My french teacher once used that line on me, but in French, and when I said I was single, he had the exact same reaction. I wasn't too disturbed at first (I was 20) but when I asked a friend about it, he told me what it meant. I'm sorry but this is terrible game. When you first start learning game and pickup one of the first things you learn is that girls get asked, "So do you have a boyfriend?", all the time by average frustrated chump types. They know, they are socialized to think that when a guy asks that question, it means that he wants to fuck or have a relationship.

But wait, there's more. Women already know at the very least you're approaching her because you want sex. They all know this. They aren't stupid. And you as a man, should only be asking this question to make sure she's not setting you up to get shot.

You ask her this because you assume you're her type and you're qualifying her for the sake of your standards. This question doesn't really create sexual tension. Furthermore, I almost never ask a chick if she has a man, because if she actually does like him enough, her thinking of him too much will cause her to shut down and feel guilty.

Asking the boyfriend question should be a qualifying question. Sexual tension is based on eye contact, tonality, physicality, qualification, teasing, and the emotional highs and lows you give her. If you really wanted to add tension I'd say something more like, "I'm praying to God your single . . I don't want to be in bed licking ice cream off your back and then some crazy guy jumps in."

I disagree. By saying this "Do you have a boyfriend?" line, you lose that percentage of girls who had boyfriends but were going to sleep with you and then mention him after the fact (or not at all). By deliberately asking about the boyfriend, you completely screw yourself over because now the girl is going to say yes and then... goodbye. Why would you want to shoot yourself in the foot like that?

P.S.: Only nice guys ask a girl if she has a boyfriend. Don't do that. Why would you care about some random guy you don't know anything about when you know for sure you could treat her 10x better anyway?

There was a time when I genuinely didnt want a boyfriend. So, when they asked I would tell them "yes" in the most firm, unemotional way possible and then change the subject to least "sexual" I could think of that was still relevant. If I said "no", they would try to flirt or ask me annoyingly personal questions. So, I learned to never say no to that question whether it was true or not.

What does work? Asking about my hobbies and interests and just flat out asking me on a date if we have anything substantial in common.

Hi there, woman here. Just to add my two cents. I don’t like the ‘That’s surprising’ line. It implies that her appeal is validated by being in a relationship. What if she doesn’t want a boyfriend? What if she’s so damn attractive that she hasn’t met anyone up to her standards?

Also, if you only want sex then you just shot yourself in the foot by bringing up her potential boyfriend. She might never have mentioned him.

Important note is when your saying your surprised she doesn’t have a boyfriend tone matter a lot. Make sure your not saying it in an accusatory way, but as a compliment. Don’t try to interrogate why she doesn’t have a boyfriend in an accusatory tone either.

Very helpful trick, but I think it's not the most effective one in all cases. In my country, most guys typically respond with: No? Why pretty girl likes you haven't had a bf; or, you lying, no one wouldn't chase a pretty girl likes you, etc. These responses while not the same, but they convey a similar meaning to what you suggested.

My response, in this case, is: No? Why am I not surprise?. Play a little reverse psychology - opposite of what she would expect. Literally just experimented this yesterday while hitting on a super attractive girl, and bro, she fell for it. Doing the opposite of what people expect can make you stand out and appeal more confidently. Just don't try too hard.
