Paper chasing is the safe alternative to entrepreneurial endeavors. Like finding a job through your own social network.
The third alternative would be to settle for mediocrity, the most common path for a human life. A losing game/chase (life) that you can't win but keep trying anyway.

I'm guessing it was the third definition.
