinct to have, but it shouldn't become overwhelming.

For example my mother. Her protective instinct means she will sabotage me and my siblings careers, love life, ambitions because in her mind she's protecting us from the dangers of the unknown.

Shit is toxic as fuck.

So yeah, be protective, but don't be possessive.

I have a naturally protective instinct. And these are the people I'm willing to protect in their order of precedence:

Minor, elderly or disabled family members.
Able bodied adult family members.
Minor, elderly or disabled adult friends. Although I don't have minor friends. Maybe I should say the minor children of friends.
Minor, elderly or disabled strangers.
Able bodied adult friends.
Able bodied adult strangers.

I've always been protective of my family members including my husband now. I was probably the most protective of my little brother, since he was the only family member younger than me... and I felt like he looked up to me and depended on me.

I think I'm protective of my husband the same way most wives are. We want to make sure they're ok, happy, comfortable and living a good life. And want to bat away anything that would make them unhappy.

I'm a bit less protective of my husband than my parents and brother tough. Because my parents are older now and my brother still feels like a baby. My husband is a strong man in his prime, so I feel like he's just tougher.

My family is small, but I do feel a sense of responsibility to look out for people in close proximity to me. I'll stay near a woman's grocery cart if she left her purse in it just to make sure no one steals it. I'll keep an eye on children out in public if they've wandered away from their parents. I drive slow in residential areas in case anyone's cat or dog is on the road. When I walk with my boyfriend's grandfather I stay close in case I need to grab him if he trips. At work, we work with a bunch of machines that could be dangerous, so I am always making sure people's hands aren't in them when they're running, I'll share my spare PPE and when someone looks tired or stressed I'll tell them to go take a break while I take care of the situation. My dad is too nice, so I have to remind him often that's it's ok to say "no", people like to take and take. And in conversation, if someone says something rude about my boyfriend I correct them. We have an outdoor cat (she fiercely rejects coming inside) and sometimes you will see me throwing a flip flop at aggressive neighborhood cats that come into our yard.

I am very protective of my family. It’s a blessing and a curse. It is especially frustrating when I know a family member is putting his/herself into a risky situation, but I can do nothing about it because it’s his/her choice and I can’t come across as judgemental…

Edit: in my most memorable recurring nightmares as a toddler/young child, I had to save my parents and grandparents from an evil entity.
