When did the word "Cis" become mainstream?

When trans acceptance started to become mainstream. It’s Latin and it literally means the opposite of trans. And it’s socially polite to have a word to use that isn’t something alienating like “normal” or “regular” or even worse “real”. Just like the term “straight” started to be used as opposite of gay. It continues to boggle my mind that it bothers people.

Cis is a legit word, it's useful when you need it, it's annoying when it's used while not needed. People trying to make gender political correctness a thing, it's not going to be a thing.

Cis is just the opposite of trans. Literally, as far as prefix definitions go.

Because transgender people exist, there are circumstances when the word is useful to distinguish a "natal male" from a "transgender male". It's no different from calling people "white" or "Christian" - it's just a more specific description of a person's general existence.

It's not, in and of itself, an insult. But much like pointing out someone's race or religion, it can be "othering" to the group being singled out. I'm sure most trans people would claim they're still getting the shorter end of the stick, considering some people don't want them to be allowed to be transgender at all, and will harass them if they find out they aren't cis.

My organic chemistry professor a few semesters ago introduced cis-trans isomers by excitedly explaining to us that, over the course of her career, as the language (when used for gender identity) has become mainstream, she was able to spend less time explaining the distinction as people came to her class with the understanding that 'cis means same side, trans means changed/crossed over', which slightly but noticeably changed the way she approached stereochemistry as a topic over the past couple of decades.

It became mainstream in the same way "being straight" became a mainstream term when gay people began to be talked about in mainstream discourse. Cis is the opposite of trans. That's all. Think about it like saying someone is straight, except that you're saying their biological sex and assigned gender match.

You heard it all your life, but due to the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon you've never noticed it so far because you haven't been aware.

Remember trans-fats? There are trans- and cis-fats.

Or trans-atlantic and cis-atlantic, trans-isomers and cis-isomers, etc.

Trans translates to "on the other side" and cis to "on the same side".

Transgender people identify as a different gender as their sex. They are trans-gender, meaning "on the other side as their sex"-gender.

Cisgender people identify as the same gender as their sex. They are cis-gender, meaning "on the same side as sex"-gender.

And thanks to the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon you will now notice something like cis-fat or cis-atlantic sooner or later in your day-to-day life.

Couple years ago. People got this idea that the tiny minority of people in the world that are trans are really important, and it's disrespectful to call yourself "male" or "female" while they identify as a a "trans-woman" or "trans-man", when everybody knows that a working body with working sex traits has absolutely positively nothing to do with gender and we all should get to decide gender just by thinking it.

So in an effort to be super politically correct, a cohort of ultra-liberals decided that men and women shouldn't get to refer to themselves as men or women any more, because that makes it sound like they're normal while trans-men and trans-women aren't normal. So normal men and women should identify themselves as cis-men and cis-women to signal that they are not necessarily the norm, just one particular type of man or woman.

When you refer to yourself, or any normal man or woman as cis, it's how you virtue-signal to ultra-liberals that you're on the team.

It isn't mainstream outside of a very few locales...primarily university campuses and very, very leftists cities such as Seattle or San Francisco.

Saying this is the vast majority of locations....in flyover country and most cities only gets you labeled as a pretentious wannabe intellectual virtue signaling.

Honestly, I travel across 40 states in the US and the only place I have heard\seen this term is on CNN\TV, reddit and two university ads at UC-Berkeley and Colorado Boulder.

It's "popularity" stems from "cis" being the "other" of two arrangements of functional groups on either side of a double bond (the other arrangment is "trans") in chemistry.

At least, this is where the word "cis" comes from, and has been co-opted by people who do a lot of complaining to describe the opposite of "trans".
